Comptine d'un autre été (Piano)

This starts off low so don't turn it up!
On my way to Wellington I stopped in overnight at Pureora and recorded the sounds of the forest from the 12m high tower. I'm not very good with heights so found it a bit of a mission to climb.. Once again, the calmness of the forest made recording  a challenge as the loudest Kaka calls were only around 35dBSPL and that is very quiet!

A series of recordings made on the occasion of the 2015 Soundcamp for the 24 hour Reveil global dawn chorus braodcast. Our Soundcamp was coordinated by Dawn Scarfe and Veljo Runnel and included guests from the Active Crossover residency. Special thanks to the Palupõhja Nature School for hosting us. Palupõhja is a small village on the Emajõgi river in the center of the Alam-Pedja nature reserve.

Biophony

A dense, diverse and constantly evolving city within Detroit, MI, Hamtramck is also a rich tapestry of sound. The third and final chapter in this series of sound maps, "Spirits..." is a unique 9 minute cauldron of ambiance sourced from a very unique post-Industrial neighborhood. Sacred religious tones and the bustle of an urban landscape dominate the atmosphere, but allow more nuanced sources like birds, small children and distant trains to color the mix.  

Unlike the first parts from this sound map series, "Spirits of the Old World" is not designed as a realistic walk through a changing location, but moreso a surreal sound collage you might have as a dream of a real place. This particular dream sets you in one of Hamtramck's myriad of narrow alleyways, walking alone at a hazy time that could either be early morning or late afternoon. A child calls out from a balcony and you find a large gathering of pigeons high up on power lines. One side of the alley meets a park, where fields of cicadas are beginning to stir. Further through the park, a train can be heard approaching. An Islamic call to prayer carries across the whole neighborhood, echoing into a wall of church bells.  In an instant, the swarm of birds disappears over the horizon, where more prayers and bells emerge in differing forms. The dream winds to a close atop the I-75 freeway overpass, surveying ten lanes of traffic below.

All sounds recorded and edited by R.J. Stefanski in 2015 on Tascam DR-07 and Crown SASS Stereo Mic. Edited and maintained at pristine 96 kHz 24 bit WAV audio. Enjoy on good headphones.

Promenada Staromiejska Part 2

Mars 2019, 7 paires d’oreilles accompagnées par Félix Blume traversent Arles dans tous les sens en quête de sonorités remarquables. Ils s’enquièrent : “Y’a quelqu’un ?”. Les réponses fusent, entre gare et port, cité et Camargue, rues et places, édifices et parkings... Arles est là, palpable et sensorielle, antique et contemporaine, à la croisée de nos chemins.

Un oeuvre collective résalisée durant le stage "Field-Recording 2019” (Phonurgia) avec Basile Koechlin, Denis Muzet, Iga Vandenhove, Julie Deck Marsault, Manuel Marcos, Noémie Fargier et Vanessa Vudo.

Aroha Island Crickets

Many native birds thrive on the island including kiwi, tui, korimako (bellbird), both red and yellow crowned kakariki (parakeets), pateke (brown teal), kereru (wood pigeon), miromiro (tomtit), titipounamu (rifleman), riroriro (grey warbler), korora (blue penguin), popokatea (whitehead) and karuhiruhi (pied shag). 

With over 40 species of birds permanently or seasonally present, two bat species and 14 species of reptiles, the island supports the most diverse assemblage of native fauna of any island in the country. Because of this, and the fact the island is free of most introduced predators, it is considered to be one of the most important reserves of its kind in the world.

Puketi Forest is an ancient kauri (Agathis australis) forest located in Northland near Kerikeri. With the Omahuta Forest it forms one of the largest contiguous tracts of native forest in Northland.
It has 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres) of kauri, podocarp and hardwood trees and a rich diversity including hundreds of recorded species of plants, some of which are found nowhere else in the world.  The short Manginangina Kauri Walk follows a boardwalk that winds through a mature stand of kauri and swamp forest. It’s a track that is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
