In nineteen fifty-eight I took a trip on a bus,
Mama took me shopping, it was just the two of us.
I felt like a big boy, sitting high up in that chair.
No one could convince me that I did not belong there.

In nineteen fifty-nine I got on the bus that day.
Mama tried to hold tears, told me to be brave.
Headed off to school that day, sitting high up in that chair.
It took some convincing, felt I did not belong there.

In nineteen sixty-eight we rode the bus to the football game.
Sat in the back with Mary Anne, she was my current flame.
I felt like a man that night, sinking way down in that chair.
I was so convinced that we were the perfect pair.

In nineteen seventy-one we rode the bus to the game again.
This time I was on the team, certain we would win.
Knew I was a man that night, sitting high up in that chair.
We were all convinced, yes we had bravery to spare.

In nineteen seventy-two, sitting on the bus once more.
Heading off to basic, fighting someone else’s war.
I felt like a boy again, clinging to that cold, hard chair.
We were all convinced that bus would leave our souls stripped bare.

In nineteen seventy-three ride that bus just one last time.
This is where I grew up, but it seems like it’s not mine.
Didn’t know quite what I was, clinging to that chair so tight.
You’ll never convince me this has ever been my fight.

So many friends I had never got back on that bus.
They came home in wooden boxes, didn’t come home with us.
I am still convinced there was no reason they should die.
Thinking ‘bout that bus again surely makes me want to cry.
