The Meltdown. It’s a bold, brassy, twangy steam train of bumping backbeats and swinging shuffles. Then there’s that voice. Sweet as honey. The voice is soul, but it’s country too and something else indefinable; like you heard it before but don’t know where… Introducing Better Days, The Meltdown’s first release on HopeStreet Recordings.

There’s a fair chance you haven’t heard that voice before, because for the last few years Simon Burke has been flying small planes out of small airfields in the dusty backcountry and taking refuge from the hustle and grind of the music business to raise a young family. The time off has been fruitful. A lifetime of writing and experience is condensed into a golden set of songs and a killer new band, The Meltdown, which Simon formed in collaboration with saxophonist and arranger Lachlan McLean. Great vibe, great players, great sound, but it’s the songs that are king here.

There are a lot of soul revival bands around, but the Meltdown’s angle is different  – Simon and Lachlan are both pretty country and The Meltdown has more than a bit of that Ray Charles country via gospel thing, and a taste of dirty blues in it too. Echoes of towns like Euroa and Avenel, where the boys blew in from, or just artistic license? Either way, if there’s one thing that soul and country can both do for you, it’s songs about heartbreak, so here’s some rippers. Ladies and gentlemen, let us introduce to you the inimitable voice and songwriting of Mr Simon Burke. And yes, in advance, you’re welcome.

I had recently adopted a rescue kitten, Zoe, whose anxieties (and striking resemblance to a fruit bat) sparked a lyrical conversation concerning social burdens and a lack of inclusiveness.  We’d been messing around with the drum beat for a while and created our chord changes by adding simple bass pulses from an old Korg MS-10. Having been one of his biggest festival tunes in the summer of 2014, the Luxxury mix of Greg Wilson’s 'Summer Came My Way' - which originally surfaced on last year’s 'Schooled In The Classics' 12” - was put on the back burner throughout the winter in readiness for a full 2015 release. Juxtaposed by Walter Ego’s equally sublime take on the track, the release marks the first of eight records to be issued over the summer months.

Sometimes composition is a long and arduous process, other times a song arrives fully formed. The latter was the case for Greg when he imagined 'Summer Came My Way' as a vehicle for hitherto unknown vocal forces of nature, The Reynolds - twins Katherine and the song’s lead singer Carmel - who, by beautiful serendipity happened to live within a mile of Greg’s Merseyside home.

Bursting out of LA with a lavish twelve-part re-edit series last year, Luxxury’s brand of hazy, slo-mo reworks - a West Coast Balaeric fusion - has catapulted him onto the world stage. Opening his mammoth eight- hour Berghain set in 2013 with Luxxury’s 'Hotel California' rework, Greg helped bring his Los Angeles vibes to wider attention, bolstered by his subsequent support of other reworks; 'Night Fever' and 'Riders On The Storm'.

A victim of his own success, 'Hotel California' gained Luxxury a little too much notoriety and, after a Wall Street Journal interview began circulating, Warner came down on him like a ton of bricks on finding out he’d used The Eagles’ multitracks. All was resolved however and he’s currently recording his forthcoming album, with great things expected for 2015 and beyond. The Luxxury approach perfectly fitted Greg’s vision of the song and the result is a glorious nine-minute epic, just in time for the summer.

With releases on the legendary Ninja Tune, San Francisco’s murky Symbols and Kerri Chandler’s jackin’ MadTech, Walter Ego’s appeal stretches across the board; from forward thinking house to rough and ready grime. Having got to know the Sheffield musician during recent years, Greg was impressed by what he heard, especially an as yet unreleased project he was working on in collaboration with London singer, Obenewa. Inviting him to remix the track, Walter returned an ethereal yet mechanical take on 'Summer Came My Way', his delicately decaying synths and cold hydraulic rhythm giving the track a brooding quality and placing The Reynolds in an entirely new context.

The Cactus Channel and Chet Faker announce a 7inch two-track recording out September 18.

Funk/soul band, The Cactus Channel, have collaborated with ARIA Award winner Chet Faker for two tracks, ‘Kill the Doubt’ and ‘Sleeping Alone’ on a 7inch set for release via HopeStreet Recordings.

The recording, two years in the making, is a fine example of the depth of Melbourne’s music scene. It features Chet Faker’s seasoned songwriting with The Cactus Channel’s ear for musical instrumentation, resulting in a dose of classic soul and funk seen through a uniquely Melbourne perspective.

We love Martin Atjazz's work on both his label and productions so when we saw he'd offered up three remixes of the new single, we were overjoyed. 

Now you can check out his 'Stay Tuned Remix' and it's a beautiful flurry of instruments consisting of delicate strings, soothing horns and graceful percussion.

Khruangbin is a three-piece band from Texas, formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Johnson on drums. Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - Khruangbin is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock cool. Khruangbin's exotic, individual sound is captured at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside where their first rehearsals took place. Debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is scheduled for release at the end of this year.

Sometimes it takes a few bumps to find the right direction; often it involves experience, guts and self-belief to trust yourself and venture from one to find another. The Milk are a band that believe with utter conviction that they've now found their way.

 Fuelled by a rediscovery of the music and artists that originally inspired their formation, the four walls of their studio were ablaze  with a soundtrack of Bill Withers, Isaac Hayes and the Isley Brothers throughout the songwriting process for their new album.   From the swagger of symphonic opener ‘ Wanderlust’  to heartfelt ballad ‘ Lose That Way’  to the thunderous blues of the closing title track; The Milk’ s confidence in these songs and their execution is clearly audible. Captured in a tireless outburst of creativity at the end of 2014, ‘ Favourite Worry’  is The Milk at their soulful, honest and engaging best. 

“‘ Favourite Worry’  is born from the difficulties that everyone feels as they move through life, the dreams that falter, the friendships that struggle or the love that falls away. Each song is born from this very personal atonement that each of us has had to reconcile ourselves with. It was vital that the record demonstrate the many years we have played together, the blood harmonies and sibling rhythm section. Just as importantly the need for the sound to reach deep into the guts of the listener, as so many of our influences do, was always at the forefront.”- Dan Legresley

Eager  to  share  their  new  songs, ‘ Deliver  Me’   was  released  as  a    limited  7”  single  in  November  2014  - finding its  way  onto  the  playlists  of  BBC  6  Music’ s  Lauren  Laverne,  Huey  Morgan  and Gilles  Peterson  - while The Milk’ s dedicated fans packed out Tufnell Park’ s The Dome for the band’ s triumphant live return. The band unveiled their new songs in full for the first time to an intimate sold out show at Hackney’ s Oslo in July to  coincide  with the  release  of  single ‘ No  Interruptions’ ,  one  of  the first  songs  written for  'Favourite Worry'. 

“‘ No Interruptions’  provided us with a tone, musical flavour and a lyrical yardstick to which all of the other tracks on the album had to have in common. The song is about defiance and retribution, emotions that were common in the studio at that time.”- Rick Nunn

The  Bees'  Paul  Butler,  who  proved  his  production  mastery  with  Michael  Kiwanuka's  Mercury  Prize nominated debut, invited the band to record at Chale Abbey, a medieval barn on the Isle of Wight. Guided by Butler, the sessions captured the genuine version of The Milk: the sounds and honesty of soul.
