The project name »A / B« references several aspects of the cooperation: The initials of the artist names Akaroid and BYDL, the distance from A to B and the A and B sides of the tape cassette. The two artists worked in a shared folder in their home studios in Berlin and Vienna without ever meeting or making explanatory phone calls. Each musician brought in his own elements, samples, sound designs and production techniques in order to play in new parts using the ping-pong process, to arrange them or to change the material of the predecessor through manipulation and processing. The sound generation and the sound design took place via analog / digital modular synthesizers as well as in the laptop or via conventional miking of acoustic instruments (percussion). The entire EP is supported by a sense of cooperation and innovative ways not to lose common creativity to isolation, even when contact is prohibited.
The basis of all tracks consists of extractions from field recordings. The ambiences and original notes obtained in this way (mainly from Vienna and Berlin - A / B) were not only processed with effects, but also used via MIDI programming to output beat, melody or harmony. As a result, the recordings fit more organically into the track structure and are supported by the arrangement of those elements that are more familiar to the hearing of the recipients. On the one hand, the title of the track reveals the location of the respective field recordings used in the track and, on the other hand, the one or two-digit number in brackets shows how often the project was sent from A to B before it was finalized, which provides a unique insight into the artists way of production.

The pebbles fitted into his hand perfectly, like he was supposed to find them. They were almost identical - light grey, satisfyingly smooth, both almost spherical, like mini moons. The body of water in front of him was so calm and so still, but the temptation to throw the pebbles in and cause momentary yet satisfying chaos was strong. He threw them in one at a time and as each of the stones breached the surface of the water the ripples flowed outwards from the points of impact, vibrating through the water, merging and reflecting to create new geometry.

The Bristolian producer David Edwards, aka Minotaur Shock, returns to Bytes in 2021 with Qi, a six-track suite of inventive electronic compositions produced on a single bit of kit - the Electron Digitone synthesiser. These precision engineered tracks, mostly recorded in one take with no overdubs, recall golden-age IDM and 90s electronic music of the Rephlex/Warp school, from AFX to Autechre.

'Qua' has a dancefloor-friendly thrust, with chunky bass thwacks, unusual percussive tones and an array of bright synth lines that zip around the mix in a manner that is both rhythmic and melodious at the same time.

Originally released on Resound Records, a one-off subsidiary of the classic Gherkin imprint in 1990, the title track is a deep, hypnotic twelve minute ride through the Chicago underground, backed by the smooth yet emotional ‘Isolation’ and the euphoric rush that is ‘Silent Noise’. Timeless Chicago house at its best.
