" I really enjoy (and miss) hanging out and going to clubs, however, I am not really a dancer myself so I don’t think I am the best person to answer this one. It might sound a bit geeky but I tend to find joy listening and immersing myself in the loud sounds and deep frequencies of the club. Having said that, dancing it’s a really intimate thing for me, I might seldomly do it but at home only. "

Alec Pace has been steadily paving his way with a plethora of varied releases on the likes of All Centre and his own Early Reflex, that tap into very complex electronic soundscapes full of raw energy. With a classical music background and a long time in punk bands, when he was younger, you can sense that blend of studied precision and no rules attitude in all his production and mixes. Our next premiere is from the lovely Mexico-based label @secuencias_temporales, with an eccentric collection of lush hypnotic electronica from talented producer @opalomusic. This particular track dances in the realms of electronica with punchy bass notes and hypnotic overlays. Another stellar release from one of our favorite labels.

Ópalo is the alias of the dj/musician and producer Alejandro Romero. 
The purpose of this name is to give a concept to the experimental, downtempo and ambient style music that the artist proposes. 

With this alias Ópalo has already released an LP on his own label 'Caracteres'. For his live performances Ópalo uses two formats, a dj set or a live set. His dj sets are known for mixing music from various eras, especially experimental concepts within downtempo. His live sets take on a rather introspective feel where the artist takes the opportunity to show his processes inside the studio when composing. 

In retrospect Ópalo is a project that proposes urban sounds, deep and human content using a futuristic language that at the same time recycles elements from the past, especially from the music of the nineties.

Dealing With Love is an album that mixes electronic, IDM and downtempo sounds. The content of the album could be considered esoteric in nature, however there are nuances that also invite to let off steam and to see things from the inside out. 

The process of the album seeks to integrate the different parts that the artist has been working with his interpersonal relationships. Most of the songs were composed in the outskirts of Quito in a community dedicated to permaculture. 

Dealing with love is an exaltation to the strong emotions that awaken both manual, intellectual and spiritual work.

Enaen is a Chicago born and Edinburgh based DJ with a love for deep techno and hardgroove. She made her Edinburgh debut in 2023 and has since then played at several clubs and radio shows across Scotland and the UK. She is now a resident at EPiKA Edinburgh since April of this year.

Oceanic makes distinctly modern house and techno with attention grabbing synths and lithe sound design. The Dutchman's production is often quirky and curious and finds him bringing plenty of subtly inventive new ideas to his grooves. They have come on the likes of Nous'klaer Audio, while last year he put out a live recording of one of his many sets at Amsterdam's De School. It was an experimental ambient mix from the club's auditorium and this week he starts in a similar fashion before getting down to his more dance floor orientated sound. 

The mix races up to speeds of 150bpm, often with hyperactive drum programming and day glo synths lighting up the airwaves. The whole thing races by like a high speed hallucination, a trip to another dimension that somehow never sounds like house, or techno, or anything in between. It is genre-fluid, thrillingly unusual music littered with alien lifeforms and cyborg funk of the highest order.

Dekmantel Podcast 260 - Oceanic

A master of kinetic percussion and low end bass weight, Hemlock, Timedance and Hessle Audio producer Ploy (@deejayploy) has long been a techno favourite. On his most recent album, Unlit Signals on L.I.E.S., however, he mixes it up much more across nomadic tracks filled with visceral energy. In fact, the record chews up and spits out influences taken from "decades of UK dance" as well as plenty of harder, more raw and noisy industrial scenes. It features eight tracks all with a darker overriding mood, as well as "dishevelled closing hours delirium applied across a spectrum of bpm." 

That is of course the case on this week's podcast, which is a slippery selection of weighty rhythmic propulsions. As they pull you up, down, forwards and back, fractured percussion peppers the groove and twisted synths weave their way in and out of the cavernous spaces left behind. Whether playing slow and sludgy bass or hard and fast techno, Ploy seems somehow able to warp space and time, and often your mind and body are left just as bent out of shape.

Here’s the recording of my Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, which I recorded at the start of 2020 and was broadcast in June. Feeling like I’d been given some big shoes to fill, I spent a couple of months planning a rambunctious, high-energy party mix that would also still be pretty ambitious in the range of styles and tempos it would cover, finally finishing it just as the first lockdowns were kicking in. Obviously, by the time it was eventually broadcast it felt a little out of step with the times. But listening back to it I still feel like it’s one of my better studio mixes, and with the holidays (and a vaccine) around the corner maybe its energy will even feel newly appropriate. So in case you missed the official broadcast – or wanted a download – here it is.

I included a handful of all-time personal favourites, and most of the tracks marked “unreleased” are presumably up on Bandcamp by now so go show the artists and labels a bit of love if you’re feeling it.
