Italian-born artist Riva Starr collaborates with New York-based DJ and producer Todd Terry on This Is The Sound. Previously, the pair have remixed each other’s solo productions, but their joint project on Hot Creations signifies a new beginning for the acclaimed producers.
Riva Starr talks about the significance of collaboration.

“Todd has been an inspiration since my early steps in house music,” he says. “With this EP, I just wanted to re-create some of the early house vibes with a modern twist. Feels good to have been able to collaborate with such a legend!” Together, the pair bring Riva’s vision to life on the title track, weaving a classic-house-tinged melody with crisp claps, penning an irresistible groove. Peak-time in every sense of the word. Riva Starr serves his solo offering on Creator, evoking a darker vibe. Chugging drums thump between a squelchy acid melody, paying homage to the birth of acid house in the late 80s, chopped with more contemporary textures.

Based in East London, Riva Starr’s roots lie in Naples, Italy. Having moved to London in 2008, Riva immersed himself in the UK tech house scene, playing across the country in Printworks, Motion, and Orange Yard to further afield in Pacha, Watergate, and Space Miami. As a multi-dynamic producer, Riva’s discography boasts remixes of work by Dennis Ferrer, Fatboy Slim, and Claptone and solo releases on Defected, Black Book Records, and his own Snatch! Records imprint. Grammy Award-nominated artist Todd Terry is a stalwart on the global house scene, breaking through in the mid-90s with the classic house heater “Keep on Jumpin” ft. Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown. Since then, Todd has produced a colossal body of work on Defected, Inhouse, Freeze Records, and several others, keeping his sound aligned with his New York heritage and reinventing it with a fresh flavour.

Riva Starr X Todd Terry - This Is The Sound

The modest legend Harry Romero has returned to Defected to give a preview of his coveted House Masters compilation, ahead of its full release. This sampler contains four exclusive updates of some of the producer's top tracks from his expansive career. Kicking things off the New Jersey producer revisits his collaboration with major house vocalist Inaya Day 'Rise Up', creating a more driven version drenched in classic house influences, full of funky percussion and vocal soul. What follows is 'Revolution', a powerful, modern Jersey jam, layering a familiar vocal loop over tight percussion guaranteed to get any dancefloor jumping. Another collaboration between Romero and Day, 'Just Can't Get Enough', is given a smooth update by Jamie Jones, giving clarity to the infectiously funky bassline. Rounding off the collection nicely, Romero returns to his Honey Dijon and Charles McCloud's 'Personal Slave' remix, turning it into an extended synth-spliced club workout, looping the vocal for a very fresh take on the murky and seductive original.

Following the tragic news that legendary US vocalist Kathy Brown is fighting stage 4 cancer, we wanted to give something back to an artist who musically we have all grown up with, and respect greatly. With that in mind, we have decided to release this record with all profits going to Kathy’s ‘GoFundMe’ campaign to help pay for her health care fees. All the original writers have allocated all publishing earnings, with the artists and Toolroom also pledging all of their royalties, in the quest to get Kathy back on the road to a full recovery. The record itself oozes fun and good times, which is what Kathy’s music has always been about. After growing up on a steady diet of everything from Indian and western classical music, through to disco, hip hop, reggae, 1980s electronic pop and even heavy metal, Rajesh Deshpande first became involved with electronic dance music in the late 1990s. Initially gravitating towards the intense rhythms and chest-pounding basslines of jungle and drum and bass, his first forays into music production were made alongside his brother. Releasing and touring under the Vice Versa' moniker and thanks to the support from local Sydney DJs and underground radio stations, the duo managed to catch the attention of legendary drum and bass figures LTJ Bukem and Conrad. This led to a string of high profile releases on Bukem's seminal label 'Good Looking Records' (amongst others), as well as residencies in most of Sydney's major dance music venues. After a hiatus, Rajesh has rediscovered his love for music production and DJing in recent years. Always open-minded and keen to explore new territory, he found a new muse and appreciation for the moods and grooves of house music. The resulting 'Miraj (AU)' project has been met with solid support from taste-making underground artists and DJs within Australia and across the world. With releases on several labels including Melbourne's very own Valiant Records, Celestial Recordings (UK), EmbarrassedArts (UK) and Expmental (France) as well as regular appearances on playlists from the likes of Dilby (Poker Flat, 8bit, Crosstown Rebels), Graziano Raffa (Sudbeat), Marsh (Anjunadeep), Robyn Balliet, Gorge, and Steve Kelley, Rajesh continues to forge ahead with his own interpretation of the deep house genre.
