All My Dreams Have Turned to Ash

Program notes:
"Ripples in Infinity" is inspired by the paintings of Lee Krasner, who was an innovative and influential abstract-expressionist painter. She was a brilliant artist, but her career was often compromised by her role as ‘supportive wife’ to Jackson Pollock, as well as by the male-dominated art world. During her lifetime, Krasner found herself being ignored and devalued despite her invaluable contributions to the abstract-expressionist movement. This piece is a celebration of Krasner and depicts one of her most iconic paintings, "Shattered Color." This painting is striking to me because of its seemingly infinite layers – on the surface it’s vibrant and colorful, but underneath, there are glimpses of something dark and stormy with an almost unyielding intensity. Contrastingly, the vivid pinks and yellows dancing across the foreground have a whimsical, playful character to them. "Ripples in Infinity" portrays the splattering of paint onto the canvas and the multitude of different characters that weave in and out of the painting’s ostensibly endless texture. It also tells the story of a woman, who like so many others, had to struggle to build the timeless legacy that she deserved.

Program Notes:

Over the past few months I have been working in a classroom at a local preschool. This position has given me the incredible opportunity to form close bonds with many different children from diverse backgrounds, and I have found this work to be meaningful and rewarding. However, like many teachers in this current political climate, I have inevitably thought about the worst-case scenario: what would I do to protect these children in the event of a school shooting? In the United States, teachers are increasingly being expected to sacrifice their lives to protect their students. But the truth is, in the event of a school shooting, I don’t know what I would do. I would like to say that I would take a bullet for any of my students, but it is impossible to know.

Ultimately, teachers should not have to grapple with these kinds of questions. It is not fair to ask teachers to be the first line of defense in the event of a shooting, and it is unacceptable that this aspect of our American culture has reached a point where many consider arming teachers in the classroom to be a more viable solution than enforcing reasonable gun control measures. Teachers already dedicate their lives to educate and provide an enriching and safe classroom environment for children—the prospect of dying should not be added to this already heavy undertaking.

"The Front Line" is a meditation on my experiences of being an educator in an age where school violence is increasingly normalized.

I would like to thank a special friend who helped me throughout 2018. My best friend for over 10 years, Andras David. He is loving without requesting love in return, he is careless and firm in his values and doesn’t expect any special treatment for that. He was there for me through a major depressive episode (all of 2018) and has always been empathetic and caring towards those less fortunate than him. I would like to dedicate part of this piece to him.

This piece is also dedicated to Joe Connor, one of the finest musicians and kindest people I know. Throughout our long-distance collaboration, We created a piece with deep beauty and meaning. This piece is inspired mainly by his playing.

Program Notes

This piece was composed in honor of my uncle, who waited 6 years so far for his application to live in the United States. We don't know when he will move forward, but statistics show we still have another 6 years.

This piece is in 5 sections, each part pertaining to a specific aspect of the petition for U.S. immigration from his perspective. Even from his privileged position of having family in the US and the resources to follow this process, you will find that immigration to the US is a daunting task that takes many years, and even a third of your life.
