First up for The Mix is Danny From Miami 🌴

@dannydaze takes us on a trip through Miami dance music history, diving into the irregular rhythms he grew up with and nodding to the new wave of flag-bearers. It also features an in-depth interview, exploring  his journey from childhood DJing to time in prison to rising up as Miami’s favourite figurehead, and the first explanation of the concept behind his long-awaited debut album ‘::BLUE::’.

"With this mix, my intention is to show a side of the IDM world I grew up with, steering away from the misconception that IDM is chaotic kitchen utensil-like sounds. I wanted to show a softer side focused on “danceable IDM” and electro. Music you can still bop your head to. As a youngster, I grew up dancing to non-traditional rhythms coming out of labels like M3rck, Schematic, and Beta Bodega, so I wanted to represent quite a bit of this Miami-infused sound along with some newer acts I’ve been immensely into at the moment," he says.

The design pays homage to a previous Mixmag logo from the ealy ’90s, nodding to our heritage while using the square and rectangular building blocks to construct an aesthetic that works cohesively with contemporary design elements and digital motion systems. 

We’ll still be bringing you the Cover Mix, The Lab and occasional sets in other formats, with The Mix is taking the place of our In Session and Impact features, intending to bring an updated look and vision to our flagship weekly DJ profile and sequencing them into one place, without separation. It's A Fine Line, Blackstrobe, Kill The DJ, Volga Select, Les Discques De La Mort and Amour, Acide; the list goes on for projects and labels Ivan Smagghe has been involved in over the years. A lover of records first and foremost, the London based Parisian has carved a career of eclecticism that's seen him often play with Andrew Weatherall. In more recent times, he's found himself working on music with Rupert Cross, an in-demand composer who counts Hollywood, the National Theatre and Kanye West as some of his past collaborators. Together, they've released a string of releases all over the course of 2017, with labels such as Huntley & Palmers and Vladimir Ivkovic's Offen releasing some of their standout work, the latter putting out their debut album MA back in March.

Although recorded chronologically before MA, Smagghe and Cross' second LP collaboration, Timothy Dalton came out on Monday on Idle Press. Described in the promo sheet as a 'spaced out opera by the Silver Apples', the LP features guitar work from Tim Felton, vocals from Andrea Balency and drums from Roman Turtev.  It's an ongoing partnership that's wonderfully touching upon multiple genres of electronic and rock music without singling out any particular one. We caught up with Ivan for a quick chat about his new project with Cross, Le Food in Brussels and record shopping in the eighties. His Truancy Volume, coming up at over an hour and eighteen minutes, is a tripped out amalgamation of records leaning towards the 'non-danceable'. An expert in this area, he's described Truancy Volume 191 as slow, with plenty of records being played at the wrong speed. Fans of his regular radio shows on NTS should find comfort in this one.

Paul Rose takes time out from being @scubaofficial and running @hotflush to drop the first LP under his SCB moniker. A kind of darkside re-rendering of what he does in Scuba, SCB’s music tends towards grainy techno and sci-fi dystopia. Caibu guts the Scuba sound and leaves the bare essentials behind - 808s, 303s, a threadbare array of synths and samplers. The result is a record of hypnotic, unsettling minimal techno bangers.

Bleep Mix #22 - SCB

German house hero Kevin Over’s mission with DJing and producing runs somewhat deeper than most. The things that made club culture so vital in the first place — the breaking down of social barriers, the experience of coming together through music, the creation of unique spaces away from the norms of day-to-day society — form the very heart of what he does. 

Alongside releases on Kerri Chandler’s Madhouse Records, Gerd’s 4lux, Truesoul, Get Physical, and other A-grade imprints, he continues to study for a degree in sociology. It’s this other side of his life that forms the crux of his interests in dance music. “Taking part in and actually being responsible in building up certain societies which have their own morals and which develop their own behavior and character makes every club night special to me” he says. In age when people are coming to dance music through commercial channels with no grounding in the culture or history of the context in which it blossomed and evolved, it’s refreshing to hear such salient words from an artist in their mid-20s.

Whether he’s making raw, jacking house grooves, deeper, soul-drenched stuff or Detroit-flavoured workouts, his music is always muscular, intriguing and captivating. House music is his palette, but there’s myriad colours within it. “Musically, I like to see myself in an infinite swirl of musical progression and development. My aim is to never stick in any field, but getting in there, switching positions, and reproducing these experiences and feelings through my own sound... avoiding repetition while keeping my own character and expression.” He realises this ethos through an incredibly crisp, punchy, sophisticated production quality.

His DJ sets switch gears through different levels of house, techno and disco, from the roots of the music to his own freshly-cooked studio productions. He has played across the world from Australia and New Zealand to Argentina, London, Stockholm, Barcelona, Brussels, Dublin and Berlin. He relishes the challenges and benefits that come with playing at different times of night — whether that’s warming up, playing peak time or the closing set. “I love to play all kinds of different locations to create different atmospheres. The magic of the impossibility of the replicability of every night fascinates me. Every night needs a different key and taking the risk to find the right one instead of just brutally barging the doors down... that’s what keeps it exciting. The unexpected and unplanned possibilities and spontaneity of a night are what excite me as a DJ.”

@dannydaze has proven incredibly hard to pin down since he first emerged. After starting down a path that very quickly took him to the best clubs in the world but off the back of a sound that wasn't really his, he has managed to rewrite perceptions. After deciding to do things his own way, at his own pace, he is now known for what he really loves: techno, electro and IDM. Just recently he continued his collaborative work with Brazilian RHR on four dark, gritty and evocative cuts on OmniDisc, and has more music on the way soon on Schematic Records. 

This mix hints at what to expect from that EP, says Danny. "Due to the current conditions, I decided to go with chill zone session for this one mixed live with a bunch of the styles that influenced me over the last 20 years. Went a bit more trip-hop/IDM/electro with it which points to the direction the upcoming EP and album later in the year. Hope everyone has a nice week." So strap in for two freewheeling hours of interplanetary sonics, churning rhythms and otherworldly cinematics that will start your week right.
