After a year-long break, LionDub45 returns with a stellar new release from Brooklyn based producer Ticklah featuring stand-out vocals from Jamaica’s Courtney John. Both artists should need no introduction - as a founding member of the Dap Kings, Antibalas, and the Easy Star All-Stars, Victor Axelrod spreads his work across hip hop, funk, soul, and African rhythms, working with artists like Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse and Estelle, but his more rootical vibrations are saved for his Ticklah productions. Courtney John is a celebrated Jamaican vocalist who has worked extensively with Sly & Robbie on their Silent River label and the UK based Peckings camp.  Courtney's sweet falsetto style evokes the classic era of lover’s rock and early dancehall. It’s easy to hear Axelrod’s funk roots in the guitar and organ licks on the vocal version of “Born to Fly”, and the busy production is filled out by a precision guitar skank, bubbling bass, and a spare percussion palette while maintaining a vintage roots feel. Courtney chants his lover’s song high over the rest with the poetry and clarity that has earned him his fame. On the dub, a liquid bass leads the drastically reduced rhythm as expert echo treatments of the drums and pads propel the deep, heads-down groove. Ticklah and Courtney John provide two perfect sides for lovers of classic roots reggae and dub with a strictly conscious and positive message. Crafted under the meticulous eye of black-belt reggae mastermind/producer Victor Axelrod (AKA Ticklah), Nothing More to Say is a rocksteady masterpiece the likes of which has not reared it’s head since the golden era of Studio One.  However, you’ll find no imitation here - none of the faux-jamaican cliches of lesser reggae bands.  Like all things Daptone, this record is above all soulful and honest. With the exception of two soul covers (both from the Daptone catalog: Bob & Gene’s "Gotta Find a Way” and Saun and Starr’s “Gonna Make Time”,) the record is populated by original compositions of the highest order.  They are simply great songs, and though their treatment here is masterful, each one of them has the melodic and lyrical substance to hold it’s own in any genre. “Till Then” invokes the coquettish hyper-rhymes of top-form Smokey Robinson, while “Hey Brother” sounds like it fell off the desk of Gamble and Huff, and “Purple” defies any comparison at all.  From the first cracking snares of “All My Tears” through the final pulsing echoes of “Dispute,” the murderous rhythms of Rich Terrana (drums,) and brothers Preet and Chuck Patel (bass and piano, respectively) can be heard chunking mercilessly towards oblivion as Dan Klein pours his endearing poetry over over the top like some other-worldy falsetto potion. The combination is a sound birthday-suit raw, mesmerizing, infectious, and above all, lovely. This record will long be treasured by lovers of reggae, lovers of soul and lovers of love.

Producer Victor “Ticklah” Axelrod is back with another supple Reggae delight. After the success of The Inversions' last collaboration with Bob & Gene, Axelrod once again takes a seat in the Producer’s chair, this time with a tune a little deeper in the catalogue. Originally tweezed from the beautiful MO DO tape boondoggle, back in ‘05 - ‘06, this single has been a long-time favorite of the Daptone family.

One night in 1971, frustrated by their lack of the success, Bobby Nunn and Gene Coplin sat in the basement of 50 Orange Street and put together a record expressing said frustration. Equipped with only a guitar, bass, and piano - no drums (though you don’t even notice) - the two crafted an immaculate slice of Soul, aptly titled “It’s Not What You Know (It’s Who You Know)”. Fast forward 46 years, and now accompanied by the rocksteady rhythms of The Inversions - the vocal stylings and poignant lyrics are reborn, sounding as fresh today as it did when it was crafted down in that magical basement. The VERSION flip is a delay laden masterpiece produced and arranged by Axelrod. A must for fans of Dub and Reggae alike. A truly gorgeous record!
