In a city of DJ transplants, the born and bred (East) Berliner Lucia Luciano is a standout in more ways than one. The DJ, community organizer, podcaster, model and co-founder of the popular Hoe_mies collective has become an unmistakable figure in a notoriously homogenous scene. Both in her work with Hoe_mies, whose mission is to create safe spaces for marginalized people in a scene dominated by cis, white males, and in her distinctive sound as a DJ, Lucia Lu challenges the narrow conception and antiquated stereotypes of what “Berlin techno” looks like and sounds like, and most importantly, who it is for.

Lucia Lu’s warm, upbeat and soulful sets, which merge the cathartic danceability of house and techno with sassy pop, hip-hop and disco anthems from yesteryear, are powerful protests against the austere, self-serious atmosphere that dominates the electronic music sphere. Luciano’s sound, and the joyful and diverse crowds that it attracts, are loving tributes to the original spirit of electronic dance music: a genre pioneered by queer people of color, who engineered a euphoric sound that allowed them to be and express themselves unapologetically, and to celebrate the beauty in one another, in total freedom.

We've all heard about slow/fast at this point, but what about slow/slow?

For the last FACT mix of March, two artists who've made more moves than most in jungle of late - Londoner Fracture and Manchester staple Chimpo - slow things down. Way, way down. In Fracture's words, "this is a slow motion mix. The idea came from wanting to fit a load of music we had got together into a mix but having to slow some down to make it work". So there's music from all across the musical spectrum - from Björk, FKA Twigs and Boards of Canada to Mumdance, Novelist and Wiley; hell, there's even an airing for 'Midas Touch' - but very little of it sounds as you know it.

A comment on our medicated generation? An online mix that finally taps into that "dull, empty feeling" we're all left with when we stare at a screen all day? Nah, it's probably just because a ton of shit sounds cooler when its slowed down. Make sure to check Chimpo and Fracture's recent Metalheadz single, Chimpo's Monkey Teef mixtape and Fracture's label Astrophonica.

No tracklist, because that would completely spoil the fun.

The Naked King is the final chapter in my « King Of Blends » trilogy of mix tapes (the previous instalments are 2016’s 100% RADIO HITS and 2017’s Impressions). I wanted to explore once again the world of blends and giving iconic pop pieces as well as classic underground tunes a new context by layering them with more modern and/or obscure tracks. I wanted it to be about finding beauty in anachronisms and considering time not as a line but as a dot where Squarepusher, Lil Flip, Rod Lee, Lorenzo Senni and Finn’s music are happening simultaneously. I wanted to go against the rules of progression in DJ sets, while maintaining a fluidity that resists tempo and key changes. It is a stream of consciousness that ends up being more informed by the construction of a Lil Wayne verse than the typical temporality of your conservative DJ’s latest techno mix. Every track builds on the flow of the previous one played, but then i realized it went from a jungle track to a Houston rap acapella to a grime beat to an accelerated Miami club track to MF Doom, and i thought it was fine, because it’s all the same music to me and it all makes perfect sense. Lots of tracks are played at the wrong speed, things slow down and accelerate again, and the ride itself, no matter how chaotic, becomes the message. In the year when every one is acting surprised that t’s acceptable again for DJs to « play anything », i wanted to show the world what « play anything » truly means.

There is an effectiveness and simplicity to Mall Grab’s house music
that very quickly made him a star. The artist from an Australian town
makes tracks as dusty as homeland, but imbued with feel good melodies,
irresistible drums and smart samples that elevated them above pure
tools. This raw, instinctive, unfussy sound has found him on labels
like Looking For Trouble as well as the Steel City Discs label he runs
with Jarred Kennedy and Jackson Fitzsimmons. Back in February he
stepped out with an EP under his own name in a mission of
“self-discovery” and it’s a journey the world continues to be closely
tuned in to.

His mix is a high octane selection of brilliantly physical sounds.
From supersized house to throwback breakbeats, he slams it all
together with a fist pumping efficiency that means two hours race by
in a flash.  It’s a fun mix, too, with old school rave flavours, saw
tooth stabs and bumping kicks all brimming with the sort of life that
makes Mall Grab such an appealing and accessible talent.
