Emerging first as an instrumental, Soak It Up grew surprisingly quickly. Improvising at the piano always leads somewhere fruitful for me. The original piano recording was noisy, but in a good way with the sound of the piano hammers and fingers on the keys really suggesting a warm, cosy musical situation. The track starts out with a homemade sample and opens out into vocals from Kojey Radical which describe an ongoing relationship in turmoil. There’s love in the song but also recognition of the gripes and annoyances on each side. It was a real vibe putting it together.

It’s been a while since I wanted to share with you something different than the straight forward techno stuff I like to play in my sets most of the time. These times were very special and I tried to step back a little bit and record something that illustrates another side of me, but similar to my style at the same time in a certain way. Breakbeat & Electro music influence my work since many years now, so I decided to chose 50 breaks tracks that I love and to mix them into a 3h rave summer podcast. Dart Echo's mix series kicks off with Rings Around Saturn (@rdjm0). Notorious for idiosyncrasy, experimentation, and a wide breadth of taste and knowledge, Rory McPike's 2020 releases saw him jump from fizzing electro on Pure Space to low-ride, dubbed-out bass on Modern Hypnosis. 

His Dart Echo mix is evidence that no genre is safe from the Melbourne stalwart: the journey paces beautifully through the bubbling groove of tech and deep-house with highlights from Galcher Lustwerk and Loraine James and Le3 bLACK. Cognisant of the global predicament, McPike expertly expresses how we're feeling, delivering a mix equally apt for a socially-bubbled lounge-room boogie or a solitary plunge into headphone-headspace.

Qi M0N0 (@qi-mono) arrives with an assiduous selection of rolling left-field sounds with a particular focus on mid-tempo tracks with vocal oddities.
