Rusty Selects - August 2017

Happy to share 'WANDERSONIC,'  -  one of my many unruly audio groupings. In addition to WANDERSONIC selections, I will be assembling and sharing a variety of other, genre-centric playlists - offering more consistent sonic flavours.
 
You will notice a relatively wide bind --- a somewhat,   s p a c i o u s,   w a n d e r i n g   selection of musical genres.

This collection does not contain every genre, but it is only the first of many unruly bunches; there is still plenty of sonic ground to be covered. The increased potential for sonic dissonance and discomfort definitely justifies, or at the very least explains, the less frequent assemblage and enjoyment of these sorts of listening experiences. I believe strongly, though, that It can be just as important and fulfilling to listen to lists that stray from strict genre conventions as it is to listen to those that stick to them. One will cover more space vertically, the other horizontally. Climbing a sonic play-ground rather than sticking in it.

Each bunch will contain a different assortment of styles and genres. Though it might seem like a random shuffle to some, it is always a curated spectrum. You may not notice drastic/diverse or risky jumps in key as we go from one song to the next; it is more pleasant to have at least one sonic strand tasked to thread the connection. This means less sonic tension in general, and therefore, an increased chance of broader genre acceptance. 

The idea is that a wider spectrum of sound facilitates proximity of disparate/different musical genres. Proximity is meant to encourage the acceptance of unfamiliar/different musical genres for those who are generally accustomed to apathy or discomfort while engaging with them. Instead of picking up on the distance between each style, I hope these instalments will encourage people to make connections and notice the similarities that are found in disparate sonic styles.

While there will always be difference and diversity, there does not always have to be distance.

Like the forgotten soundtrack to an overcast day, "Going Down" by Hungarian producer AMB seeks to explore an inner restlessness in the listener. A perfect storm of downtempo, techno, RnB, and future bass vibes permeate this seven track EP, acting as the perfect illustration of this songwriter's diverse skill set. Moody strings are interwoven with shadowy bass laid bare on a bedrock of intelligent percussion, setting up a tender yet climatic atmosphere for the album. Toward the end of the journey, legendary bass music producer The Widdler flips "Night Slide" into a highly emotive excursion through future garage, concluding things in a fitting fashion. The entire release is available as a free/pay-what-you-want download via Gravitas Recordings, marking a sense of AMB's gratitude toward his fans as well as life itself.

"Paradise – Our descent into nirvana, and soft soul progression, begins with the sweet honeyed warble of Lylli’s vocal. Her narration is shifting pitch with the rise and fall of the fades and snaps that bring to attention each bar. It feels, as strings drive the track through its dense chorus, much like watching a time lapse video. The fluidity of time moving at great pace over slowly dissolving objects. Melting glaciers. Starry nights. Cityscapes. We’re invited to watch, as the big picture shapes up in front of us. ﻿Ariel Romero, a.k.a Darkside was born on February 13, 1978 in San Isidro, Buenos Aires, Argentina. At age 8 he began listening to house music, rap at 12 and 13 years old he mixed with vinyls, at age 16 and made his debut as a DJ in some clubs and had his own radio show.
He currently works as a producer and beatmaker. Among his works can be found collaborations with other artists such as Mr. Moods from Canada. Also produced some MC's like LHHO (Colombia) Gallant (UK) Uncharted (USA)
and contributed to The French Touch Connection. Currently working for the label Nuages Records and Dusted Wax Kingdom.
