The phrase "perfect is the enemy of good" is an aphorism commonly attributed to Voltaire in 1770, but even he was apparently quoting an Italian proverb that had been around for a while.  It seemed to me to be a good idea for a song.

This song began as an anniversary present to my wife, Eve. I started it on the day of our 22nd anniversary and finished it by our next anniversary. 

This song, for some reason, is Eve's favourite of all of my songs.

Inspired (surprisingly) by a fallout with my ex-landlord, the song explores shifting dynamics, emotional confusion, and the sting of unmet expectations. While it sounds like a breakup song—and is framed like one—it was actually born from a non-romantic fallout, which is part of my songwriting signature: turning everyday conflicts into grand anthems.

Produced by Jay Ives, Downhill blends gritty rock instrumentation with a polished pop structure and a soaring, catchy hook. Its dynamic build mirrors the inner turmoil of navigating miscommunication and power shifts in any kind of relationship—romantic, professional, or otherwise. A sweet, gentle pop song.  The original was written over 50 years ago and lost for more than 40.  It was found buried in a pile of old papers that might never have been uncovered if it wasn't for our Covid years.  This version is the first recording of the song, but it's grand entry into the world of song came when a four part harmony version (that I co-arranged with choir leader Susan Stott) was chosen by our local choir for performance.  It was a very special moment when I first heard 50 people singing a song that had only ever been sung by one person its long life.
