Six Pack Away

This is the very first song that impressed me as a teenager in my college folk club. Two ordinary-looking male engineering students stood up, harmonized and made this song come alive and ring out. Several decades later, I have done my own version

In England in 2023, English folk music is largely scorned (in England only; there is more respect in other UK nations) and is the butt of many popular myths and jokes. Some of us persevere in this unpromising field, withstanding any mockery... (so far).

In English public houses and bars, before radio & TV entertainment kept everybody indoors from 1952 onward, everybody then alive had a party-piece (often from childhood) that could be performed in public for friends and family or in a public house.  And that there, my friends, were (in those days) the last remnants of that there English what-dya-may-callit folk music. Or thereabouts. Some of us survive.

A couple of months ago I had the chance to jam with a couple of friends on guitars at a dinner party. We played a few Stones covers, and the vibe was ok. Then suddenly someone named the Velvet Underground, so I started strumming and singing a classic number we used to perform pretty often when we were young, "I'm Waiting For My Man". I could really feel it, and when I got home I thought it was worth trying to record it. In the past we used to cover the Live 1969 version, but this time I tried to blend it with a couple of other renditions, namely the 1972 Transformer Tour performance and an acoustic demo recorded in 1965. Quite obviously, I ended up adding to this bizarre jumble my own touch. I completed most of the tracking in about a week, but it took me a long time before trying to record vocals. It somehow sounded dull and trivial to my ears, so I had lost interest in finishing the song. Then a couple of weeks ago I felt inspired and I did the vocals. I also added an organ and a Cretan lyra parts, to make the ending section sound a bit more exciting.
Hope you'll enjoy this studio jam, I think it sounds quite unusual if compared to the rest of my stuff, but at the end of the day it's not so bad to listen to.
