After a remix for Dadub on Stroboscopic’s Preternity release, Rrose checks in with a full solo release through Monad XVI. This is a record half machine, half beast, at times empathetic but continuously emphatic.
Opener ‘Onceless’ is a nine-minute coalescence of the aural narrative of Apocalypse Now. Running throughout is an incessant buzzing, more helicopter and plane than the label’s favourite bees. From this mechanical source emerges an eerie tribal drumming, slowly bringing the dissonance to a chilling conclusion.
‘The Stare’ begins as optimistically as ‘Onceless’ seemed pessimistic: a beautiful bass drum induces a whirring repeat. This repeat, however, begins to suffocate, absorbing the drum in a slide towards more mechanical disorientation. Paranoid hi-hat and insistent low ends are then introduced to close.
‘Kneeling’ is an amalgam of hi-end loops, the master sampler for a 1980s ‘computer sound’ film stock. The tone is brought back from the electronic precipice by a more verdant perspective in the middle minutes, but this cannot prevent the electronic whirring from passing into final track ‘Wet Silk Will’.
‘WSW’ has a greater jut than its predecessors, breathing and striding in a human form. Yet while it pursues this more human resolve, it certainly retains the EP’s signature pursuit of determined, electronic force.

Up next on Balans is a Brazilian old school house & techno talent extraordinaire. He operates under the monniker Betek and has only one release on Black Stripe under his belt so far. This is about to change, because he will be a regular on the imprint from now on.

Hailing from beautiful Rio De Janeiro, you might not expect an artist who is dedicated to old school Roland drumcomputers and bassline machines. Betek clearly has a big love for the the EDM past, but takes it well into the new millennium with a fresh angle. 
Using the best of both worlds he delivers three original acid cuts. Both versions of ‘U Funking Confuse Me’ are firmly settled in the Chicago acid house tradition we all have come to love. Bouncing multiple 303 basslines and 707 and 808 drummachines are draped in strings and pads with beautiful melodies and textures. Wood Engraving is a fierce techno stomper, sweeping everything in it’s way with brutal acid patterns and fierce drums.

The “A” side is completed with the more hypnotic part of the EP. A deep track, dry and minimalist with the elements needed to create the mystical atmosphere which floods this reference. "Ritual III”  is absolute Energy. OVERVIEW:
After a series of prized splits and collaborations, M_REC LTD's own Max_M returns with 'Dissertation', his latest fully-fleshed solo effort.

'The Kidnapper Bell' was his last EP for M_REC LTD. The avid vinyl lover and collector has since put his "maximalist" values to work sharing wax with the likes of Fabrizio Lapiana of Attic Music, as well as with newcomers Wrong Assessment. Not one to rush things, 'Dissertation' then comes at a peak time for Max_M and M_REC LTD, representing the culmination of a ceaseless dedication to the type of stolid, hypnotic brand of techno intrinsic to both chief and label.

"Exceeding Brightness" governs the A-side with blue blips set to a progressive chugging pace, enveloped in a trademark background of fuzzy mechanical whirrs. "Architectural Lie" then opens up the B-side with a loop of warm chords that roll into a tumult of diffused hats and jangled melodies. "Scape Sequences" concludes in a subaqueous fashion; viscous, heady and stupefying.

Pulsating and ominous riffs are present from the off and when backed by throbbing kicks, demonic tones and piercing hi-hats, you've got track that punishes and much as it delights.

The mysterious ROD enterns the Balans arena with an uncompromising, abstract techno affair. Little can we tell you about this mysterious character. Only that a famous DJ from RODterdam is behind this alter ego and that he did a very well received EP on Ben Klock’s Klockworks earlier this year. 

The music coming from this persona is one hundred percent puristic, stripped down, DJ tool Techno. With a capital T you have seen that right! No nonsense hypnotism as we rarely see it nowadays. Three or four sounds per track, each pushed and stretched inside out for maximum result. These tunes are made for dark, strobe lid cellars or underground techno temples such as Berghain. 

Techno is back and this is about as abstract and underground as it gets. We look forward to release more ROD records in the future.

Balans head honcho Darko Esser is on duty for his very first EP on Balans Records. To celibrate this joyous occasion he unleashes what might be his strangest track up till date. And who is more qualified for a reinterpretation of some weirdness then underground techno-punk duo Sandwell District and Belgian’s finest techno producer Peter van Hoesen to remix? Exactly. It’s an honor to see such fine artists on the Balans board and boy, did they deliver!

The title of the original pretty much is spot on. Allthough we can imagine some might wonder if ‘totally & utterly disturbed’ would have been a better one. It’s without a doubt Darko’s most twisted and unpredictable techno tune up till date. The sequences and basslines seem out of sync, breaks appear out of nowhere and we guess every sound altering source on the synths have been utilized to make them dizzy untill they throw up. It’s like being in modulation hell.

The Dutchman asked a couple of friends for a good old fashioned total re-work. These friends happen to be some of the underground techno’s finest: Peter van Hoesen and Regis & Function a.k.a. Sandwell District. Peter’s Stretched and Pitched reinterpration does exactly as the title promises: total sound re-design. The orginal sounds are being twist and turned into psychedelic mayhem at an unsettling low tempo. Combined with his trademark bass heavy rhythmics, it’s pure and unadultared psychofunk. 

The Sandwell duo are also generous when it comes to bass antics. The slow tempo gives the low frequencies all the breathing space they need, whilst gradually and subtely unleashing dark and haunting soundscapes as the track progresses. Just when you think your are passed the abstract point of no return, there’s a nice little twist at the end. How we love these left turns & surprises. The new year couldn’t have started better. Or is it worse? You decide!

Dutch minimalists Dimi Angèlis & Jeroen Search return for their second stripped down and abstract sonic affair on BALANS Records. They were resposible for 001 of our imprint and received global critical acclaim for their fantastic effort. Recently they launched their own A&S Records, so the guys have been busy in the studio.

The fruit of 3 of their endeavours are being cut to wax and will off course also be available on digital format. The main track ‘Diepte’ is both a typical Jeroen and Dimi track, but at the same time it’s quite different from their usual approach as well. Rhythm and abstractism are still heavily present, but the tune feels more emotive and dare we say almost ‘human’.

The machines get their say on the flip through ‘Stroomstoot’ and ‘Rustpunt’, but also in these tracks, we can’t help but wonder if artificial intellegence is taking over their equipment. The Oneindig EP is without a doubt one of the warmest EP’s from the guys till date.

OVERVIEW:
Techno fans in New York and Chicago should be pretty aware of Jeff Derringer by now. Since launching Oktave in October 2009 with partner Kevin Gregor, the former indie rocker has turned a passion for deeper electronic music into a respected DJ and promoter career. But it is as a producer that Jeff has begun to earn rising recognition elsewhere—throughout the US and beyond—with his records infiltrating Europe via support from the likes of Silent Servent, Chris Leibing and Peter Van Hoesen, along with many others that have graced Oktave over the years.

A trio of Perc Trax releases saw Jeff fashion hypnotic loops into deep and darkly charged techno, culminating in the stringent artillery that landed on Speedy J’s Electric Deluxe label this summer (a collaboration between Jeff and LA protagonists Raiz). Now comes Situational Ethics, Jeff Derringer’s first full three-track EP and most serious studio statement yet. Over “Ambition”, “Compassion” and “Shame” Jeff Derringer masterfully builds tension with shamanic cyclical rhythms and punishing basslines, weaved here into potent and intoxicating concoctions from haunted beginning, viper-laden middle to heavyweight end. Electric Deluxe bedfellow Brendon Moeller then concludes the EP with a rework of “Shame” plied with signature Moeller-crafted sounds over a punchy, turbulent beat that only just about lifts Jeff Derringer’s powerful spell.


M_Rec Ltd 14 - Jeff Derringer - Situational Ethics (Incl. Brendon Moeller Remix)

Fachwerk boss and dubby techno don Mike Dehnert steps away from his usual home for a new EP on Delsin entitled ‘Umgangston’. It’s not his first time on the label following last year’s Fachwerk album, but it does see him cast his sonic net a little further afield.

‘Andruck’ swings back and forth on a squelchy synth hook as tin foil hi hats cut up long thin pads. Knocking bell sounds add plenty of silvery colours to the dubby bass below, and it’s one of the more serene and beautiful Dehnert cuts of recent times.

‘Tracer’ is much sterner, with huge Basic Channel dub waves breaking beneath scratchy synths and acid bleeps. Fizzing and fine grain like warm white noise, it’s for those more intense dancefloor moments.

‘Refillable’ finds Mike in full on rave mode with filters twisting and turning and skewing synths into weird patterns as hi hat ringlets race between sandy claps and a tortured vocal yelps out every so often. Rushy and racy, it’s underpinned with a walloping kick drum where closer ‘Umgangston’ is about knife-edge intensity, cantering kick drums and wild, freeform synth lines.

Seemingly a touch untethered from his usual basement dub techno aesthetic, Mike Dehnert might surprise you with this one.

This track is known for its characteristic organ interludes. Between pulsing beats and a sexy groove, this track breaks down to show off an impressive display of organ notes, in celebration hitting keys up and down the scale. Thriving with life (hence the name) from the beginning, the production displays a multitude of layers and percussion, from its solid drum groove, to cymbals, high hats, claps and synths and its sexy bass line accompanied by the melody of the organ. Already gained support from the very limited 4 artists to have it, Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, Pete Tong and our friend Darius Syrossian.

The special item vinyl picture disc makes this EP an exciting start to the year for Steve and the VIVa MUSiC crew. The digital release will drop a little later with a stunning interpretation from Murk.

He delivers 4 transmissions of alienating techno. Bleeps, haunting strings and off course 909 drummachines going mental. His work has always sounded unpredictable, brooding, dark and seem to follow musical rules from another realm. It’s as if these 4 tracks are delivered to us from a wormhole from the other side of the galaxy.
