Justin Aulis Long is a sonic sorcerer, urban Homeric poet, and cosmic wanderer that exists within the liminal spaces where light meets dark. Long is the offspring of a gorgon, conceived within a brick and mortar labyrinth while surrounded by the supernatural electronic voices of angelic forces.

While engaging in themes of the uncanny and erotic, Long opens thresholds which lead to psychedelic realms during communal dance gatherings. Applications of sonic alchemy during ritual action generate vibrant forces created through collective effervescence, causing a bubbling over of ecstatic energy leading to rapture. During the rite, incantations are expressed through fusing a swarm of aural fragments composed from diverse temperaments by way of a personal and singular technique.Sacred objects (records), selector’s tools (turntables and mixer), body, spirit, harmonic and discordant voices unify and become one - The Soft Machine.

During a ritual performance, phonic collages are created intuitively on sight, sigils are aurally direct with specific intent, and offerings are bestowed before an alter, all charged by an engine of chaos. Time and space unravels while normality ruptures and disintegrates as foundational structures of the status quo are dismantled through intensive executions, founded in the practices surrounding musical selection.

I was talking to a friend today about how Pepe Bradocks track Deep Burnt was one of those magical tunes that can be mixed with a wide variety of sounds/vibes and add a layer of deepness/emotion to what ever it touches in a way that only Pepe can with his productions. 
I remember mixing this with Colette's Sexuality (H&G mix) back in the very early 2000's and thought they went together perfectly, literally from start to finish. I dusted off the Colette wax today and melted in Deep Burnt. They are now one. Enjoy!

Today marks ten years since James Yancey, better known as J Dilla, passed away. Regularly considered as one of the greatest producers and musicians to ever grace hip-hop, his innovative techniques, meticulous accuracy and outright groove have been mimicked and revered since he passed in February 2006. His magnum opus, Donuts, was released just three days before his death; much of it produced from his hospital bed using just an MPC, sampler and portable turntable — a remarkable feat under any circumstance.

Raj Chaudhuri (aka Raji Rags) — head of music at Boiler Room and Livin' Proof co-founder — has been an avid Dilla disciple for a long time. Classic Album Sundays recently invited him to chair a talk on Dilla's finest work on the anniversary of its release date. What ensues is not only a highly informative and emotional examination of the 31-track project, but a cross-check of all the relevant events that lead up to its making.

Donuts Dissected: 10 Years On

Following on from the hugely successful discovery of a never-before-heard J Dilla mixtape, Boiler Room continue their coverage of hip hop's finest technician with their second Yancey-dedicated podcast in partnership with Classic Album Sundays.

Where Episode 1 saw Boiler Room Head of Music and Dillaphile, @RajiRags, break down his magnum opus Donuts, this sequel digs into the anatomy of his 2001 debut LP Welcome 2 Detroit (BBE Records) alongside Dilla's mentor, @AmpFiddler.

Containing rare tape demos from a 17-year-old Jay Dee, classic J Dilla productions and unheard beats broken down to their kick and snare bare bones (via Dilla's own MPC files) and plenty of other musical nuggets, it's a must listen for anyone vaguely interested in the genius' work.

Over the summer I was asked to do an ambient mix to go along with a light installation called Monolithic. The art piece was presented at the Motion Bristol Yard event that took place at the end of August. Enjoy!
