'Lapsus Music welcome US house icon Paul Johnson as he delivers his latest single ‘You Drive Me Crazy’, accompanied by a remix from label founders Supernova.
A staple name within US house history, Paul Johnson’s musical accolades stand apart from most within the industry – releasing material via the likes of Dance Mania, Cajual, Relief, and Moody Recordings, the home of his legendary 1999 anthem ‘Get Get Down’. Following material via Patrick Topping’s Trick and an EP on Downtown Underground, the Chicago- native heads to Lapsus Music to deliver his latest single ‘Drive Me Crazy’ featuring Zoe Thorn, backed by a slick remix from label bosses Supernova. With releases via Defected, 8Bit, and elrow Music to name a few, plus their recent single ‘Lovely Summer Dreams’ on Blackboard which recently reached #3 in Beatport’s Deep House chart, the Italian pairing arrive in rich form and this momentum translates directly into their impactful take on the production.
Johnson’s original opens the package as he lays down commanding basslines beneath warping, escalating synths and Thorn’s hypnotic vocals, whilst Supernova’s take on the cut introduces breaks-influenced percussion, ever- evolving acid-tinged leads, and atmospheric builds and breaks to shape up the EP in style.'

"  An artist with a growing reputation within the underground dance fraternity, Sebastian Sellares makes his Meanwhile debut with his "Dunes at Dawn" EP.

After a 2018 debut for PHW Elements, Sebastian Sellares has made increasingly sizeable waves with his smooth and unique musical style. Already seeing his music signed to an array of high-profile imprints including onedotsixtwo, UV and Or Two Strangers, Proton Music's "Zen State / Jinsei" was a further notable highlight in October 2020 including remixes from Matias Chilano and Bedrock's Nick Muir.

The title-track opener is a gloriously atmospheric offering that builds gently over a rhythmic foundation of rolling top-line groove and pounding beat. Filtered pads soon enter the fray followed by atmospheric birdsong effects and rippling arpeggiated synth line that resonate with the "Dunes at Dawn" title. Rising to a spine-tingling zenith at the mid-point alongside deep, captivating bassline, the second half continues the rich melodic collage creating a sumptuous start to the EP.

Continuing the powerful rhythmic basis of the opener, "The Stars Above" scintillates with its chugging rhythmic vibe and syncopated bassline pattern. Evolving through subtle percussive urgency, dreamlike pads float across the mid-range beside steam-powered white noise waves, before intricately programmed synth plucks complete the foundations. Before long, undulating arpeggios glitter in delayed patterns as counterpoint phrasing adds emotion and guile to create a contemplative offering.

"Nocturne" completes the musical triptych, revelling in a subtle melodic hypnotism that blends acid-tinged loop with flowing analogue motifs. Panning the stereo spectrum with plucked phrases, a magnificent combination of counterpoint melodies rise and fall across a nine-minute magnum opus that results in another string to Sellares' increasingly powerful bow.

People often use the term ‘family’ these days, especially record labels; it’s a go to word that’s frequently over-used. But when it comes to Julian Wassermann & Raphael Mader it is highly appropriate as both are an important part of the Renaissance label roster with multiple releases to their names, ably demonstrating the future of house is in safe hands.

So, Renaissance were delighted when they got a call saying, “Guys, we’re teaming-up to start a new project devoted to electronica. Are you interested?” Their response was immediate to say the least, buoyed by the prospect of the label-family circle pulling tighter still... MODEM was born!

However, not satisfied with the strength of their burgeoning status, Julian and Raph decided to go a step further and invited heavyweight French production duo Betical to collaborate on what was to become ‘Marginal’, the first single taken from their forthcoming album, ‘Fahrenheit 52’.

'Marginal' was one of the first ideas we had,” explains Julian, “it’s a record full of wistful emotion and melancholy with that deep, dream-like quality that works so well with electronica.”

“We’ve both admired Betical for a long time,” Raph continues, “when they agreed to the collaboration we began by sending various sketches back and forth and they actually picked out ‘Marginal’”.

Betical then wasted no time in confirming their choice, “We immediately loved the track’s atmosphere and chord progression. We worked on a drum, added some melodies and a vocal and then kicked it back and forth until we all agreed it was over the finish line. We really enjoyed working with the guys and are proud of the final result!”

The latest release from Deepwibe Underground welcomes Paul Hamilton and CaThY K to the label for their debut EP. The former, born in Malta and now based in Dubai, is one of the underground’s most highly regarded progressive house artists. Paul has found a home on Armada, Balkan Connection, Droid9, Freegrant Music and Perspectives Digital, while his equally impressive DJ skills have seen him perform at Ministry Of Sound (Dubai) and Godskitchen (Dubai). Also hailing from Malta is CaThY K who has been a fixture of the country’s nightlife for the better part of two decades. Her unique track selection and exquisite programming skills have led her to perform in some of Malta’s trendiest venues alongside top international and Maltese talent. Also well established as producer, CaThY has been perfecting her craft for over six years and lays claim to an impressive resume, with releases via Another Life Music, Droid9, SLC-6 Music and Soundteller Records. Having delivered a track for Deepwibe’s Digital imprint earlier this year, Paul and Cathy now debut on the label’s primary platform with ‘Debauchery’.

Flexing their collaborative powers, the EP begins with the groovy sounds of the title selection. Here Paul and Cathy craft a deep, chunky foundation with a nostalgic tinge, while layers of flickering percussion and ominous atmospheres slowly surround the framework. This is mood setting material at it’s best and while the scope of the journey continues to grow it isn’t until the main break where we get multiple explosions of serotonin. Metallic riffs dominate the centrepiece, creating an electric air, all while maintaining the track’s cool low slung mood.

Selection two ‘Different Intentions’ continues on that same level with deep chugging grooves and exotic drums serving as the backbone for bleepy loops and waves of haunting atmospherics. A well crafted break sits at the core of the journey with nothing big or overblown to ruin the mood, but rather a smooth hazy build into powerful beats and soundscape science.

Rounding out the release is ‘Muusiiqaa’ which is mysterious and mystical from the outset. A heavier emphasis on effects makes for a tripper vibe compared to it’s predecessors, but the same groove-centric appeal ultimately carries the journey towards fluttery second act melodies, before a vortex of percussion and noise spark a commanding drop. Thrilling stuff from Paul and Cathy who make an impressive Deepwibe Underground debut with three dominate progressive creations. Don’t miss it.
