 'Were You There?', from my album 'Steal Away', is a solemn reflection -- in song -- of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. As you listen, notice how I musically paint, by way of ostinato during sections of this piece, Christ being nailed to the cross.  And notice, through various uses of the 'mystic chord' (two quartal trichords), how I tried to musically convey the significance and the mystery of the resurrection of Christ after being buried a the tomb for three days.  Baritone Will Liverman and pianist Paul Sanchez, with care and sensitivity, masterfully perform this spiritual: musically evoking the darkness of Christ's suffering on the cross and also reminding us of the suffering of the negro slaves.
