All conquering UK rap crew Foreign Beggars, who recently teamed up once more with long time collaborator Alix Perez on their Modus EP, call on another of drum & bass's biggest talents to give the EP's title track a 170 refix. Here at Data Transmission we bring you the exclusive premiere of Calyx & Teebee's Modus remix. Retaining the minimal nature of the hip hop original, the half time intro draws you in: Metropolis spits his fire bars before it twists and switches into a techy, bass driven beast. Orifice Vulgatron handles the breakdown, his rapid fire delivery amping you up for round two with more ice cold percussion edits.

Foreign Beggars x Alix Perez - Modus (Calyx & Teebee Remix)

This track was inspired by my trips to Germany, and Austria, and spending time with guys like Phace and Mefjus. The name represents the swinging bassline, two notes in tandem with each other, having a call and response. I loved the visual image it brings, but the track was only an idea when a good friend convinced me to finish it. Simplistic, but straight to the point.

Dutch musician Baskerville has signed to London's much-loved label MTA. Baskerville is a one-man operation, helmed by Thijs van der Klugt. 

Kicking off with 'Times' it’s dance music made with a distinct touch of class - high quality, layered productions that demonstrate the wealth of experience he has gained from being so deeply involved with music for such a long time. Splicing elements of the underground with melodies, indie, hip-hop, electro and whatever else he is inspired by when he hits the studio. It hasn't taken long for Document One to define their own niche among the Technique Recordings roster. Brimming with multi-genre experience, this team has come well-equipped with a fresh and clean production style, overt musicality and uncompromising levels of funk. This release reasserts their commitment to the dancefloor while showing off yet more colours from their palette.

“Run the Block” takes the tough but smoky sound that Document One has made their own and adds a layer of East Coast hip-hop flavour. The rap-along vocal, that trademark upright and synthetic bass fusion, the popping drums and live-instrument arrangement combine to make this tune a definitive statement of Document One's musical heritage. And of course, that means it has that jazzfunk dancefloor energy in abundance.

Then “Small Steps” flips the script, darkening things up in a way you might not be expecting from these guys. The intro is the sound of approaching menace, as military drums call the dance to order. An eerie dialogue sample ratchets up the tension, before a building kick pattern is deployed as a call-to-arms. Then the drop is all about those twisted tendrils of bass, snaking around techstep drums and ghost-in-the-machine stabs. This is what happens when musicality meets aggression on a hell-bent mission to mash up the rave.

So, as well as keeping a firm grip on their low-down dancefloor funking credentials, this release has proved that Document One have a love and talent for all sides of this music. As their track titles declare, they “Run the Block” in the funk neighbourhood and they're making “Small Steps” into the shadowy technoid realm. Now they've shown they can kill the dance in both, it's clear the Document One operation doesn't believe in boundaries.
