In a city of DJ transplants, the born and bred (East) Berliner Lucia Luciano is a standout in more ways than one. The DJ, community organizer, podcaster, model and co-founder of the popular Hoe_mies collective has become an unmistakable figure in a notoriously homogenous scene. Both in her work with Hoe_mies, whose mission is to create safe spaces for marginalized people in a scene dominated by cis, white males, and in her distinctive sound as a DJ, Lucia Lu challenges the narrow conception and antiquated stereotypes of what “Berlin techno” looks like and sounds like, and most importantly, who it is for.

Lucia Lu’s warm, upbeat and soulful sets, which merge the cathartic danceability of house and techno with sassy pop, hip-hop and disco anthems from yesteryear, are powerful protests against the austere, self-serious atmosphere that dominates the electronic music sphere. Luciano’s sound, and the joyful and diverse crowds that it attracts, are loving tributes to the original spirit of electronic dance music: a genre pioneered by queer people of color, who engineered a euphoric sound that allowed them to be and express themselves unapologetically, and to celebrate the beauty in one another, in total freedom.

EPM Podcast 135 comes from DJ and producer DJ Rush. DJ Rush's hard techno sets are legendary from his birthplace of Chicago to his adopted home of Berlin. A 6’6” self-styled techno freak, the producer of such monsters as ‘Freaks on Hubbard’ and ‘Get On Up’ frequently mixes techno with unrestrained energy and a cheeky smile. His tough-jacking party vision shines through in this energised mix that whips up the likes of Jack Frost, Kyle Geiger, S-File, Tenzella, Pfirter, Goncalo M, Linken Ray, Secluded and of course all the while peppered with Rush’s own raw drum machine funk. 

DJ Rush draws on his varied taste in music from contemporary Brazilian Jazz, and rare disco to The Beatles to take you on a tour of the deep side of reality, mind and soul through his vision of rhythmic percussive style. Rush gives recordings physical and mind-puzzling energy. The 6'6" giants' open-minded attitude to life is: Take me for what I am or don't take me at all. Born in Chicago (USA), he grew up on the South Side and started to party at a very young age, immediately picking up on the fever of the music. He would attend clubs like The Ringzone, Playground, The Candystore and The Music Box. 

Before he began playing gigs in Chicago, he started making tracks in his bedroom with his friends' sinsonic drums. In Rush’s own words, "It's always important and interesting to make music according to your feelings and experiences", which is exactly what he does every time. 

Continuing to fly the flag for his high intensity, hard jacking style his Kne’ Deep label is fast approaching its 100th release. The new album Kne' Deep Compilation Vol 1. is out now.
