Twenty Year Weekend (Two Decades of Darkroom Dubs) is the twenty-anniversary label compilation compiled and curated by Glasgow's Silicone Soul. Rather than take the retrospective route, they mark twenty years since they launched one of the UK's most revered underground house music labels with a new collection of music from a fresh global roll call who like it deep, dark and a little twisted. 
  
Also marking a quarter century since Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie released their first Silicone Soul 12-inch on Slam's esteemed Soma imprint, the compilation gets underway with the duo's own Fahrenheit 625 featuring Bitch Traxx originator Franklin Fuentes on a scene-setting killer groove declaring presciently, "I’ll take you there."

Thirteen further early-hours throbbers ignite with Italian future disco duo Phunkadelica unleashing malevolent chugger Phunkarama lashed with robotic vocals, metallic swells and early 90s bleeps and hoover tones. Mexican DJ/ producer Theus Mago, co-founder of the Duro label in 2015 with Moisees, then uncannily plugs into the metaphysical Darkroom Dubs current with Intensify, garnishing its groin-thwacking turbo groove with cascading melodic synth interplay. 
  
Lucky Luciano uncorks another top-notch percussive workout from Glaswegian Darkroom Dubs favourite Am$trad Billionaire, its dense, percussive groove mosaic slashed with ghostly sample shards. Hot on its heels are Berlin-based, Greek-German tour-de-force Brax Moody and Vamparela – aka Local Suicide - who duet with Wiener Planquadrat for some sexy rogue electro on Flashdance, splattered with lacerating Moroder-esque sequencer savagery. 

Next is the Factory City head-honcho Undo, fresh from his recent sublime house missiles on Darkroom Dubs, like Acid Summer and Aliens Go Home, who unleashes his ominous bass-driven acid monster, Vencejos. Before Nayan Soukie - aka Amount - rides the shimmering skyline surfer Figure Skating, packing the Darkroom Dubs trademark subterranean bass to the hilt. Then, the mysterious Subcisco conjures the ultimate funk party behemoth with Boiling Point evoking blaxploitation soundtracks in its aquatic stew of mangled strings and brass spectres hot-wired by contagious elastic bass. 
 
Parisian DJ/ producer Id!r, whose Darkroom Dubs missives include 2016's bass bin shredding Two Days In Hell, pulls off a typically dark, simmering groove beast on Haowie, topped with a gargling robo-vocal hook. Madrid-based Rotten City Records owner Alvaro Cabana then detonates 90s-style peak mayhem with Arde, casting its wailing power rhythm with crashing snare action. “Born in the 80s, raised by the 90s, lost in the 00s”, exclaims maverick techno-punk Pvlomo, immediately standing out with the sci-fi robot-gargling and Godzilla-like bass on My Little Vampire, his strength lying in lethally audacious twists and turns executed as the track powers mercilessly on into the darkness. 

Oslo-based duo Of Norway are the only act to feature on both anniversary compilations (bridged by 2015’s towering Black Desert Disco Cult 12-inch). Mixing glacial electro with spaced-out strings and eastern-tinged melodies, Always Almost is suitably auspicious. Istanbul’s Gunce Aci follows with Fallen Leaves, built on a juddering mutant electro lurch lathered with devilish voices, climaxing in the snarling acid disco thunder of Lead Boys, cultivated in Bogota’s Kaputt Club by enigmatic duo Nuclear Digital Transistor. Dense and pulsing with disembodied goth-like vocals, the track makes a suitably idiosyncratic finale for a compilation tangibly driven to breathe new life into Silicone Soul's manifesto to celebrate, nurture and push the music they love to play, make and support. 

Proper underground house music has always been about fearless electronic innovation with a human soul. An ethos crystallised in this spellbinding collection. - Kris Needs

Twenty Year Weekend  (Two Decades of Darkroom Dubs)

After featuring on our recent twentieth-anniversary compilation, we are delighted to welcome back Mexican DJ, audio sculptor and Controlla label head-honcho Pvlomo to Darkroom Dubs, who guides us through a rich, sonic escapade deep into his metaphysical realm of frequency vibration. 

A commanding kick drum and a luscious, pulsating bass tone lay the foundations for Infraworld - a voyage through a multiverse of celestial soundscapes. A relentless vortex of hypnotising synths surge and recede, propelling you through a prismatic wormhole rich with electronic sounds and textures, leaving you captivated and spellbound. 

Fellow Mexican and rising electronic music star Jorge Melgar, aka Badwolf, is on remix duties for Ritmo Son, with an atmospheric reinterpretation of the original. A deep pounding kick and dense resonances keep you focused through a murky landscape, unveiling a clearing awash with shimmering reverberations. Then, intoxicating voices evoke the sensation that you are effortlessly floating on a bottomless silvery lake before they suddenly dissipate and plunge you back into the depths of the darkness.

The same hypnotic and disorienting voices orbit around your head in the original mix of Ritmo Son, engulfing you in auditory disarray. This time, glitchy, crunchy, slightly off-kilter percussion provides the only sound to anchor yourself amidst the whirlwind of whispers. A precise and forceful bass and a gritty, gravelly acid line give the track a raw, unbridled power, perfect for late-night action on a smoky dancefloor bathed only in strobe lights. 

Deep, acidic and psychedelic, yet with a techno edginess - this release will only enhance Pvlomo's growing reputation within electronic music.

Pvlomo - Infraworld

It is a pleasure to welcome back Darkroom Dubs favourite Undo (aka Gabriel Berlanga) with Naranja Lima - a vibrant 2-track EP packed tight with luscious synths, rich tones, and evocative melodies. With an impressive back catalogue of original productions, open-minded live and DJ sets, and his imprint, Factory City, Gabriel is an established contributor to Catalonia's ever-evolving underground electronic music scene and beyond. 

The feel-good title track, Naranja Lima, has a Balearic optimism throughout its five minutes of blissful energy. A laidback, joyous bassline engulfs you in a warm ray of sunshine, whilst light and airy synths float and flutter away like leaves in a gentle breeze, giving the feeling of having stumbled into a paradisical setting, far away from the constraints and worries of everyday reality. It perfectly encapsulates the uplifting feeling of a sun-soaked dancefloor filled with smiling faces no matter where you turn, the soundtrack for a carefree summer afternoon Terrace session. 

The second track, Liquid, flows in a more emotionally charged, melancholic direction, sculpted by an array of complex sonic elements which meld together to form a rich electronic soundscape. A powerful arpeggiator with a warm, gritty character leads the charge and provides the dynamic, raw energy. A stuttering, jittery pad fills the peripheral space, immersing you in euphoric atmospherics. The break then reveals a contrastingly delicate, lush, ethereal melody which emerges from the dense harmonics,  inviting you to close your eyes and be swept away, guiding you deep into the depths on a revitalising mission.

Tunnel Signs (Ash Moses) makes his highly anticipated debut on Darkroom Dubs with Soft Chewing Voice, a three-track EP that pulses with analogue synths, haunting rhythms, and a taste for the surreal.

With a narrative drawn from the vibrant world of Sydney's underground electronic music scene, this release blurs the lines between reality and fiction, sending a cryptic transmission from the edge of the unknown. Known initially for his captivating after-hours DJ sets, Ash Moses seamlessly transitioned into music production. His early success with Tunnel Signs came with a collaboration with Id!r on the Clouded Vision label, where their track, Runner, quickly became a secret weapon for label heads Silicone Soul. A series of releases on renowned labels like Motorik and Air Signs followed, along with his intriguing partnership with Barney Kato in their Barney In The Tunnel project.

Set to release on Darkroom Dubs in November, Soft Chewing Voice promises to guide listeners into new terrain. Offering an experience as familiar as otherworldly - a testament to Tunnel Signs' unique ability to blend human connection with electronic mystique, grounding his music in a style that resonates with those who seek to explore beyond the ordinary, where the boundaries continue to be redefined one beat at a time.

Tunnel Signs - Soft Chewing Voice

Darkroom Dubs #1: No names, just numbers. One urgent, jacking slab of dark freaky funk. One shimmering, hypnotic slice of cosmic, dubby 5am magic: two untitled tracks that made history for the Glaswegian duo. Available for the first time digitally and remastered from DAT with warmth and respect, these are the cuts Silicone Soul chose to launch their Darkroom Dubs label way back in 2003.

DRD001A and DRD001AA would set the label's tone and parameters; the former was a Winter Music Conference anthem, the latter mutated into 'Language Of The Soul' on their self-titled fourth album. Together they paved the way for 18 years of authentic pulsating, hypnotic house music by a vast array of worldwide artists from Dino Lenny to Skinnerbox and Am$trad Billionaire to Justin Robertson's Deadstock 33s.

Strictly vinyl for its first few years, the label was the duos outlet for forward-thinking, no-frills, underground electronic music as they continued to tour the world and release on the iconic Soma Recordings. Designed and delivered like an under-the-counter style white-label, this same ethos that inspired Darkroom Dubs has remained consistent as we have evolved and grown with the times.

The next evolution is 'Darkroom Dubs Vol. V - Compiled & Mixed by Silicone Soul', dropping on the 25th of June, featuring several exclusives and a creative collaboration with Glasgow-based independent streetwear brand, 1 of 100. Before that, however, here are two stone-cold classic slabs of Silicone Soul history to get us in the groove.

After rain comes sunshine. After sadness comes joy. After dark comes light. After a brief hiatus during the most uncertain and straight-up frustrating period, most of us have ever experienced comes a brand new release on Darkroom Dubs.

Breaking the seal on a whole slew of forthcoming releases comes Middle Sky Boom. A mind-meltingly talented musician, singer, producer and DJ based in Tel Aviv, he makes his debut on Silicone Soul’s label with two joyous widescreen platters both primed for this exciting new wave of rave so many of us find ourselves in right now.  

‘Netzach’ ignites with a full-flavoured twist of late 90s prog. Where a deftly-layered and harmonic vocal texture sets the tone before chunky beats and lucid synths take the lead and boost us off into the cosmos on a rocket of pianos. Translating to eternity in Hebrew, the title Netzach communicates the idea of long-suffering, strength, endurance unto completion or patience. Something we can all relate to since March 2020. 

It’s backed by the equally forthright ‘Space Jam’. A tightly-coiled dancefloor rocket, blazing on a slinky live bassline and weaving on vocals from Josef himself, slowly but surely, more and more elements are added to the melting pot. The result is a bouncing, springy slab of timeless house music hedonism that’s perfect for this unique moment in time. 

We’ll never go anything quite like this again. Savour this moment, savour this music and hold tight for plenty more.

Both ‘Netzach’ and ‘Space Jam’ will feature on 'Darkroom Dubs Vol. V - Compiled & Mixed by Silicone Soul'. Legendary Glasgow duo Silicone Soul return to their longstanding Darkroom Dubs label mix series with a smouldering fifth edition. Inspired by the sudden splash of freedom and shows they have been able to play this summer and that great shared rush of energy we have all experienced in recent months. 

Available as both a mixed excursion into the deepest corners of the Darkroom Dubs psyche and as a collection of unmixed tracks, Darkroom Dubs Vol. V focuses on the label's recent releases, bringing us all up to speed on the underground sound they have always stood for and reminding us of the instantly distinctive and consistent signature they have spent the best part of 20 years honing and refining.

It pulls the listener into its own cosmic universe, locking them in for a transcendent 13-track trip to the dancefloor. Whipping up a moody tale of sweeping pads, synths rich in emotion, sudden plunges into deep abyssal basslines and rolling tones of hypnotic percussive momentum, Silicone Soul guide us to every corner of the Darkroom Dubs vault.

The planet-moving low end of Sigward’s remix of Id!r’s ‘Monday’, meets the nagging, raggedy acid of Justin Robertson’s Deadstock 33s ‘Dr Spectro On The Frontier’. While fantastic curveballs like Skinnerbox’s epic covers of Blancmange and Bauhaus collide with the hypnotic, new wave, techno soul of Dino Lenny's ‘Chained To A Ladder’. With cuts and remixes from the likes of Amount, II Est Vilaine, Alejandro Paz & Local Suicide, Undo and more, the duo showcase the label’s inimitable dark and beguiling sound. 

Some tracks are brand new, while others have existed as staples in their DJ sets for some time, but all of them are built to last and will capture imaginations for years to come. Featuring Shall Ocin’s remix of Silicone Soul’s most recent track ‘Fahrenheit 625’, and climaxing with Fango’s remix of their game-changing hit ‘Right On, Right On’, Darkroom Dubs Vol. V is a stark reminder that the spirit of the label is still very much alive and, while our time off the dance floor was temporary, the music will last forever.

Busking really is next-level in Berlin, with the acoustic guitar replaced by the laptop, drum machine and Minimoog, all powered by a car battery. It was this thrown together setup that first introduced the world to Skinnerbox as Iftah Gabbai and Olaf Hilgenfeld took their leftfield, jazzy attitude and improvised genre-bridging music to the streets of Berlin for impromptu jam sessions. It wasn't long before Skinnerbox were rocking the floors of Ritter Butzke and Wilde Renate and getting their music pressed to the black gold was surely the next step.
Releases on TonKind, Neopren and Bar25 Records followed before the guys were signed to Bpitch Control with their single, Anapol. 2012 saw the release of this follow-up single for the label, God Is Fading and in January of this year the guys lent their remix talents to The Silence Kills by fellow Bpitch artist, Dillon.
Today Skinnerbox make their Darkroom Dubs debut with Fertile Invalids. They have described their own music as infusing soul, breaking house, hard-edged techno, jazz and ambient electronica futurism. This three track ep encompasses all of the above and more and proves just what an exciting addition this live act are to the Darkroom Dubs roster.

2013 saw Silicone Soul celebrating the 10th Anniversary of their Darkroom Dubs imprint. Launched in Glasgow back in 2003, the DRD stamp has become a mark of quality and seen many established names exploring deeper realms whilst also unearthing fresh and exciting global talent. 

From Fabric to Watergate, The Standard Rooftop to Club Bahrein Buenos Aires, the Scottish duo have celebrated their disco-decade with a string of '10 Year' parties spread across the last 12 months, building on Darkroom Dubs already strong global reach. 

To round off their birthday in style Craig and Graeme have asked some of the label's main acts and strongest supporters to contribute a track for a new compilation. Artists including jozif, Ryan Crosson, Uner, Gary Beck, Of Norway, and Simon Garcia all feature in the collection that Silicone Soul present as a snapshot of the future sound and musical vision of Darkroom Dubs.

Jairo Catelo - Timeless (Clip)

Following up last year's dramatic and well-supported ‘Acid Summer’, @Undo returns to Darkroom Dubs with a release genuinely worth phoning home about.

Three tracks deep, ‘Aliens Go Home’ is the Spaniard’s most comprehensive release for Silicone Soul’s label, with his cosmic grooves stretching and mutating in all kinds of directions.

We open with ‘Portamental.' A playful take on the idea of portamento, it carries us smoothly into Undo’s never-ending world with its rippling hook and infinite chugging bassline. Resplendent with a touch of dark disco, a dash of deep house and a whole tonne of synths, it is the perfect opener.

The title track, ‘Aliens Go Home' follows it's a much darker trip that’s more direct and purposefully off-kilter. With powerful beats, a bubble-some acid bassline and carefully woven human vocal elements into the mix as percussion, there’s an otherworldly feel running throughout that will make all space cadets feel homesick.

Last but not least, ‘Yellow Spark’ brings us back to reality with crisp electroid beats, dubbed-out waves and a sweet-but-solemn vocoder vocal. Poignant, emotional and electric in its intent and sentiment, it concludes another beautiful EP for Darkroom Dubs.

Prowling into club season with intent, Darkroom Dubs usher in the long nights with this powerful two-tracker from Alvaro Cabana & Fargo Devianti. Please welcome ‘Los Flagelantes'.

Madrid meets Guadalajara on a mission of deep, pulsating 3 am funk. This transatlantic link-up has been brewing since Rotten City bossman Alvaro signed rising talent Fargo’s ‘Storm In A Teacup' EP with Vongold last year. A tense lesson in stark late-night electronica, the release follows a selection of resounding outings from Fargo on Hard Fist, leading to these two dark disco dispatches, ‘Flagelantes' and ‘Tacha'.

Two sides to a unique sonic story, both cuts come with their own deep inspirations and conceptual ideas. ‘Flagelantes' takes us back to the medieval foundations when a fanatical underground sect sought penance with pain. Los Flagelantes were a strict disciplinarian brotherhood that would welcome whipping to resolve their sins. Seven hundred years later, the only flagellation required now is to whip your dancefloor into shape, and with its stalking nature and stark peaks and troughs, this will most certainly do that.

‘Tacha' follows suit with a much more chaotic dynamic. A hearty nod to the post-punk, dark wave 80s sound, especially the influential Parálisis Permanente. They soundtracked the winds of change during the Movida Madrileña counter-culture in post-Franco Madrid. There's a hazy, woozy, cosmic fuzz sizzling palpably over the swaggering bass guitar and rolling, relentless kicks. It's real heady, shoe-gaze material. If ‘Flagelentes’ whips dancefloors into shape, 'Tacha' hypnotises them into submission.

Two wholly different techniques and concepts, but the same result: complete dancefloor escapism. Just how Darkrooms Dubs like it. Stay tuned.

"We are delighted and honoured to have the opportunity to re-release two of our all time favourite records on Darkroom Dubs. Both really shaped our love and appreciation of electronic music when we first heard them at The Arches and the Sub Club. It's wonderful to be able to give both tracks a fresh audience. The crowd reaction recently to both has been tremendous, everywhere from Club 69 to the Panorama Bar. The tracks date from 1993 & 1991, respectively. Frank De Wulf's, "People In Motion" is a track that still gives me a special thrill every time I hear it and it's now been lovingly re-mastered. With DJ HMC's, "Life Support Systems" the original DAT tape couldn't be located, so we had to search out a mint vinyl copy. Luckily Andy Pirie, who does the Melting Pot parties in Glasgow and a passionate audiophile, owns a seriously high fidelity turntable and was kind enough to record it digitally for us and our mastering engineer, Mathias 'Show-B' Schober, added that extra oomph! We both hope you enjoy the tracks as much as we do."

Kick starting the year with the aptly titled Capricorn, the horny beast races from the traps, driven by its powerful drums and rebellious untamed spirit. A chilling melody and call of the wild, are at odds with the rock solid electronic strut, yet work brilliantly together to create our astrologic opener. 

Warrior, poet, and fellow zodiac creature, Sagittarius, serves up a slice of optimistic flair. Glittering keys cascade and shimmer, atop a pulsating beat and swirling synths to create a cinematic soundtrack as much at home in the chill of winter as the freshness of spring.

With an impressive back catalogue of original productions, open-minded live and DJ sets, and his imprint, Factory City, Gabriel is an established contributor to Catalonia's ever-evolving underground electronic music scene and beyond. 

The feel-good title track, Naranja Limon, has a Balearic optimism throughout its five minutes of blissful energy. You can always tell when the Norwegian's are in the house. Deep, moody,atmospheric, lovely vocals all glazed with a wintery touch and sparkle. The very same can be said for the Darkroom Dubs debut from Terje Saether.
The relatively unknown Oslo based producer is about to make a name for himself with the gorgeously spooky tech sounds of "Scared". A deep synth groove delivers us to the break where we are bathed in the sultry vocal of Malin Pettersen.
A key track for DRD label chief's Silicone Soul, "Scared" has been treated to a wealth of remixes. Not only are we treated to the tougher, dubby, glitched techno workouts of Freska &amp; Daniel Kyo, Nadja Lind and Klartraum but we are also presented with a stunning mix from label newbie Gregorythme and a quite unbelievable magnum opus from Terje's compatriots, Of Norway. At 24 mins she's an epic that you simply MUST take the time to listen... stunning!

Two years we've had to wait for the second in Skinnerbox's Edits series on Silicone Soul's Darkroom Dubs, but as the saying goes... All good things...

Having wow'd us with their bravery in taking on Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' on #1 - a track that's still receiving airplay from Gilles Peterson - the German duo turn their attentions from Jazz to Rock, with a brand new brace of respectful reworks.

On the A we have Skinnerbox's edit of "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by English post-punk band Bauhaus. The song was the band's first single, released on 6 August 1979 by record label Small Wonder. Often considered the first gothic rock record, many see it as a seminal classic that went on to influence the later Goth scene.
The B-side plays host to Skinnerbox's edit of “Gouge Away” by American alternative rock band, Pixies. The original features on their classic album “Doolittle” from ’89, a massive indie success in the UK. The band hugely influenced the grunge scene.

Delicate and respectful edits from the duo, that see these two classic tracks expertly tailored for the dance floor.

French producer Nhar, renowned for his deep, mysterious and melodic productions, presents yet another glorious example in ’Surface’, his new EP for Darkroom Dubs.

With a depth and warmth to his sound created from a skilful mix of analog and digital techniques, Nhar’s music has often been described as having taken you on a journey. Traversing the realms of light and dark. His latest double-header follows suit, further strengthening his impressive run of releases with Factor City, Chapter 24 and Days Of Being Wild.

Rewind to 88/89: the heady haze of two culture-accelerating summers commence and music, youth culture, fashion, and society are changed forever. All change: A paradigm shifting gift from our original dancefloor forefathers, a new fire of unity, musical togetherness and sense of creative adventure was lit. And it’s our duty – whether you’re old enough to have been there at the start, or joined the movement at any point in between – to keep those fires burning.

Fast forward to 2018: Silicone Soul’s Darkroom Dubs take the torch and tend the flames in their own unique way with this timely seasonal dispatch. Building on the foundations dug 30 years ago, ‘Darkroom Dubs Presents Summer Love’ eschews any sense of nostalgia in favour of a celebration of the original principals that have shaken club walls ever since. And it does so with a spirited sense of unity as five firm label friends return bearing timeless gems that are fine-tuned to complement any summer selection scenario from 88 to 2048...

Long-time label brothers-in-arms, Of Norway light the embers with the poetically titled, ‘She Never Lost A Passenger’. Unrelenting kicks, slinky filtered bass, a powerful one-word vocal, subtle rolling breaks and a sudden drop into a classic M1 hook all wrapped up in a Balearic bundle of bliss; it’s the perfect start to a unifying storm.

Freska follows with another farsighted slice of freedom. ‘R.U.N’ continues the rich vein of Darkroom Dubs form he’s been building for over six years with a shimmering piano riff, hip-slinking conga hypnosis and all manner of trippy textures. Meanwhile, more psychedelic wonders can be found in ‘Infinite Interchange’, courtesy of seasoned summer lover Justin Robertson. Denting the Deadstock 33s dials for an ageless 808-melting acid house workout, it’s a sweet taste of what’s to come as the label prepares for his forthcoming vinyl release, ‘Music Is Madness (To Those Who Cannot Hear It)’ due at the end of August.

Skinnerbox are also on tease duty as they set us up for their own forthcoming Darkroom Dubs release, ‘Music For The Sad & Rainy Open Air’ that’s due in late July. Embodying the Balearic spirit with birdsong and Kenyan chorus, ‘Nyeusi’ squeezes their soul machines with class, subversion and a spirit that would sit just as well in a field off the M25 30 years ago or Ushuaïa today.

Finally, we’re whisked away in a fog of Argentinian cosmicity as venerable Buenos Aires selector Mariano Mellino allures us into a deep, extensive progressive trip. Introversion levels set to stun, ‘A Little Cloud Walker’ reminds us of the fine art of restraint, patience and guaranteed higher levels.

Authentic not nostalgic; ‘Darkroom Dubs Presents Summer Love’ celebrates our shared dancefloor inheritance. These instances are hard, if not impossible, to imagine as this year’s unlikely heatwave continues to dazzle and frazzle us. But we all know that those rainy day moments do exist. We’ve all played them in the past. We’ve all got many more in the future. And now Darkroom Dubs have the perfect soundtrack for them: Skinnerbox – ‘Music For Sad & Rainy Open Airs’. 

Two tracks tailored for the greyest of outdoor shows. Moody, pensive and vitally atmospheric; both ‘Cold Neck’ and ‘Wet Shoes’ counter and complement any damp DJ set consummately. The former is a lavish, eight-minute saga that ripples with analog weight and shines with sudden cosmic blasts. Silicone Soul's Darkroom Dubs, known for its unfaltering output of quality house, returns with their Limited Edition Vinyl series with an EP from Hamburg and Berlin based Soukie and Windish. The 'Flatmate Ghost' EP takes the classic tech house aesthetic on a laid back, rolling journey, while two distinctly dissimilar remixes open your eyes and ears further.

Title track 'Flatmate Ghost' quickly lures you into a subtly relaxing beat but as soon as you're locked, dissonant synth bursts and ominous, pitched down vocal meanderings immediately disrupt the dance. While Kellerkind's take on the original brings forth a shoulder swinging groove, soothing piano riffs and clever silences. Andres Zacco's version moves with relentless percussion, delving into the hollow depths of dark bass.

'Quality Time' offers the more sensual side of Soukie & Windish's production. Here, otherworldly harmony prevails while the characteristic jarring stabs take a backseat. Soukie & Windish manage to visit opposite ends of the spectrum without losing the unique creative resonance the pair found in this collaboration.

To kick start the celebrations of a formidable ten years of their Darkroom Dubs imprint, Silicone Soul's Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie present the first of in a line of several very special releases and events scheduled in early 2013. 'Darkroom Dubs Vol.3 - Compiled & Mixed by Silicone Soul' is a retrospective that charts some of the many highlights from the label throughout the past few years, since the release of Darkroom Dubs Vol. 2 in April 2010.

First appearing on Scotland's seminal Soma label in 1998, DJ-production duo Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie, aka Silicone Soul, have occupied a special place in the over-crowded field of electronic dance music, mainly through the depth and quality of their recordings plus an innate understanding of music's grand heritage and its constant development. They have released four critically acclaimed albums, gained residencies at some of Europe's most celebrated clubs, scooped numerous DJ Mag nominations, stormed the UK charts and launched their Darkroom Dubs label in 2003.

The label's elevation above normal dance music concerns is personified by the fact that each release has carried Dracula author Bram Stoker's infamous words, "I am beginning to feel this nocturnal existence tell on me. It is destroying my nerve. I start at my own shadow and am full of all sorts of horrible imaginings..." A short video collage of still-startling silent movie surrealism has been produced to mark the tenth anniversary, further underlining the Darkroom Dubs ethos that the deep, the weird and the timelessly cool have been co-existing with organic ferocity over the last decade.

Emerging from the ethereal space echoes and cosmic reverb of compilation opener 'One Thing (Ghost FX)', filters through a quote from Flight of the Phoenix, I think a man only needs one thing in life and that's someone to love, if you cant give him that, give him something to hope for, if you cant give him that, then just give him something to do. The mix then glides off into the minimal sounds of Of Norway's, 'Blot Ditt Eige Lam (Frisvold & Lindbaek Remix)' and beyond. 

Over the course of the mix were expertly navigated through a slew of tracks oozing with soothing, melodic deepness, carefully blending special cuts like Terje Saether's 'Scared' and Los Suruba's dubbed out remix of AFFKT's 'Fail Fast' into the understated build of Patlac's retake of 'The Woods' by Danza Macabra. The mix then rises into Alex Niggemann & Marc Poppcke's 'Keep It On' and Freska's delicious 'Honey From Within' before ending with two perfect examples of exactly what Silicone Soul, moreover the Darkroom Dubs imprint, does best: deep electronic music.

Sometimes you need to look back to look forward; marking the start of a new decade, Silicone Soul celebrate 20 years since their game-changing breakthrough hit with a brand new remastered version and two new remixes.

‘Right On, Right On’ and on and on and on… The duo’s iconic Cutis Mayfield sampling single came in many shapes and sizes around the turn of the century. Beginning as ‘Right On 4 Tha Darkness’ in 1999, it then became ‘Right On, Right On’ in 2000 with that legendary hypnotic bongo loop that brought the soaring strings and warm jacking groove together so exceptionally well that another version popped up a year later; with added vocals from Louise Clare Marshall, ‘Right On!’ smashed the UK mainstream, hitting number 15 in the official charts… And led to the Glasgow duo famously declining an offer to go on Top Of The Pops. Two decades later and they still don’t regret that decision.

“We’ve had a lot of remix and licensing requests recently for 'Right On, Right On’ with even a dodgy progressive house cover version appearing back in January. Soma’s release schedule was sadly full, so we thought, f**k it, let’s do a re-release on our own Darkroom Dubs label, and as it’s been 20 years since the first release, we thought it would be perfect timing for an anniversary edition too. Conor Dalton, from Glowcast Mastering in Berlin, was kind enough to remaster the original direct from DAT and to complete the package, we’ve also included a new dynamite remix from Fango, with Matthias Tanzmann revisiting his much-loved remix for a 2020 version.”

Warmer than it’s ever sounded before, the new Glowcast remaster comes complete with remixes from Matthias Tanzmann and Fango. Originally released in 2012 as part of Soma’s own 20 year anniversary, Tanzmann squeezes every ounce of soul possible from the percussion elements while Italian Fango gives ‘Right On Right On’ a right old shoeing with a massive lolloping disco bassline, marching pianos and an injection of funk positivity 2020 has sorely missed so far.

20 years deep, still taking us through the darkness, still focused on a bright future. We need music like this now more than ever. Stay tuned for more Darkroom Dubs dispatches very soon.
