Sea Swim Sounds is one of a number of artworks created for the Sea Swim project (co-directed by Lara Goodband and John Wedgewood Clarke).  Sea Swim explores how swimming transforms the way we feel ourselves to be in our bodies and the liberating effects these changes have on the imagination.

Taking a phonographical approach, the sounds of Scarborough’s South Bay and the sea swimmers was captured over a period of 6 months using a range of recording techniques. Hydrophone, binaural, and ambisonic soundfield recordings have been combined to convey different perspectives, from the intimate to the panoramic.  At times, simultaneous recordings were taken, both above and below the waves in order to create an immersive experience. The poet’s voice has been recorded both in the studio and in situ, further exploring notions of internal and external space.

This album is presented in three scenes: a first dawn, an afternoon, and another dawn. The afternoon sequence is particularly spacious and relaxing, the dawn recordings fascinating and evocative. The ravens in these redwoods are rather characterful, giving all kinds of gargling and croaking calls.

We were so delighted to capture the sounds of Marbled Murrelets. These small seabirds  spend the day feeding at sea, before returning to roost high in a Redwood. They are a rare species, very endangered, and we are privileged to hear them as they wing seawards on their morning 'commute'.

Les Suetes is the song of the wind over the Northern forests.

This album is an uninterrupted soundscape, featuring the high winds that blow across the boreal plateau of the Cape Breton Highlands of Nova Scotia, Canada. Recorded in a sheltered old growth Acadian Forest, it is an intimate exploration of this unique weather phenomenon.

Dawn comes to the giant sequoias of Yosemite's Mariposa Grove, the largest trees in the world.

It is a June morning, the peak of the spring breeding season. The dawn chorus evolves minute by minute, as a variety of species wake up, sing and leave to go off for breakfast. The single note of the Mountain Quail excites the reverberation of the forest, revealing the space around us.

This album was recorded in a single take - unedited and unmixed.

"Mariposa Grove is away from the main Yosemite Valley, on the southern edge of the park. On my annual visits, I tried various locations in the grove before discovering a superb spot in the Upper Grove at an altitude of 6500 feet, free of creek noise. The place is magical. I return to it again and again, in all seasons."

Underwater recording of water flowing under the ice in a river.  My DIY 'binaural hydrophones', a couple of binaural earplug microphones covered in a thin layer of silicone, was basically dropped in ingdalselva by the exit of the pool next to the old mill house and slid under the ice a bit.  The stereo effects and clics and thumps are the microphones getting moved around by the water stream.

The reef-fringed islands of the Vanuatu group lie in the subtropical western Pacific Ocean. Their geographic isolation has lead to the evolution of species found nowhere else on earth.

Within earshot of waves breaking in the distance, this recording features the sounds of one of the Vanuatu's lowland rainforests.

"Encontro com o rio Angueira" ("Meeting with river Angueira") is a sound composition by Luís Costa, coordinator of Binaural/Nodar, made following a soundwalk he directed for Sons & Ruralidades Festival, organized between 19 and September 21, 2014 by AEPGA - Association for the Study and Protection of Asinine Livestock in the villages of Serapicos and São Joanico, both part of the municipality of Vimioso (Northeast of Portugal).

"Meeting with river Angueira" is a brief exercise of landscape hyperreality in the form of a spatiotemporal frame: the context of the banks of the river Angueira on a late summer morning condensed into twenty minutes of sound.

LISTEN FOR Spring Peeper, Red-winged Blackbird, Northern Flicker, Common Grackle, Canada Gooe, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Swamp Sparrow, American Crow, Black-capped Chickadee, American Toad, American Robin, and much more I'm sure!

I like this recording, which documents the lively chorus around the pond in late April. It's busy, for sure, but not overwhelming as are some dawn choruses. Note that I had to reduce the volume of one or two spring peepers in post because their calls were a rather ear-splitting. Thankfully that is easy to do these days, given the advanced editing tools at my disposal (I couldn't have easily pulled that off back in the reel-to-reel tape days).
