Coldwave / darkwave debut album by San Fransisco based producer Gabriel Ramos.

While the band has gone through a few lineup changes Ssleeping Desiress has essentially remained the brainchild of Gabriel Ramos, who is now the sole member. Ssleeping Desiress is certainly a gem in the electronic underground, the album runs along the boundaries between minimal synth, coldwave, and electro with lyrical themes being gentrification, coping with death, artistic drive and confusion and the ephemeral nature of relationships.

The only Ssleeping Desiress release so far was the great A Voice / Sister 7inch on the FlexiWave label in 2012. They also appeared on numerous new new wave compilations in the last couple of years. The self-titled album presented here takes the project to the next level. Kicking off with an echoing voice over repetitive drums and outbursts of synths & guitars, slowly moving towards a more darkwave sound on the second half of the album.

Gabriel Ramon started making solo recordings while living in Portland, Oregon around 2005. Being inspired by the culminating factors of the DIY drive of the city, hosting live shows at his house, which frequently would host friends' bands from San Francisco and his growing fascination and voracious consumption of music: "I can really trace it to the first time Spector Protector played at my house and getting a tape afterwards from one of the two members, Eric Davis. That and being freshly exposed to groups like Suicide and Arthur Russell was very inspirational to begin recording music on my own, though it is something I had done fairly aimlessly since high school. I make an effort and try and change my process as much as I can (usually through collaboration) and vary the instrumentation. I try and incorporate a late 70s punk vibe, a marriage of dub and krautrock repetition and cavernous space. Definitely not always successful but that is what is usually running through my head when I create music for this band."

Aaron Dilloway was a founding member of formidable trip metal gods Wolf Eyes. Since he left that band now two decades ago, he’s delicately extended his exploration of tape manipulations and found sound appropriation, simultaneously bringing warmth and acidity, high-end assault and dreamy dislocation in a way that could be said to unwittingly form a bridge between Robert Ashley and hauntology.

A serial collaborator, he’s also made great records in cahoots with C. Spencer Yeh and many more and been compared to Maryanne Amacher and Nurse With Wound. Currently based in Oberlin, Ohio, from where he runs the Hanson Records label and mailorder.

Spider Taylor crawls over to Dark Entries with Surge Studio Music, an album of archival gay pornographic soundtracks. James Allan Taylor was born into a working-class family in Los Angeles in 1951. Nicknamed “Spider” by his father due to his frantic energy, Taylor was a natural-born guitarist, gifted with perfect pitch and a voracious musical appetite. Throughout the 70s, he expanded his musical repertoire, playing in bands ranging from country to post-punk, like his outfit Red Wedding, while always looking for new sounds and styles to explore. During this period, Taylor also partnered with his soulmate and musical collaborator, Michael Ely. They were part of a wave of bold, young, gay couples living openly together in the years immediately following the Stonewall Riots. In the early 80s, while working at the West Hollywood gay sex club Basic Plumbing, Taylor met Al Parker, the legendary pornographic actor and director, who recruited Taylor to produce the soundtrack for a film he was working on. Parker’s partnership with Steve Scott running Surge Studios produced some of the most popular all-male films of the era. Spider’s music was a natural fit for Surge, and throughout 1985 and 1986, he composed the soundtracks for five films produced by the iconic studio. Assisted by engineer Steve Conrad and armed with a drum machine and some synths, Spider’s compositions for film veer from the expansive, reverb-drenched “Rainforest” to the Miami Vice-esque chugger “Tech.” While Spider thought of this work as little more than a gig, tangential to his real craft, enthusiasts of VHS-era nostalgia and vintage erotica will be brought to bliss. Surge Studio Music will be available on both LP and CD, the latter of which includes a 20-minute version of “Strange Places…Strange Things!” as a bonus track. The album’s cover art was designed by Gwenael Rattke, and features stylish images from Surge Studios releases. Also included is an insert featuring liner notes by Will Lewis, a longtime friend of Spider. The music is released from Spider’s estate by Michael Ely, Spider’s partner of 43 years. The shadow of AIDS lingered over Surge; Steve Scott passed from AIDS-related illness in 1987, and Al Parker succumbed in 1992. In 2014, when it became legal for same-sex couples to marry in Arizona, Spider and Michael finally became wedded. Spider would pass away from liver cancer six months later.

Dark Entries is honored to re-issue the debut cassette by British duo Nagamatzu for the first time ever on vinyl. Expanded with five bonus tracks, “Shatter Days” is a collection of nine songs recorded between 1983 and 1988. Featuring Andrew Lagowski (SETI, Legion, Terror Against Terror) on synths, guitar, and programming and Stephen Jarvis (Pure Motorised Instinct, Terraform) on synths and bass  with Andrew Fleck (synths,  occasional vocals). 
Nagamatzu self-released their debut cassette "Shatter Days" in 1983 after messing around with old tape machines, drum boxes and effects. They cite their early influences as SPK, Cabaret Voltaire and Joy Division. All the songs were recorded onto a TEAC reel to reel in the dining room at Andrew's parents' house.  Some of the backing rhythms and sequencers were recorded first and then the band played along live during overdubs. These instrumentals combine stuttering bass, guitar bursts and funeral keyboards draped over a dragging drum machine beat, calling to mind Clock DVA, early New Order or Cocteau Twins. Their sound is full of complex rhythm patterns and dark electronics.
On the flip side of this reissue are five tracks featuring contributions to international compilations ("If God Had Meant Us To Dance He’d Have Given Us Legs,” “Three Minute Symphony,”  Life At The Top" and "Total Recess 3") plus a previously unreleased song.  All songs have been remastered from the original tapes for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in jacket silver and black offset printed jacket featuring the Nagamatzu symbol from the "Shatter Days" cassette.  Each LP includes a 8-page booklet full of photos, reviews and an interview with the band from 1983. Finally rescued from the UK D.I.Y. cassette underground and restored, "Shatter Days" presents a band at their productive beginnings.
