The Cabin Project - The Lining

The rhythms of hip-hop provide a placemat for nervously melodic splendor and a melting pot of genres.  What are we to call this compellingly oddball mélange of rock, rap, jazz, reggae, and other influences, all in sway to some of the most mirthfully self-conscious streams of consciousness you’ve ever heard? We could call it attention-deficit-disorder rock. Or maybe we should just call it Forrest Day, the Bay-area bandleader who’s releasing his self-titled full-length debut on the Ninth Street Opus label. 

Cohorts include guitarist Terrell Liedstrand, a bandmate of Day’s since they were both 15, and bassist John Sankey, another high school buddy. Keyboard player Nick Wyner also came on board when the band was founded in 2006, and Jasper Skydecker joined up as their first full-time drummer a year later. When they went into the studio together for the first time, it was with several years of live performances under their belts and a chemistry that Day wanted to capture—and ever-so-slightly digitally tamper with.

“We hit analog tape with everything, but then dumped it into ProTools to manipulate it there,” says Day, who produced the album himself. “So a lot of it is like a big marriage between actual performance and then, in editing, turning some of the songs into loops—though it doesn’t really sound like it, because it’s so analog-sounding.” Day also points out that “there’s not a sample on the record. We brought in real violin players, who were in the room with real saxophones.”

Day’s amusingly confessional songwriting dabbles in social commentary about corporate greed (“Hoarders”) and our overmedicated society (“Meds”), among other concerns. But he returns again and again to everyday struggles common to itinerant musicians and non-musicians alike: bad bosses, lost jobs, debt collectors, and the girlfriend as muse or unwitting patron of the arts. There’s an elaborate work ethic apparent in these meticulously crafted tunes that would seem to put the lie to lyrics that talk about being dreamy, uncertain, and aimless. What we have on this striking debut, then, is a collection of incredibly focused anthems for an unfocused generation.

Listening to Greylag's debut EP, The Only Way To Kill You, one can almost hear the relief pouring out of Andrew Stonestreet and Daniel Dixon's gentle, lilting harmonies and spare, acoustic guitar murmurs. Although new on paper, the Portland, Oregon-based band is the product of a multi-year, cross-country journey of friendship, emotional trial and self-refinement that while finally complete, is really only just beginning.
Both talented musicians in their own right-- Stonestreet grew up in a highly musical family and began performing at age 11; Dixon attended the esteemed San Francisco Conservatory of Music and plays a gaggle of instruments—Andrew and Daniel entered each other's musical wavelengths in 2007 through a mutual acquaintance. Stonestreet was living in his native West Virginia and Dixon had taken up shop in Louisville, Kentucky. Neither however, were content in their surroundings. "I felt pretty displaced," Dixon, a native of northern California says of Louisville. "I felt like I didn't have a home anywhere." Adds Stonestreet, who had recently left Nashville feeling quite disenchanted, "I had entered into a kind of dark state." When they started playing music together, the two immediately were attracted to each other's sensibilities, and their friendship quickly followed suit. But it wasn't until they both permanently made the move to Portland-- Dixon arrived in May 2009 and Stonestreet would come approximately nine months later-- that their musical partnership went beyond "jamming" and evolved into a full-fledged creative endeavor. "That was the first time we got the sense of, 'it's on,'" Dixon says.
In the past year, Greylag has worked at developing their home base in the Pacific Northwest, reaching sell-out status in their home town of Portland along with recent tours through the western US and Canada. This last fall, Greylag was part of the Gomez and Kopecky Family Band tour and will be touring with Augustana this Spring in between their first appearances at SXSW and Sasquatch festivals.

In the winter of 2011 Miss Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion traveled west from their forest home in Massachusetts to the metropolis of San Francisco. They met up with the Rondo Brothers who sometimes prefer drum machines to banjos and other times use banjos as drum machines. Miss Guthrie and Mr Irion lent their voices and musical talents to a small batch of songs in collaborative form and a wonderful new sound was born. East Meets West. Blueberry Mountain touched down on Potrero Hill. Beat-Folk has never sounded so good. Take the journey of All Through The Night and let yourself wander through the city streets covered by old growth New England foliage.

When Colin was 19 years old and freshly dropped out of college, his friend played him two albums that forever changed his life – Whiskeytown’s "Stranger's Almanac" and Lucinda Williams’ "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road". Until this point Colin had entirely passed over "country" music as stupid and for rednecks but there was something about those records in which he really identified with and found so much beauty in. The spaciousness, the phrasing, the economy of words, the tempo and the sadness all resonated deep within Colin. Those records led him to so much more of the music that eventually would inspire The Roseline.

	Eventually Colin moved to Santa Fe, NM to go to art school and was again bored with his studies when he decided to buy a $100 guitar for his 21st birthday. The next door neighbor taught Colin some chords, his fingers got calloused and within the next year he had a notebook full of 70 songs. Colin moved back to Kansas, burned a CD of about 19 songs and gave them to his good friend, Paul. Paul called Colin after listening to two songs and said that they had to start a band.

	And so The Roseline was born.

	Colin and Paul went on to record 2 full lengths -- "A Wall Behind It" and "Lust for Luster", which were self-released, critically acclaimed yet seriously lacking in sales. By 2009 the band had all but dissolved. Members moved, quit or were struggling with alcohol and drug addiction, as cliché as that sounds. Colin had pretty much given up on music at that point. He was finishing school as an Art History student when he went through a rough breakup with a girl he was engaged to. With 5 years down the drain, naturally he wrote a song cycle that would become "Vast as Sky".

	The record, mixed by the Jim Greer (Foster The People, Galactic, Kid Beyond, Irma Thomas) and Wayne Skeen, conveys the arc of a relationship-- starting with a saccharine sweet love song and ending in utter turmoil. It is by far Colin’s most personal, confessional and unashamedly sad record he’s ever made. But as the great art critic Dave Hickey once said, "Sad songs are the only songs." Heartbreak is simply a timeless theme and Colin did it justice – tastefully.

	That’s what The Roseline wanted -- to make an honest record and hope that it communicates with people. After all, it's a subjective business were in.
