Boston mainstay Born has built a strong and faithful following in his stomping grounds and beyond with sharp lyrics and a style that perfectly complements his partner-in-rhyme, Gdot. On Born’s solo mixtape, ‘Born Flexin,’ however, the typically Boom bap-minded emcee strikes out on his own with a sound and approach that can appease young and old heads alike.

Right from the jump, Born sets the tone with the IGNORVNCE-produced “Don Julio,” a chest-thumping banger that pays homage to notorious Beantown brawler, “Don” Julio Peña. The track features a guest appearance by upstart, Geo Fendi, who stunts across a number of ‘Born Flexin’ standouts including lead single “Dreaming ‘Bout Money” and the melodic “Making My Way Up.”

As longtime Born fans would hope, there are also several notable features from Gdot. In addition to the fittingly titled “I Know The Game,” the two team up on the mixtape highlight “MayLay.” The Martianz’s instrumental bangs and rattles as much as the rest of the tape, but it’s also an atmospheric and moody complement to Born & Gdot’s street-minded raps. 

In addition to the aforementioned guests, ‘Born Flexin’ also features Kay R, Young Boss Holla, Emporatti, and Steel Staxx, along with instrumentals from Young Forever, MJ Nichols, Sunny The Rapper, SP Anonymous, Cam Got Hits, CMBEATS, and CMPLX Music. With Born at the helm, they join forces to forge an altogether tough and booming listen that demonstrates the Boston emcee’s versatility and ear for melody. 

And just in case you’re one of those questioning his more Trap-leaning turn on this mixtape, there are plenty of lyrical middle fingers on here for the doubters. However, this line in particular captures Born’s mentality on the fifteen track, free download: “Don’t like what I’m doing? Directed by the team at CEO Productions, the visuals perfectly complement the world-weary feeling of the track itself, which centers on the concept of doing whatever it takes to get by. For the video’s protagonists, that means potentially spoiling the good things you have just to continue living the life you’ve carved out for yourself.

It’s a fitting pairing for “Gettin By,” a heavy-hearted, lyrically engaging tune produced by Swiss duo Soulslicers. They actually produced the entirety of G-dot & Born’s 'Drippin Soul' EP, which marks their first release together in several years after the two emcees made splashes with their respective solo careers.

The Soulslicers are a swiss producer team composed of four beatmakers and one manager. They have always loved hip-hop and strive to keep real music (BoomBap, Soul Sound) relevant. Even in current cultural changes they remain dedicated to the true form of the genre.

A diverse factor the Soulslicers bring to the table is individual crew members offering varying stand out characteristics/skills. Originally some members played instruments (drums, piano) and others used to be MCs, but over the last several years they have all shifted their focus to beat production.

At the beginning of 2010 they decided that being stronger as a cohesive unit would be much more beneficial than participating as separate lone artists respectively. The Soulslicers label was born and now the goal is making the highest level of beats for renowned international MC’s.
