CockTail d’Amore, the new Berlin-based label (and long-running monthly party) run by DJ/producers Discodromo and Boris, welcomes Steven Warwick a.k.a. Heatsick to the crew.

Heatsick, a brit from east anglia who now also calls Berlin his home, has built up a name for himself over the last five years, having released a number of limited edition cassette tapes and CD-Rs on labels like Alcoholic Narcolepsy and Not Not Fun. Now CockTail d’Amore gives his the prestige of his very first 12” maxi-single, “Dream Tennis”. 
Heatsick’s latest odyssey is based entirely on sounds from a vintage Casiotone keyboard, with the majority of the keys missing, appearing something like a boxer’s smirk after losing a particularly brutal fight. But even with such a punkish approach, Heatsick’s experimental attitude finds him able to coax layers of melodic interplay and jacking rhythms across its ten-and-a-half-minute duration. Never before has his Chicago house influence shined through so clearly, for a new permutation on his style, what might be referred to as “kaleidoscopic music”, a term that Ron Hardy certainly would have appreciated.

Diego Morales of Santiago, Chile, a.k.a. Diegors, provides his own version of the track. Diegors is one of the key players from Matias Aguayo’s Cómeme imprint (under this alias as well as Fredi Michel) and fleshes out the more lo-fi sounds of Heatsick’s original into a panoramic, playful house number, like a spaced-out Mr. Fingers track.

Finally, on the flip side, a certain Norwegian royal figure filters “Dream Tennis” through his own prismatic lenses: 
Prins Thomas needs no introduction to those already familiar with the so-called “space disco” sound of the last few years, but for those of you living in a cave (cavemen are the original bears, and after all, hirsute hunks are CockTail’s biggest fanbase), this Oslo dweller is responsible for the respected Full Pupp label and is half the duo Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas whose followers include not just European DJs but American indie rockers. This drastic reworking of “Dream Tennis” is made from 100% newly recorded audio, following the psychedelic sprawl of the original but with more of a live band feel, with dashes of kraut rock and acid.

It was their approach and faithful reproductions that we named this release. Archetypes are a collectively-inherited unconscious idea, pattern of behaviour or thought that is universally present in individuals or a recurring symbol or motif in art or mythology. It is this exact thing we see here in this release, a train of consciousness with three distinct personalities.

Swiss artist and veteran producer Ripperton contacted the ESP Institute out of the blue mid-2017 to share a gorgeous mix of self-produced material, a collection of pieces made without any agenda outside of representing the self, not geared toward the dancefloor or a specific environment but simply a bi-product of introspective exploration. We were floored, the mix was on constant repeat in our world for weeks, then was subsequently pulled apart into separate titles to form this beautiful double LP, Ripperton’s debut with the label. The title 'Sight Seeing' speaks of someone stepping outside their current reality to look in the mirror, as if to ground themselves and keep sight of who they are in a world of extreme highs and lows. Inspired greatly by expansive landscapes and views from airplane windows (imagine your commute flying over the Alps every weekend), Ripperton describes this collection as postcards to himself, messages from his subconscious recorded on tape (both conceptually and literally), melancholy soundtracks to the Mondays that follow weekend journeys. While musical genres tend to cycle through bandwagon moments, the ESP Institute strives to operate independently of these, and while 'Sight Seeing' is undoubtably an Ambient album, we’re simply proud to revel in the chance moment where an esteemed artist such as Ripperton spreads his wings in a beautifully unexpected mode of expression.

After making a memorable debut on Catz ‘n Dogz’ Pets Recordings with 2017’s melodic house roller ‘Grateful’, An On Bast aka Anna Suda is back on her compatriots’ imprint with another distinctive release.

Suda has composed work for modern dance performances, and it’s not unimaginable that ‘The Ballet Began At Eight’ might be used for the same purpose. Its woozy submerged
synths coalesce in a floaty, summery haze, animated with a bobbing beat to create a perfect ambient scene-setter.

‘Life in a Hammock’ is livelier than its title suggests, with jaunty stabs laid over spacey, muddied acid synths. ‘Para’ keeps us on our feet, hips moving to its steady, tribal beat, chant-like African vox and persuasive handclaps, while closing track ‘Sway’ blends elements from the previous three. Stiching calming, flutey synths to Afro-beats, a rippling arp and warm chords in a dazzling, dancefloor-geared finale.
 
It's another varied, deftly executed release from one of Poland’s leading ladies.

Synonymous with Detroit, Techno, and Tresor, Scan 7 have remained protagonists of the Berlin-Detroit axis since it was first forged in the sweaty obsidian of the club’s original Wertheim vault home. Now, over 20 years later, the masked techno collective pay tribute to the triptych’s matted histories on ‘The Resistance EP’.

With identifiable nods to Scan 7’s Underground Resistance affiliations – the label that launched the group, and whose militaristic and political philosophies can be found littered throughout their discography – the EP begins with quintessential Detroit strings and groove before delving into darker techno territory. On the A-side, “The Resistance” offers an uplifting and delightfully nostalgic jaunt through dance music past, using all those favourite and immortal house tropes to deliver instant gratification. Meanwhile, the B-side shows off Scan 7 as masters of warm, yet shadowy techno – plus their trademark drum work – in the hypnotic “Why Not?” and driving, basement-ready “In & Out Of The Groove”. 

Alongside many outings on Tresor’s renowned compilation series, Scan 7 produced two albums for the label – ‘Dark Territory’ in 1996, followed up by ‘Resurfaced’ in 1999 – before leader TrackMasta Lou’s Cratesavers Muzik took over as the group’s primary recording outlet. ‘The Resistance EP’ is a welcomed return to Tresor from one of its stalwart artists, and paves the way for a retrospective compilation on 20 years of Scan 7, due out at the close of the year.
