A pivotal figure amid London’s queer club continuum, Joshua James follows up an iconic trilogy of releases on Phantasy with a powerful swerve into pure techno with ‘Amber Rush’, complete with a remix by close friend and Phantasy labelmate, Daniel Avery.

Crackling with energy, its pendulous drums reminiscent of The Chemical Brothers in their Battle Weapon mode, Amber Rush’ matches the thunderdome ready scope of a big-room anthem with waves of psychedelic texture. The result is guaranteed rapid-fire synapse tickling within even the best (or worst) adjusted of dedicated rave brains.

Avery’s metallic-tinted reimagining subtly shifts the aesthetic of ‘Amber Rush’, gliding out of the strobe and into the fog. Wisely following the course of undulating euphoria mapped out by James, Avery transforms acid tension into graceful heights and somehow deeper plunges, ultimately settling on a killer groove.

Based in London, U.K. Third Place Records aren’t your typical electronic music label. They specialize in what they like to call “curious dance music”, this ranges everywhere from breakbeat to jungle to leftfield house and beyond. For the second installment of their Third Place Dance Discs series they’ve called upon Stones Taro, a House & Breaks Producer and DJ from Kyoto, Japan. Stones Taro is deeply dedicated to furthering the house music scene in Kyoto, as he runs a house collective named “NC4K” (No Collar 4 Kicks) in his hometown with fellow DJ & Producer Lo-max.

“Full Train / Light On The Hill” is a two track EP that marks Stones Taro’s first vinyl release. The Kyoto native flexes his production chops over the two tracks, expertly layering rhythms, and dazzlingly lush ambient instrumentals. Stones Taro’s sampling of exotic birds on the first track, and the vocal sample he uniquely uses on the second track ensure that his EP perfectly fits the curious dance music aesthetic of Third Place Records. This is physically engaging and mentally stimulating electronic music unlike anything else you’ll hear.

While „Toulouse“ blends darker streams with aquatic hope, „Employee“ enjoys a big drop in the middle, just to continue on a more melodic note. The landmark 100th single on Phantasy arrives courtesy of label founder, DJ and producer, Erol Alkan. Originally recorded less than a year after Phantasy’s inception in 2007, ‘Automatic’ arrives in 2021 to both celebrate and anticipate resurgent dance floor abandon, blending elements of French touch and disco psychedelia with driving, raw percussion, as charismatic and gloriously high-energy as anything from Alkan’s extensive back catalogue of productions and remixes.

‘Automatic’ is available to download and stream digitally, and will initially be available as a limited edition pressing of 100 single-sided vinyl, housed in a screen-printed sleeve with each copy individually hand-numbered by Alkan himself.

Revered producer and composer Daniel Avery returns with a new album and live show, his most ambitious works to date. Channelling every corner of his sound, Tremor is a bold and transportive body of work through euphoric shoegaze, submerged techno, ambient soundscape and industrial bliss. It remains unmistakably Avery, yet dramatically evolved.


With the album Avery has welcomed an inspiring cast of collaborators, including the likes of Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Walter Schreifels (Quicksand / Rival Schools), bdrmm, Julie Dawson (NewDad), yeule, Ellie, Art School Girlfriend, yunè pinku, and Cecile Believe. Each artist leaves their indelible mark, yet the record’s true power lies in the communal spirit at its core.

“This is a living and breathing collective,” says Avery. “Since the earliest recordings, Tremor felt like a studio in the sky, a space in time through which we could all pass as artists”, he reflects. “It’s the welcoming spirit of acid house with the doors flung open wider still to allow in every influence from my musical journey: the warmth of distortion, the stillness inside intensity, the transcendental beauty of noise... They have always been there in my music but now it feels like those ideas are being transmitted in Technicolor. This is a record for the post-rave comedown kids, the guitar heads and anyone else who wants to come along for the ride. Everyone is welcome.”

Tremor will be released by Avery’s new home of Domino on 31st October.
