Little Dipper existed between 1997 and 2009 and was the baby of singer/songwriter Robot Alien (or Rob Allen to his friends), who was also in short lived Manchester band Pet Ghosts (<a href="http://soundcloud.com/petghosts" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">petghosts</a>) and now plays as http://soundcloud.com/robotalienuk Changes in sound, style and members ensued throughout the 90's and 00's but the one thing that remained a constant was that of Rob's songwriting. Rob made tape after tape (and in 2001 finally took on the CD!) and gave them away to anyone who would listen, releasing the records on his own label Menk Records. In 2005 Little Dipper was just Rob on his own with drum machines and keyboards and stuff and signed to Manchester label Crunch Records who gave him £2000 to make a 'proper' record. Rob spent all the money on weed, rent, beer and cigarettes but still managed to make the record 'Ceefax@3:00 A.M' with friend and engineer Tom Lindsey in his garage in the hot summer of '05. The record never got released although a single, 'Friendly People' did in January 2007. After this Rob never heard from the label again. Frustrated and out of weed, Rob formed a new Little Dipper as a three piece band with Gaz Bennett on Drums and Phil Smith on Bass. Though short lived the band recorded an E.P 'They Lie And They Lie And It's Beautiful' in 2008 and an album 'Never Say Never... But Yeh, Me Neither' in 2009. Songs from 'Never Say Never...' and one unreleased song 'Read It For Yourself' we're also used on a split E.P with Birmingham's Shana Tova. Little Dipper were lucky enough to work with some great engineers/producers/bands (Sunset Cinema Club, Shana Tova, Johnny Foreigner) and awesome artists such as Lewes Herriot and Keven Robinson through the years, but although championed by radio DJ's Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson, Little Dipper never quite made the impact on the music world Rob had hoped and in 2009 after a great last show with fellow soundclouder The Always Unprofessional, Little Dipper was put to bed for good.
