On today’s edition of the show, Darone invites @LaraSarkissian. Lara is an electronic musician, DJ and broadcaster born and raised in San Francisco; currently based in Los Angeles. Sarkissian is a resident on NTS Radio, a home for her narrative-style mixes that showcase dance and electronic music from around the globe. She blends across dub, techno, house, dnb, bass, jungle, noise, mainly hailing from the underground and a reflection of her collaborations with artists in the respected genres.  Sarkissian cofounded experimental dance label and event series CLUB CHAI and has released with labels Tresor, Knekelhuis, All Centre, TT, and SOS Music. She has DJ'd nights for Tresor, Hyperdub, Unsound Festival, MoMA PS1, Roskilde Festival, Boiler Room broadcasts and more.

On today’s edition of the show, Darone invites @deonjamarmd. Deon is a Detroit native whose roots stem from the crates of family. Growing up hearing many different styles of music in the household is the inspiration behind his range of selection. Inspired by everything from jazz, funk, & soul, to more modern black dance music forms like hip-hop/r&b, house, techno, & broken beat.

His career in Detroit began as resident DJ & organizer for the monthly hip-hop showcase “Bluecollar Gentleman”.
Around the same time, working with Theo Parrish to promote the Music Gallery party series & most recently to co-curate Theo’s ‘Detroit Forward’ compilation on K7 Records.

Aside from playing gigs, Deon also enjoys programming events of his own such as the “Healin’ Session” party series and the music and art exhibition, “Black Music”.

On this edition of the show, Darone invites Hadj Sameer. @hadjsameer is a documentarist and record collector. Based in Paris, but of Algerian origin, he has been traveling the world for the past fifteen years, searching for rare vinyl and grooves from all over. These musical universes are mixed with a deep passion for electronic music, especially Chicago house, Detroit techno, British dubstep, Drum & Bass and jungle. The encounters the artist has made during his travels — from Will Bankhead (The Trilogy Tapes) to Ron Morelli (L.I.E.S.) or Max D (Future Times) — have allowed him to develop a circle of friends and collaborators who feed many of his projects. The last one is a documentary called “Raï is not dead” on Arte TV channel in which he takes the hand of viewers to tell the story of Raï through his collection and encounters.

His motto? “Dig, find, share.”

On today’s edition of the show, Darone invites David Haffner. What can you say after 30 years of collecting records and DJing? David Haffner is attracted to the underplayed, underrated, and undiscovered nooks and crannies of the record world. Along the way, he’s popularized a few records and broken them on various scenes. He’s been involved in the Hip Hop, and every genre that went into that in the 90s, Deep Funk, Disco, and Rare Soul scenes.

He’s worked in music licensing for years, most notably putting out the compilation Disco With A Feeling on Athens Of The North, but also working with Jazzman, Big Crown, Light In The Attic, and his own labels the Preservation Project and Friends Of Sound.

The latter being the namesake of his record stores for the last 17 years - through which he’s sold records from the novice to the hardest of hardcore collectors of every genre and been dubbed the “tastemaker’s tastemaker” and the “record grandpa”.

On today’s edition of the show, Darone invites Angela Brussel. Angela Brussel is an American-Armenian-Lebanese writer based in Beirut, Lebanon with works that have appeared in several print and online publications including New Statesman, Literary Hub, and Los Angeles Review of Books, to name a few. She is also a contributing editor to Rusted Radishes: Beirut Art and Literary Journal and founder of Nour Jan Presents, which is a platform that uses oral histories and archival music to do ethnographic deep dives into different diaspora communities around the world. She is currently at work on her first novel.

Terrestrial Funk’s sixth release explores over a decade of Armenian disco, funk, and soul. Compiled by Darone Sassounian who spent three years tracking down the records and artists; fulfilling a calling to lift his people’s voice, a people that have always faced the threat of erasure. The music was made a generation after the Armenian Genocide, a testament to perseverance. The seven tracks featured are incredibly inventive and unique in their interpretations of these Western seventies sounds. This compilation comes at an urgent time as 2020 set the stage for Azerbaijan and Turkey to perpetuate genocidal rhetoric as they invaded Armenian borders and bombed civilian cities eventually resulting in the loss of lives and land stewarded for millennia. All while the western world paid little notice. It is with great gratitude and purpose that Terrestrial Funk rebirths this music and uplifts the voice of the Armenian Diaspora.
