For ASC006, we have 4 deep tracks from 1/2 of Ascension, Jim Brown, treading the lines between house and techno.

‘(g)round 7’ is brought together with rolling basslines weaved under steppy drumwork and percussion. Subtle atmospherics also sit in the back of the track, bringing an unsettling feeling – a feeling that isn’t resolved, and doesn’t leave you until the track is done.

As a crucial figure in the history of the thriving Irish dance scene, and a favorite of the When We Dip team since their early formation in Dublin, Ian O’Donovan is an artist innately connected to the XYZ label. Through an illustrious career, he’s presented his unique blend of uplifting productions on behemoths such as Bedrock and Suara.

For an artist like O’Donovan, long form collections such as the recent Still Waters album provides a refreshed insight into the Irishman’s studio character in 2020. Still Waters masterfully touches upon deep & melodic tones, while also propelling us into techno-oriented fields throughout the project.

Continuing the LP’s journey, we proudly present four remixes from across the electronic landscape. Given the diverse nature of the original material, it’s only right that the remixes are equally as eclectic.

Rounding out the remixes we have Petit Beurre revisiting Stratus. The Austrian duo have an old school feel to their sound, as their groove-laden techno is brimming with Detroit influence. The Stratus rework harnesses swirling synths on top of an analog bass and a classic kick. It’s a sumptuous finale to a collection of remixes that O’Donovan and XYZ feel is the perfect accompaniment to the Still Waters project; an homage to electronic music’s diverse nature.

Hotly tipped newcomer Yulia Niko joins the Watergate collective, delivering an exciting label debut to mark the occasion.

The Russian-born, Berlin-based artist has piqued the ears of heads with quality releases on Crosstown Rebels, Get Physical and her own TochnoTechno imprint. She steps up for Watergate Records with an inspiring maiden EP, augmented by remixes from YokoO and Francesco Mami.

‘Manifesto’ is the intriguing opener, as intergalactic synths rub shoulders with a chugging groove for an ultra-cool finish. ‘Passion’ is heavy on vibes, pairing an enchanting vocal with a colourful bed of percussion. YokoO contributes a subterranean ‘Defragmentation’ remix of ‘Manifesto’ on the minimal tip, before adding some warmth to the palette teaming up with Francesco Mami for a ‘Vegas Mix’ primed for the afterhours with its deep grooves and shuffling beats. ‘Hurts So Slow’ reinforces Niko’s versatility, imbuing a dusty house vibe primed for late night sessions.

'Todd Terry protégé Ant LaRock has provided some gems for Exploited Ghetto previously in the form of ‘Grown Ups’ and ‘When’, and this latest effort are by far his strongest productions to date.
‘For You’ is a spacious, heads-down, pacey deep house / tech romp with soft acid tones, pulsing stabs, shuffling beats and a whistling arpeggio which pulls you into the delicious depths of Ant’s artistry. It’s the type of track that makes you pull that satisfying stink face, it’s so darm good.
This is one of two tracks on Ant’s latest release, the other track named ‘Alkebulan’, which centres around a rousing Afro chant, and splices deeper house and techno flavours in equal measure. Roland Clark’s vocal gives a dramatic edge, spinning a narrative yarn over the peppy percussion and subby bass tones. Blasts of low-slung synth drama swoop in and out dramatically before they switch to an uplifting chord progression.'
