KӣR is the solo production epithet of WhyBaneWhy, resident DJ of Belgrade’s hallowed halls of techno, Drug§tore. WhyBaneWhy’s sets incorporate a wide range of influences to travel far off beaten paths drawing in influences from techno to new wave, incorporating power electronics, obscure ambient, folk music, twisted echoes found lost deep in wormholes and whatever else it takes to get you feeling thoroughly unsettled, lost and disorientated whilst working up a sweat. KӣR takes all this and pushes it farther using hardware, live. Its visceral music, embracing drone, repetition, rippling soundscapes and obscure sonic horizons, sailing confidently where many others dare not venture. Shaman music, drum led hypnosis. KӣR gifts us with a deep tribal mix, at turns dark and disorientating, others beautiful and light. This is music from the other world coming to take you home.

Having joined the Anjunadeep ranks last year via the label’s Explorations EP series, Finland’s Tontario has gone on to deliver a string of well received releases, including a stunning rework of Ólafur Arnalds’s ‘Öldurót’. Tontario now returns to the label with another set of adventurous downtempo cuts on the four track ‘From Below EP’

The EP opens with the string-laden textures of ‘Löpeld’, before drifting into the floating groove of ‘Rove’ (featuring Benjamin Gustafsson). Next ‘Vilsenhet’ serves up a heavier brooding vibe to the package before rounding off the EP on an ambient note with ‘Worriers’.

What are you supposed to do if your loved one is struggling in life and driving you away? Vittoria Fleet creates an EP that rubs salt into the wound, and it’s a beautiful pain.

Especially when living in a metropolis like Berlin or London you will know this type of person: someone with a talent, but standing in their own way. Maybe they party too much, continuously mess up in relationships or they just don’t get their shit together. It’s kinda tolerable if this is just an acquaintance, but what if this is actually your loved one?

Singer Giada Zerbo captures the essence of these emotions with her ethereal and sultry voice while producer Allan Shotter creates an organic electronica soundscape to it: title track “Entangled” hits you with its raw energy of slow violence. “Return” is the wish to bring your loved one back onto the right path. “Headradio” is the battle between closeness and dislodgement, between hope and constant longing.

The Berlin-based duo asks you all the questions: how much responsibility do we carry for the other one? Is it ok to parent our struggling lover? Is it egoistic not to? What if you see no sign of upturn? When is it ok to give up? When is it ok to think about yourself?

The four tracks of Vittoria Fleet’s “Entangled EP” don’t have an answer to all this. But they feel your pain.

Exclusive Odd Beholder 'Lighting (Fejká Remix)'

Black Forest breed Fejka just remixed Swiss pop duo Odd Beholder turning the original song into an melancholically yet beautifully sounding piece of electronic music. Shortly before the release of his en’Lighting’ remix release on Sinnbus Torture the Artist spoke to Brian, how close friends call Fejka, about his preference for melancholic soundscapes and female vocals, the elements that inspired him to remix Odd Beholder and – since the new Star Wars movie just hit cinemas around the globe – his perception of the dark side of music and people.

I’ve been a long time fan of Dmitry Taldykin‘s Moscow-based Dronarivm label which, thanks to the additional curation from Bartosz Dziadosz (aka Pleq) has always brought us treasures from the depths of ambient and modern classical waters. Many of imprint’s releases have been covered on these pages, so it’s no wonder that I’m excited in sharing the Headphone Commute Podcast platform with the founder to showcase Dronarivm’s upcoming releases in 2019 in this very special mix. Sven Laux is a Berlin-based artist and composer who returns to Dronarivm following ‘Paper Streets’, which was released in 2017. He has also previously released on labels such as Archives, Whitelabrecs and Archipel, producing anything from modern classical to experimental minimal music.

Daniela Orvin is also based in Berlin, a pianist, musician and composer who has to-date released her second album ‘Home’ on Sven’s ‘Seasides On Postcards’ label which to many, became a stand-out recording in 2018.
Around a similar time to the release and creation of ‘Home’, Sven had been creating some tracks for an album and felt that there was something missing. After casting his ears over Daniela’s work, he realised that piano was the missing piece of the jigsaw that he had been searching for in the album he had been culminating. He invited Daniela to his studio, they walked through what had been created up to that point and she became inspired to the point that they began to work together. The process was very intuitive as piece by piece their own styles collided effortlessly into what has become a completed album project.

‘The Writings’ plays out in the exact order in which the tracks had been worked on, providing an accurate account of the studio time in which these stories had been etched. During the process, Sven and Daniela became friends and the concept of the album itself has become about collaboration itself.
Typically when artists work together in tandem, particularly in modern classical or ambient music, the result tends to be loud and powerful, as the two voices compete for the sonic space. This is not so in ‘The Writings’, as the artists showed great restrain between one another, a respect for each other’s expertise. Piano isn’t everywhere on this album, nor are Sven’s ‘hollywood strings’. Both are present, along with many many more wonderful elements. But each is afforded its own time and space, in a truly patient but evocative and enthralling listen, best enjoyed from start to finish.'

Sven Laux - Fading Light (from 'The Writings')

We’re pleased to welcome back Berlin based artist Sven Laux, responsible for the now out of print Schachmatt which we released in 2018. Sven has been no stranger to the Ambient and Modern Classical scenes since then, with a release on Archives, a collaboration with Daniela Orvin as well as working on his new label Seasides On Postcards.

ODD is the first album Sven has created in his new studio, after moving into a new place following the birth of his daughter. Whilst working on the album, he always had in mind that there are calm parts in life followed by faster parts. He depicts the peaks and troughs of our existence through soft swathes of orchestral ambience interspersed by moments of rhythmic strings and electronic pulses.
Sven draws inspiration from the film soundtrack greats and constantly strives to build a bridge between classical music and Ambient; in ODD he created an entirely digital album but worked hard to program the right timbres to achieve a realistic orchestral sound.

There is a settled feeling to ODD thanks to long passages of repetitive strings and this forms the backdrop of the album as a broadly melancholic listen, laced with emotion from Sven’s own experiences. These are intended to draw the listener into the stories and absorb them. An overwhelming new dawn of possibilities becomes the theme for Sven with his new home, studio and indeed the new life of his baby daughter beginning this chapter.
What does ODD stand for? One Dramatic Day? Opening Doors? Is it a phrase in German? Does it mean anything? It will remain undefined. For us, these seven untitled pieces serve as a cinematic milieu, with the monochrome packaging presented as close-up film reels covered in dust.
