I Saw the Sound

The first time I tried it
Was deep underground
an abandoned subway tunnel
3:30 a.m
My friend said
“You’re about to see the shape of music.”
I laughed, shook my head
But thirty minutes later
I could hear the lights breathing

The walls started sweating
Concrete rippled
Like the bass was dropping into liquid stone
Someone handed me a cup of water
But inside it I saw a spinning universe
Each bubble dancing
To the rhythm
And me
I was melting into it

I couldn’t tell what was me
What was air
What was the scream of the synths
What was the echo of my own heartbeat

I saw the sound
It was purple
Like light, crying
I heard the colors
And they whispered
“Don’t be afraid. You’re finally awake.”

Someone spoke to me
But he had no mouth
His voice exploded inside my skull
Like an entire galaxy blasting Psytrance
I sat on the floor
And watched the ground dance
It danced better than I did

And in that moment
I realized I was the techno
I was the beat
There was no “me” anymore
Just one giant hallucination
Made from every raver’s dream
And then
It all collapsed
Into silence
A bass drop with no sound
Only my heartbeat
And the lights
Breathing

And in that moment I knew
Freedom isn’t running away
Freedom is no longer being afraid
To be seen for who you are
