Amsterdam’s mayo is a musical multiped, whose path is rather unruly than unlogical. Her DJ sets, as well as her first releases, prove that she’s not easy to pigeonhole. With a focus on downtempo electronics, EBM and techno, she weaves together a wide array of musical styles.
Taking music lessons at a young age, she discovered she couldn't commit to one program. By playing the drums, the guitar, and the saxophone, she worked towards a playfield of her own. Inspired by many musical styles, ranging from punk to reggaeton, mayo eventually moved towards DJing and music production, which would channel her unstoppable energy best. With whatever available to her, she managed to brew her experimental sounds into electronic punk music carrying her uncompromised disposition of character.
After years of programming in the dark, mayo recently offered her debut EP “Sad Violin Music” (United Identities), as well as her first track releases, “SloMos” (Marguerite Records) and “Suc666” (brokntoys). These three releases present her unapologetic approach, her sense for detail and hunch for sound design. Her self-built synths take the lead in her sonic journeys. Following the ghosts in her cables, she creates immersive tracks, driven by sinister drum programming.

Standards & Practices is proud to present 'Imitable Behaviors', the debut EP from label cofounder and frequent collaborator Ken Meier. All four tracks here have been kicking around in various iterations but were finally completed earlier this year. Refining and developing the sound he's cultivated on remixes for Israel Vines and Jake Reif, as well as material under the name Obelus for Karl O’Connor’s Downwards imprint as well as Mysteries of the Deep, this is the first material released on our Double Standards sub-label since 2018's acclaimed 12” from Device Control, 'The Spirit Module'.

'No Confidence' kicks off the proceedings in fine style—it’s a sleek, aerodynamic modern electro cut with plenty of tension and rhythmic drive. 'Fact Pattern' follows, a favorite of ours—sparse and jittery, all nervous energy with razor-sharp drum programming and jagged, mottled sonic textures. The spacious, dubby 'Omnipresence' utilizes a half-time melodic feel to great effect, and the crunchy 'End Matter' closes the EP on a memorably quirky and idiosyncratic note, a stripped-down DJ tool that, like the other tracks here, manages to be both functional and substantial at the same time.

Friend of the label Karl O’Connor aka Regis had this to say about the new release: “This is everything I love about music, but unfortunately it’s all in the wrong order.” We couldn’t agree more, Karl.

L+P-2 is Rivet's second album following his acclaimed debut, On Feather and Wire, released on Editions Mego in 2020. The wheels were already in motion for a subsequent album on the same label, but tragedy struck. Peter "Pita" Rehberg, the legendary owner of Editions Mego, suddenly passed away at only 53 years old, leaving the experimental electronic music community in a state of pitch-black grief. Rivet was among the many deeply affected by this loss. The inspiration and support from Rehberg had propelled Rivet to create at a level he himself was uncertain he had mastered. For Rivet, Rehberg's death felt like the death of music.

However, that brooding sentiment was abruptly shattered when Rivet's beloved dog and companion, Lilo, was diagnosed with incurable cancer just a couple of months later. They were inseparable, and now they would be separated nonetheless. The only way Rivet could cope with this double blow was to compose—for Lilo, for Pita, for his own sanity. L+P-2 is the result.

While the album naturally emerges from a place of despair, it's remarkably comforting. Partly, this stems from Rivet's singular ability to make machines not only sound human but also act human—sincere and warm, yet flawed. In more than one track on L+P-2, you'll encounter a distinctive melody and a gnarly bassline dancing hand in hand with Rivet's eccentric and captivating drum patterns. Then, seemingly on a whim, the melody takes off on its own, leaving the faithful bassline behind—much like a dear friend that suddenly vanishes from your life without warning. Yet life goes on, and so does the music. But never unchanged. Never.

L+P-2 is an album of lamentation, yet also of resolve—a dedication to those who go through life losing more than their share because they always carry too much.

»sleepstep« is the first collaboration between raster-noton and dasha rush. the record‘s subtitle »sonar poems for my sleepless friends« describes its underlying concept – »sleepstep« is a trip through electronically alienated microcompositions and sound collages that, interwoven with text passages, aim at creating a dream-like atmosphere.

the stations of this journey are striving for oblivion of time, an immersion, a drifting in universal states – death, life, birth, grief, desire. the titles often appear to be raw sketches, fugitive, surreal short stories that rather want to break open than execute.

the musical arrangement, in this context, can be described as rather subtle and fragile. though electronically manipulated, no production technique is pushing itself to the fore. and though clichés are not dreaded, »sleepstep«, as a result, stays away from being cliché. the sonar poems for her sleepless friends are feminine, subtle and personal reports. a musical dream journey in the form of a classical concept record – an album that also stands in the tradition of ambient music.


dasha rush is already known as a techno dj and producer. here on »sleepstep«, she celebrates her alter ego. the cd version comes with a 32-pages booklet that also shows her photographic interest and includes the aforementioned poems written by her. furthermore there is 2 x 12" vinyl version.
