'Assemblage' - a study of reconstructing analog formats in the digital realm. The track is composed of 36 individual 1/4" tape loops created on an Akai reel-to-reel. The video is animated from 1000 frames of 35mm film, shot using a Lomography 'Lomokino' camera. Physical editing was applied to both formats before digital reassembly. Sonic and visual artifacts have been preserved to highlight the process.

Assemblage

This is my first submission to the Naviar Haiku Music Challenge.  The project for this week:  https://www.naviarrecords.com/2021/05/12/naviarhaiku384-the-beginning-of-all-art.

This haiku immediately brought to mind a musical line, slowly building in length note by note, joined by others building in the same fashion.  I did this with simple sine wave lines which each begin quietly alternating the first 2 or 3 notes of a 23-note melody, adding gradually to how many notes each can play.  Subtle richness is provided by tiny "imperfections" in the rhythm of the lines, plus variations in the attack and decay of each line.  Lastly, the lines are joined by a slow progression of low chords as the music builds towards all four parts playing the entire melody, at which point they vanish.

Haiku 384

The work unfolds as a long slow series of "breaths", which are chords built out of sine waves which are stacked along the harmonic series: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8.  The chords are tuned in pure Pythagorean intervals, and the relationship between successive chords are as well.  All the notes shimmer with varying rates and depths of tremolo, the delays between the chords notes and the chords vary.  Each "breath" moves slowly from left to right in the listening space, and are specially processed to produce a sense of distance.
The water sounds are multiple layers of a live recording I just made this past weekend while hiking in the coastal redwood forests of far-northern California.

I was instantly enthralled by the first two lines:
so the earth may run
euphoric with light

I had a vision of the piece as a auditory celebration of light and movement.  Using the trusty RTcmix software toolkit (http://www.rtcmix.org), I created layers of synthetic (as opposed to sampled) sounds organized into harmonic fields, textures, ranges, overlapping and transforming over time.

Maya Deren (1917 - 1961) is considered one of true pioneers of experimental film yet unlike many of the film makers she influenced ( Jean-Luc Godard, Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch) her work is rarely experienced outside of academic and film school environments. As part of Kirby and Ward’s continuing investigation into the important (and often overlooked) role of women in the history of Contemporary Art  Discontinued Space: The Cinema of Maya Deren will present several of Deren’s short movies with original live scores written by Kirby, Ward and Banks.

Deren employed a vast array of cinematic devices (looping, reversing, overlaying and time manipulation) to create vignettes that focused on graphic and kinetic form rather than straightforward narrative. Conceptually the work examines rhythm, isolation, social constructs, movement and ritual, all of which is underpinned by the notion of the inner world and its disconnection from the space of everyday life. 

It is the conceptual framework of Deren’s cinema that informs the scores produced for this project. Rather than compositions that ‘soundtrack’ the  action and the visual imagery the music reflects and explores Deren’s philosophical beliefs and her desire to immerse her audience in a world that is barely hinted at in everyday life yet sits just under the skin of reality. 

The performance by Kirby, Ward and Banks showcases the 7 major short films Deren produced from 1943 to 1958.

The piece has three layers: 1) A series of 10-note chords, no two alike.  2) A slow, deep bass line, and 3) A slow melody made of rapidly repeating, filtered plucked sounds.
