Lots of synths - bass arp, pianos, reverb and acoustic guitars, orchestral basses, cello, and French horn set to hip hop and Latin beats at 75 bpm.

I played French horn as a child from age 10-18 in a public school concert band and later marching band. So I added a brief French horn passage with cello in a short classical treatment to herald the arrival of Venus and a nod to the Renaissance painting of the Goddess of Love.

Venus Rising

the captain, mad captain
he told the men his plans
and then they went out stealing things
so they could rule these lands

they stole four antique cannons from the castle
hijacked a truckload of metal from the factory
they stole a jet engine from the old air force base
the mad captain nodded satisfactorily

they welded the metal into a battering ram
and the big jet engine was for extra speed
cannons armed in every direction
the mad captain had returned to the sea (x2)

they were a terror in the open waters
they’d sink any ship that they saw
and with their jet engine, they were able to avoid apprehension
and stay a step ahead of the law

vengeance in the form of a storm
came rolling across the sea
the mad captain pulled his eyes from the sky
he’d seen more than he wanted to see
"all hands below deck", the captain roared
"tie yourself down so you don’t go overboard"

Rodolfo Planes offered me this great arrangement and suggested the title of 'Professional Liars' as a starting point. I changed the title to Career Liars as it scanned better with the melody and although we didn’t discuss the subject closely we both had our own ideas who these usual suspects might be. You all may also have your own choices other than these potential ‘Comeback Kids’. 

This was first written in 2022, but has developed gradually over the last two years with Ce Mastro’s spectacular chorus harmony arrangement lifting the song to astonishing new heights, then lastly Georg’s additional sax work giving a renewed energy and power. Thanks to everyone for their valued collaboration on this. Thanks for taking the time to listen.

You could not fathom the loss, from a casual toss, ruminating glance through a broken down fence. Counting money in your head as you went to bed with the sleepless nights
You were planning out fights, for the rest of your life, with denial and strife from your unstable wife,

You were the grinning side of loss, a room that's been tossed, isolated thoughts of the finance costs. They could not see it in you, the love that you knew, deep in yourself, hid inside your shelf. And the skies fell open and you smiled at the hopin of seeing it through with a friend or two, and you changed your view from the scabs and decay to a more healthy way.
