Three Changes is about realizing and accepting changes in life. A relationship ended, I left a job, and I got another one. Like always, these changes all seemed to happen at once. I wondered if my life would ever see days of less change, and how I would feel about that. 

This is primarily a granular synthesis piece. The source material comes from an awesome exhibit at the Exploratorium on Pier 15 in San Francisco: a piano soundboard was setup vertically and a strobe light shone on these vertical strings to clearly see standing waves. The rhythmic clicks in this piece come from that light as it turns on and oﬀ. The strummed piano wires thunder in the bass register. The piano samples come from my own performance of original music that's totally derivative of Philip Glass, and Webern's Variations for Piano, Op. 27.

This was performed at CCRMA Transitions on October 10, 2013, featuring a 20.6 immersive speaker array spatialized with Ambisonics. It was written for 8 channels. An early version of this piece is also on Vimeo, here: https://vimeo.com/68817812.

Rainy Day

Here is "Thinking of You" by Pets Gone Wild, Danna Massie, Rick Kleffel and myself, jamming live at  the Woodstockhausen Festival in the Santa Cruz Mountains on a beautiful starry evening under the redwoods.

Thinking of you live

I rolled 11 & 60, which gave me 6 pitches, and 4 durations totaling a 4/4 measure. This repeats rather quickly in only three measures. So the material was rather limited to work with.

So worked by elimination - pulling out notes from the line and distributing them around three instruments: Hocket, sometimes clear sometimes abstract.

It was pretty much done when the connection to games (D&D, dice) struck me, and had the inspiration to add the kids. Balarrrga!!!!

This is a recording of my live set from CCRMA Modulations 2013.  It features three new tracks, which I hope to release soon.  Performed with Ableton Live 8, Livid Code & Novation Launchpad with custom control scripts, Nord G2, Elektron MonoMachine, and Elektron MachineDrum.
