The year is 2k21 and we're looking back at the strangest, most disconcerting and disheartening year in the history of electronic dance music, maybe even the history of the entire music industry ever. With no shows, no open dancefloors, no festivals, no clubs and no gatherings the past 12 months took a draining and constraining toll on everyone on the scene and the Hive Audio label crew certainly is no exception, but...

...we survived, we are still here, we re-adjusted, re-evaluated and we are ready to cope with the recent status quo as long as it's needed, with a strong release schedule and big plans in place for 2k21. Yet despite all the madness we, you and all of us dealt with we also happened to release a bunch of tunes throughout the last year, tunes that probably didn't make it to (m)any dancefloors given the circumstances but still are as strong, powerful and most of all uplifting as they used to be when they were released.

So here they are again – or at least a few of them which are what we consider to be the „Best Of 2020“, the tunes that defined the sound of  Hive Audio throughout the year that has passed, the cuts that made us smile, move and shake our bodies in isolation and we hope that they gonna make you shake yours as well - no matter if your in for uplifting House, groove-focused, melodic TechHouse or deep late night (Neo)Trance.

'Mexican artist, Replicanth, debuted 'Apolo' for us last year on our Floorplay Vol. 1 compilation. The VA included a little bit of everything for the most discerning selectors, and following its success, we are releasing some of the tracks as full EPs with both established and new artists on remix duties, in keeping with the ethos of the series. In original form, 'Apolo' is an emotional journey dripping with soul. Heavily delayed piano hits, vocals and instruments float above the ether of lazy harmonica reverbs, icy pads and ethereal adlib washes. Hypnotic and warm, it feels like a favourite audio blanket lovingly wrapped around your shoulders as you look wistfully at the city at night twinkling against the glow of the moon. First on remix duties is benū, a newcomer from Brooklyn, New York with his first release. Marrying the original vibe with nuanced Latin flavours, he develops a sensational stripped back organic Afro feel. Next, Belarusian supremo, Michael A adds his considerable talent. Thumping drums pair with far away pads and insistent percussion for a robust late night bruiser. Label favourite Electronic Youth takes the track in a groovy disco direction. Treading that fine line between disco and tech, the bassline is the star of this show. Finally, returning the favour of a remix, Brazil's CANCCI drops a pacey deep house vibe with tons of personality. '

Welcome Lonya and Mattia Pompeo with their "Lofstrom Levitation" EP. The two producers joined forces and crafted two nice and smooth with a groovy and uplifting vibe. "Lofstrom" is has a laid back beat and and a catchy repetitive progression. "Levitation" is straight forward with an old school arpeggiator sound and electric guitar bits.

Italian pair Supernova are back with more of their super fresh house, this time on the Blackboard label. 

State of Mind is a lively house track that is deep and smooth, with silky synths and chords bringing a Mediterranean feel. It's easy to see this one being dropped on an outdoor terrace as the sun sets, with hands in the air and smiles on faces. An excellent summer anthem.

Hot on the heels of the first volume released a few days ago, here comes episode two of our special #300 triple package. Turkish outfit Lunar Plane strikes first with the big-room-friendly “Aegean”, a bespoke minimal chugger traversing various moodscapes as it unfurls; from incantatory voice samples to melancholy-soaked breaks, through enslaving synth hooks and hectic drops. Township Rebellion’s sonic uppercut “About A Tribe” picks up the torch with poise and swagger, delivering a proper hypnotic slice of Afro folk-suffused techno bound to teleport you to distant times and geography in one snap of the finger - or one clap of the hand if anything.

Going in with the sizzling and smoothly jacking “Dichotomy Of Control", Tim Engelhardt sets the course on emotionally dystopian islands and coves. Letting the light break through a dark tunnel of robotic diktat, the producer gives his track an essentially hopeful breath and drive that keep on giving bar after bar. “On The Run” finds Annett Gapstream exploring intensely epic expanses where thunderous echoes entangle with finespun melodic accents and throbbing drum programming. Swerving onto further languorous Italo-disco horizons, Elif’s “Juno” puts on a captivating mix of cosmic arpeggiator, hushed vox and subterranean groove. 

Bjoern Stoerig's “KOF” could well be the brainchild of Stephan Bodzin and Pantha du Prince, with its sub-bass making waves in the low-end of the spectrum and washed-out oneirism beaming us up to a vast, barren headspace where Stoerig’s music weaves its way gently across endless pinewoods and secret clearings. Back to a hustling tempo and mood, Jiggler & Vincent Marlice “Union” tops it all off on a playfully bouncy mindset, ushering us in a dancing circle of pop-indebted vocals, laid-back oriental pads and mesmeric synth loops. A truly tripped-out jaunt, perfect for waving your arms as the sun rises past the sleepy skyline and high above the entranced crowd, you’re making one with.

Continuing a strong start to the year, Madloch’s Sound Avenue imprint welcomes Mariner + Domingo back to the label for a new EP. Enjoying a speedy rise through the landscape of organic and progressive house, the US duo showcased their music on a host of highly regarded imprints across 2020. Releases via Balkan Connection, RYNTH, The Purr and Stellar Fountain further highlighted the duo’s exotic sound. Now following the November release of their Sound Avenue debut ‘Le' Carnival’, the Florida residents make a return to the label with ‘Move On’. 

In what continues to be a fruitful partnership, Mariner + Domingo craft two of their finest cuts to date beginning with ‘Another Life’. Warm beats, submerged bass and rolling percussion set the piece in motion, as vocal phrasing and prophetic tones encase the framework. The vocal storyboard expands as the first act evolves, eventually shifting energy and mood into an emotive second act. Concise and haunting, Mediterranean motifs drift across the centrepiece, gently blanketed with misty melodies as the groove drops for a spirited finale.

The title selection ‘Move On’ follows suit with an equally impressive display of rhythm and musicality. Spacious and groovy, it’s a creation built around exotic drums, dulcet tones and blissful vocals. Cascading pianos and wispy effects converge as the first act unfolds, eventually melting down into a vocal-led break. Soulful wails drift in timeless suspension, as a trail of poignant pianos shifts energy into a percussive finale. It rounds out an exceptional EP from Mariner + Domingo, who make a welcome return to Sound Avenue as the year begins.
