Through a misty, nostalgic lens of long days and nights lost in front of sound systems, Soundbwoy Killah delivers his much anticipated debut album to Sneaker Social Club. True to previous drops on this and other labels, this is rave romanticism with a bite, as much viewing the good old days with a wry smile as longing for their return. Just listen to the opening strains of “Escape Velocity,” as the MC manages a sticky situation and tries to keep cool while sending the crowd on their way “in an orderly fashion.” 

As much as hardcore, jungle, acid, techno and house inform Halcyon Daze, the sonic signifiers of that ‘golden era’ of rave culture are bedded in a poignant, reflective shroud. From lingering pads to distant, reverb drenched vocal snatches, a hint of melancholy hovers over these scattered but vivid memory triggers. Reese bass has never reverberated so deep, sirens never sounded so lost at sea. 

The real art in Soundbwoy Killah’s craft lies in the juxtaposition between these languid, introspective elements and bright, sharply rendered arcs of sound that bring the music right into the foreground. This isn’t a pure exercise in nostalgia – stripped of their aggressive armour plating, a lot of these familiar elements take on a new expressive identity. Whether it’s the strafing arps in “Tom Loves To Rave,” or softly nudging the rolling breaks of “Under The Influence” into a downtempo, chill-out room headspace, Halcyon Daze proves how much mileage there still is in these battle-scarred sonic tools. 

It’s not all one-dimensionally downcast either – “Heartbeats” is a rude n’ ruff celebration of amen choppage, while “Wanna Hold U” channels the ghost of UK garage with one eye cast back to its US house roots. “All Night Long” finishes the record on a charging high, all tightly clipped tech step beats and bright synths that cast their gaze ahead with optimism. The themes of lost love and fuzzy memories echo throughout Halcyon Daze, but rather than wallowing in the past, this open-ended finishing move springs forward with purpose. One gets the feeling there’s plenty more to come from Soundbwoy Killah.

Swedish born Bobo & Co-founder of Bars of Beats, alongside his childhood friend Lars Tallberg, marks the label’s first release come this September.

Dreamy synths zig zag atop a pounding kick, lush percussive pads echo in and out and euphoric atmospherics underpin. A genre-defying sound and an approach mirrored by the diversity of tracks on this EP.

The twelfth instalment of the Reference Mark Mix Series. Past, present and future friends of the label are given the chance to reference the sounds that define them.

After all the stresses of lockdown this year we all need a break; and when I say break, I mean a breakbeat. There is no one more equipped to supply this than Oak Watson. As co-founder of the fledgling Leeds based party Electric Boogaloo, he has hosted some of the scenes most legendary acts at one of the most iconic venues in the UK: Frazer Ray and Overmono at Wire. No doubt those acts and others witnessed pre-lockdown influenced the sounds presented in this mix. Peak time breaks are the mainstay, with some darker off-kilter techno reflecting on the ghosts of raves past and looking forward to the ghosts of raves future.

You’ve entered uncharted territory, forgotten your purpose, as you float through this empty space, unaware, but unbothered as to where you’re going, or you’re coming from. Stuck in a paradox, where you want to let go totally and drift forever, let the darkness swallow you whole, and stop the pain, stop the hurt of wanting to let go, but at the same time, still wanting to hold on, still trying to regain your course. Trying to hold on because you are afraid of realising everything you have lost.

I'm Really Good (At Being Sad)

Nüwa is a London based DJ duo, formed of members
Malaika Shaw and Mia Lily Johnson. Their music sees a
mergence of many genres including Trance, Acid, Garage
and Minimal Techno. Both members have a long history
of music making in production and songwriting, having
songs played and BBC Radio 1 and mix’s featured on
Rinse Fm, Foundation FM Bamamii and Threads Radio.
Nüwa can be found playing many underground venues
around London such as Canavan’s, Four Quarters and
The Cause. Meraki, an open decks night focused on
female creatives saw the formation of the duo where they
played a handful of their debut performances.
One of their most recent performances was supporting
Jonny Aux from Paranoid London in 2020 at The Cause.
In 2021 we can expect more live and radio shows from them.

To sign off our mix series for the year, we couldn’t be more excited to introduce Swamp81-dweller and Rinse resident, the multitalented DJ and producer, Patrice. Snowy, as well as a standout b2b with Interplanetary Criminal for Limbo Radio, the CV on this guy is endless.

Snowy, back in October 2019, and more recently, on big-beat duty for ‘Vanish’ for Faultsz, and on D.I.T.B with Big Kani, which were released in June and early December respectively. Just to top it all off, Patrice runs Emib clothing, hot off a collab with Swamp81, pictured above.
