Kate's debut EP 'Sprint' celebrates and cements a genre-fluid ethos with four tracks where texture and atmosphere take precedence over convention.

The EP’s opener ‘Harpan’ is a bold ambient statement, brimming with otherworldly, bell-like piano riffs, humming pads, long, gliding sweeps and sparse percussion. Written in the stillness of winter, ‘Harpan’ captures the quiet beauty of solitude and anonymity amid movement. The title track ‘Sprint’ shifts gears. A synth-surge launches the track before a slow release into breakdowns, trading the opener’s introspection for unbridled motion. ‘Hoover’ deepens the momentum with lurching rhythms, a drunken bassline, and tangled, footwork-inspired snares. Finally, ‘The Embrace’ delivers the most club-focused moment, rattling congas and panning djembes ride a punchy kick, giving way to a dramatic, techno-infused finale.

Intentional in its construction and unbound by genre, Sprint marks a powerful new chapter for Kate Miller.

Legendary dub techno artist Paul St. Hilaire (AKA Tikiman) announces new collaborative album, marking 10 years of Kynant Records. 

Building on the success of Paul St. Hilaire’s landmark solo album for Kynant in 2023, w/ The Producers switches up the formula to pair St. Hilaire with a different producer on each track. Referencing fellow dub techno pioneers Mark Ernestus & Moritz von Oswald’s acclaimed album w/ The Artists as Rhythm & Sound, St. Hilaire flips the concept to feature as the lone vocalist.

Over the album’s nine tracks, St. Hilaire offers a range of conscious song-writing and headtop musings, such as the spoken-word dread of “What’s This” or the sparse call-to-action of “Send Them On”. w/ The Producers is yet another essential record in St. Hilaire’s unmatched discography.

The album marks 10 years of Kynant Records, with label owner Richard Akingbehin curating an eclectic but sonically connected group of producers. These include luminaries such as Digital Mystikz boss and dubstep trailblazer Mala, or the elusive Chain Reaction artist Shinichi Atobe. They sit alongside some of the most exciting names in recent electronic music - Batu, Gavsborg, Azu Tiwaline, Priori, Cousin, Russell E.L. Butler, Aurora Halal and DJ G - all of whom bring different elements of dub techno into their productions.

w/ The Producers finds Kynant Records bridging the original voice of dub techno with the genre’s new wave. It’s a statement of intent from the label, which began 10 years ago with deep, hypnotic techno and has veered gradually towards more dubwise sounds.

"little sounds in huge expansive spaces"

This mix was my musical extrapolation of this quote. As I put together the tracks in the mix, the idea of small sounds in big spaces became more metaphysical, as a metaphor for memory and nostalgia. Small, seemingly insignificant events in our past can expand in significance over time, informed by our experiences later on in life, and with our emotions acting as a tool of reverberation, extending their presence in our lives far past their time of occurrence. What begun as a process of selecting tracks that quite literally feature "small sounds in big spaces" soon morphed into a dig into my distant past, to nearly 20 years ago when I first started learning to DJ. I pulled from the mnml tracks that had an important influence on my formative years, their impact can still be heard in the contemporary tracks I play today, all of them bouncing next to each other in this nearly 2hr musical collage.

A Tokyo-based DJ and producer, mainly working with sounds collected through field recordings, which are then edited and crafted into musical pieces. In addition to personal works, I also compose background music for theaters and films. I focus environmental sounds can evoke fragments of memory in the listener. As a DJ, I play emotional dance tracks as base and mix sounds of festivals and traditional performing arts.

A Gethsémani ‎– Âme Triste . 

Reissued for the first time in vinyl.

Self-released in 1987, 'Ame Triste' was officially the first production of Bernard Odot aka A Gethsemani.

This obscure cassette was stuck in the past for many years until we had the chance to get in touch with it. Influenced by new wave & synth-pop, Bernard made a unique and powerfull piece of art by his own hands using a DX7 Yamaha and his own material. 
The track 'Cheree', sung by his old friend Isabelle Morival is an hommage to crucial experimental Alan Vega's band Suicide.

"La musique était une des passions de mon père - avec la littérature -, modestement assouvie par
l’usage d’un simple tourne-disque. Jusqu’à son décès, à mes neuf ans, la « grande » musique baignait
les fins de journées, de semaines et les vacances. La musique, elle, est restée, comme un aliment, un
moyen d’existence, nécessaire, exigible, nourrissant des curiosités indistinctes.
Quelques années plus tard - j’étais au lycée -, l’acquisition d’un DX7 Yamaha a remplacé mon premier
clavier, un Casiotone 7000 qui disposait d’une mémoire à piste multiple avec laquelle je fourbissais
des armes d’autodidacte. Avec trois amis ardennais nous avions formé un groupe de musique
électronique industrielle, Anackarsis Section (un de nos titres, Étape Mortelle, figurait d’ailleurs en
clôture d’Âme Triste sur la cassette originale). En même temps, je commençais d’enregistrer seul,
avec un quatre-piste cassette prêté par la radio-libre locale, des morceaux plus mélodiques, aux
ambiances sombres. La voix, très présente, était une texture de la matière sonore, les textes
n’avaient guère d’importance.
Dominique Diebold, fondateur du label rémois AYAA, m’a donné l’idée et l’envie de faire des
cassettes comme on ferait des disques, avec un contenu choisi, une pochette, un support diffusable.
La première chose à faire étant de choisir un nom, ma curiosité pour la religion et mon goût pour
l’esthétique gothique m’a guidé vers À Gethsémani, un nom biblique désignant le lieu où Jésus prie
avant son arrestation ; un moment évoquant à la fois la menace et l’apaisement que la nuit instaure.
Avec Isabelle Morival va naître l’idée d’un duo musical et d’une certaine répartition voix/instruments,

Rotterdam is miserably cold and rainy. Plagued by gentrification and technological unemployment, the harbor city is slowly turning into a desolate, mechanized metropolis. 

Secretly tucked away on the outskirts, if you know where to look, there are a few remaining military bunkers. This is where the city’s youth go sporadically to relieve their anger and grief. During these nights, they tirelessly rage to the dystopian sound of Gamma Intel’s slow-burning electro and hypno-acid, before returning to the struggles of their daily lives.

Lhasa is the brainchild of Alain Raes from Siegen, Germany. As a teenager he was inspired by Tubeway Army's “Are Friends Electric” and Art Of Noise’s “Beatbox”. In 1985 he began collecting analog equipment (Prophet-5; Oberheim OB-X; Linn LM-1) as digital synthesizers had started to become more popular. In 1986, New Beat was born in Belgium. Dancers tapped into the darker side of synth pop, and DJs would play 45 rpm records at 33 with the pitch control set to +8. Alain was playing in New Wave bands and had started production work and synth programming for other acts.
In 1988 he self-released the debut Lhasa single ‘Acetabularia’ / ‘Acetatechno’, with help from Kris Tremmery on vocals and concept. The record combined the icy melodies of Gary Numan and John Foxx with with the mechanical rhythms of Detroit techno and EBM. Thematically, both tracks revolve around the end of life on Earth, and include  samples from ‘Dr. Strangelove’. For this first time reissue, we’ve added 4 bonus tracks rescued from a 1990 recording session DAT tape. These demos show further development of the Lhasa sound with updated instruments (Roland D-20, Yamaha TX16W, Korg 707), faster tempos, and menacing proto-rave energy. All songs have been mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each copy includes an 11x11 poster with photos and liner notes by Alain.
