Like so many others out there, I'm a huge fan of Tom Waits for his songwriting and performances. And this song is one of his earlier beauties, simple and direct. Such a story teller, a scene painter and the master of the story within the story, the acceptance and resignation. The lover of pretty things in a shadowy world. I recorded this quick and dirty on my iPhone, no mic, just the basic song...because I love singling it.

BOOM BOOM BOOM

I always enjoyed playing this song, especially when playing music with friends. It's simple, four chords, easy, fun vocals and harmonies, played it many times. When an old friend recently suggested I should cover it, I first thought it would be hard to do justice to it, but then I put my usual spin on it and figured out something that I thought would be worthwhile. It's far from the Van Morrison version, a little out there perhaps, and closes with a snippet from "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". My apologies for anyone expecting a retread here....

Brown Eyed Girl (cover)

The first record I ever bought for myself was The Rolling Stones' 45 with "As Tears Go By" by Mick Jagger ("Gotta Get Away" was the "A" side I believe). Simple but it always impressed me with the strings and melancholy sound. Marianne Faithful did a terrific version of it as have others. No need to rehash the original version which was done so well back in the 60's so I came up with this up tempo, slightly "bluegrassy" interpretation that some Stones fans will find annoying but hopefully others will enjoy.

As Tears Go By (cover)

Although not generally a big fan of the Bee Gees, I always connected with this song, even as a young teenager when it came out (1969). Melodramatics are typically hard to take seriously but I am a sucker for the ones done right. So I gave this a quick shot with a country flair and hope the Bee Gees fans will forgive me...

The Joke Was On Me (Bee Gees cover)

An old favorite that I continue to be a sucker for every time I hear the Righteous Brothers recording from the 60's. I finally caved in to trying my hand with this acoustic interpretation using a very simple guitar accompaniment and harmony vocals. Can't beat what Medley and Hatfield did with it so as I usually do with covers, I gave it my own spin.

He won his first Grammy in 1991 and at age 70 he was named Artist of the Year by the Americana Music Association.  His songs have been recorded by the likes of Johnny Cash, Bettte Midler, Bonnie Raitt, George Strait and many others.  His new album , The Tree of Forgiveness is receiving so much acclaim. Another live interpretation of an old classic love song, this one was originally written by Jimmy Duncan and first recorded by the Sonny Land Trio back in 1957. But this caught most of our attention from the Bobby Helms recording later that same year. I’ve also been a big fan of the version released in 1968 by The Vogues. This started as a live recording that Nat once again brought to full life with her beautiful accompanying vocals and instrumental nuances.

Saw Donovan in concert in The Pavilion Theatre, Glasgow not so long ago, It was an anniversary concert, and he said that this was the first big place that he performed in, and it was like coming home. He sat crossed legged on a little rug on the floor, despite his old bones and charmed us with his music and storytelling. It was a very vibrant Glaswegian audience, a lot of them probably personal friends of old and family, so a great deal of heckling and laughter, which he took in his stride, and I'm sure he very much enjoyed the huge love and  warmth that filled the theatre that night!
Love his music, and difficult to choose only one, but this was a favourite of a dear old friend.

This is based on a live recording that we feel captures the essence of the lovely emotions the song expresses.

Just a simple take on one of my old favorite pop-folk songs from the 60's (by Cyrkle). Did a quick iPhone recording and added harmonies and touch of banjo. I always liked the subtle balance between bitter and sweet in this song. He's telling her off but you can tell he's hurt and doing his best to look forward with optimism, which I think he accomplished, in one way or another.

Written by two Frenchmen, Pierre Delanoe (lyrics) and Gilbert Becaud (music) this now famous Everly Brothers recording from 1960 was originally recorded in French as “Je t’appartiens” by Gilbert Becaud. Nat and Craig feed on classic vocal harmonies and naturally greatly admire what the Everlys did with this beautiful love song. We cover this in a way that fairly closely follows the Everly approach.
