Exclusive: Jamaimoi - Hardcore Definition (Matthieu Faubourg Remix)

Enjoying the Portuguese lifestyle Parisian artist Jamaimoi traded the French metropolis for a life in Lisbon, which climate- and geographic-induced supports his preferences of surfing, producing and playing music on the local beaches as well as wine-bars. The latest results of Jamaimoi's Portuguese adventure called Frenchghettotouch can be found on barbecue and includes remixes from Selfhood and Matthieu Faubourg. The latter took on remix duties for Hardcore Defintion and delivers a remix as smooth as sunny as perfect as Jamaimoi himself would have done it under Lisbon sun. However the Vienna-citizen added his trademark sound, namely a rather housey bass line to the track, and reworks the Jamaimoi's vocal sample of Hardcore Definition to make it fit into his own sound spectrum and make it an element of the track itself rather than a standing out vocal that's put over an instrumental. The result is a well-defined and smooth House track, whose intriguing dreaminess – evoked by the reworked vocal – makes one hope for better days, may that on a Lisbon beach or in Vienna.

Jamamoi's EP Frenchghettotouch will be released on barbecue on March 26th, 2021.

Hoshina Anniversary - Gekokujo [CLIPP201]

Following two striking EPs and a full length album through Lovefingers' excellent ESP Institute label, techno innovator Hoshina Anniversary arrives on clipp.art with the intensely adventurous “Gekokujo”. A brief debrief of the Tokyo-based DJ & producer shows him turning out fascinating music for over a decade, journeying through abstract techno, experimental deep house and drone-core. Sonic voyages that always explore the boundaries of the Japanese musical scale, with more than a few bangers as a result.

Gekokujo the term itself roughly translates to "the low overcomes the high" and the three movements of the release itself create a swirling cauldron of contrasts. Gekokujo and Gekokujo II find Hoshina Anniversary at home with his self-styled 'watechno' sound - infusing electronic fundamentals with jazz sensibilities and subtle Japanese aesthetics. Dueling tracks laden with audio contrast, meandering crunchy stabs, wilding out LFO’s, clashing percussive time signatures, rising arpeggiated motifs and dystopian breakdowns, all stepped against clanging 4/4 high hats. Kaguya Hime (either influenced by the titular character from Studio Ghibli film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya or 10th century Japanese folklore monogatari The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter) pits wigged out circular synth sonics against a bubbling acid-y bassline before giving way to straight up Herbie Hancock expressionism. As we start to close the chapter on another year of ups and downs inside the simulacrum, we face the challenges of discerning our own groove from the melee, wondering which patterns will repeat in 2022. The low overcomes the high, only to be replaced by the low.. the cycle continues.

Dutch producer POLEJAM kicks off 2019 with his debut EP on Boston, Massachusetts label, hadtodoit records. This vinyl-only label with previous releases from Lo-Fi house staples, Slim Hustla & DOS, continues their hazy & nostalgia inducing sound with their third release from POLEJAM.  Lead track, ‘Regular’, warms you up with a steady 4 to the floor beat, melodic synth loop and hypnotizing vocal sample, giving it a crisp and groovy feel. The third track ‘LES’ has a 90’s sitcom theme song vibe. As you reminisce about the 90’s with its emotional piano & guitar riff loop, POLEJAM shows off his sense of rhythm with an afro percussion breakdown towards the end of the track. Feature track, ‘Back When’ takes you back to simpler times of getting faded and skateboarding with your friends till the late night hours. The pulsating synth loop and punchy bassline give you a sense of time travel. Accompanied by various synth percussions ‘Back When’ has a nice groove helping you navigate through your flashback to those simple and great times.
