These are sketches and ideas for a new song cycle based on the story of Anacaona. Libretto by Edwidge Danticant, composed by Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), to be sung by Emeline Michel.  This work is an Emory Arts commission.

REDEMPTION SONGS & SONATAS is rooted in a world-view of civil rights for all. Conceived and performed by Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) on violin and Yayoi Ikawa on piano, this intimate program features some of DBR’s signature and most poignant works infused with the spirit of liberation and freedom. From Bob Marley’s Redemption Song to the Haitian and Israeli national anthems, REDEMPTION SONGS & SONATAS is a composer’s view of our desire to define our selves, our world, and sometimes, one another.

Eunbi Kim is a collaborator, creationist, and a dear friend. I am delighted to have created a new work for her, IT FEELS LIKE A MOUNTAIN, CHASING ME, for piano and (her) pre-recorded voice. The conversations on the recordings include an intimate landscape of her life as a young, ambitious and grateful, South Korean artist. She loves her music and her family. It's the type of work that makes me re-think all I am doing as a composer. I am so grateful to share this with you.
