Red Bull Studios London Mix Monday

Sonny Wharton has emerged in the past couple of years as one of the brightest prospects in the UK. Described by The Shapeshifters as “one of the most prolific producers out there” he’s remixed the likes of Fatboy Slim, Frankie Knuckles and The Temper Trap. Releasing singles on Size, Toolroom, Spinnin’ and Skint Sonny has received regular support from house music heavyweights Pete Tong, Steve Angello, Roger Sanchez and Mark Knight whilst continuing to push his own label Whartone Records and dominate the download charts.﻿

As a DJ Sonny shot to fame by winning a DJ Mag mix-tape competition for Renaissance leading to sets in Ibiza at Amnesia, a weekly residency at the infamous Manumission and quickly went on to establish a formidable reputation as a DJ whilst racking up slots for the who’s who of club land with sell-out shows at Space, Pacha and Ministry Of Sound to name but a few.

Known for his technical abilities both in the studio and in the DJ booth Sonny has been able to call us at DT fans of his for a while now. Thus after enjoying a stellar 2013 that saw him continue his indomitable rise through electronic music and with an even bigger plans for the coming year for both him and his label it was only natural that invited Sonny to revisit 5 pivotal moments in his fledgling career. The fact that he also delivered us an exclusive mix to go with it was just a bonus!


Mix of the Day : Sonny Wharton

Twenty years ago, electronic dance music in America was a much different beast than the Las Vegas-friendly industry it is today, divided into underground factions such as house and techno-rave [as they called it]. It was mainly the house and techno coming out of New York, Chicago and Detroit which enthralled and obsessed UK clubbers and record spotters, then in the throes of that amazing period which saw clubs up and down the country regularly packed and cavorting. Every week seemed to bring gargantuan new tunes which pushed out the boundaries and detonated crowds, throwing up new musical mutants as different styles collided and the clubbing communities, anywhere from Glasgow’s Slam and Leeds’ Back To Basics to Full Circle near Slough and Open All Hours at the Ministry, revelled in the ongoing fun and uproar. 

One of our favourite labels to appear in the early 90’s  San Francisco label Hardkiss, which were totally unlike the banging techno and trouser-napalming proto-trance mayhem sprouting at the time. Hardkiss was run by three brothers called Scott, Gavin and Robbie, who weren’t brothers by blood but shared a  spiritual and musical bond releasing a mixture of acid house music, trance music, and breakbeat techno together on their eponymous label.

Sadly the trio was reduced to a duo following the tragic passing away of Scott last March with Gavin and Robbie continuing on without their sorely missed brother. Now to kick off their 2014 we’re pleased to share with you an exclusive mix from Gavin and Robbie in celebration of the release of their new EP RetroactiveFuturisticPsychedelicFunkBump on Whiskey Pickle as the second single from their forthcoming album 1991 which is due to land later this year. Billed as a “ slick slab of electro-boogie rhythms,” the single features vocoded vox and a driving bass line that'll take listeners on an interstellar voyage from Cybotron to Planet Rock.

Exclusive Mix: Gavin & Robbie Hardkiss

In recent years there have been few places the DT team would rather be than in Amsterdam’s Trouw.  Initially intended as a temporary nightspot, the former newspaper factory quickly found a special place in our hearts as it offered one of the finest clubbing experiences in the world launching some of the Netherland’s most promising rising stars and it was with great sadness that we received the news that the club would be entering its final 12 months as of this January. 

One such talent to come out of the Amsterdam institution is resident and Life and Death label manager, Job Jobse who has quickly forged a reputation as one of the one to watch, winning plaudits from some of the scenes biggest names with Tale Of Us and the Innervisions camp already amongst his growing army of fans. Regularly showcasing his diverse musical knowledge, we can certainly see why he’s resident at one of the world's most respected clubs, as well as managing label of the moment, Life and Death, at such an early age.

So with these achievements in mind and  him being about to touch down in London on Saturday March 8th to play for new night We Concur at Crucifix Lane alongside Mano Le Tough, Clockwork and Mind Against, we thought that we’d secure the services of Job to with this exclusive mix for your listening pleasures. The was first seen in 1994 with the release ‘Time 2 Stop’ on legendary UK house label, Hard Times.  The guise was Initially reserved for the deeper, more underground clubs he’d spin at in New York and beyond at the time.

Happy birthday mom! I can't imagine that when you signed your 4-year-old up for violin lessons that you ever saw her becoming a DJ/producer. But I'm guessing you were less concerned with the eventual outcome and more with giving me opportunities to explore my interests and the confidence to pursue my dreams -- whatever they might be and wherever they might take me. 

One thing music taught me early on was that bringing a smile to someone's face is one of life's greatest joys. I can still recall the smiles on Grandma and Grandpa Treml's faces the first time they saw me play the violin, and this memory (and each one like it) fills me with an overwhelming sense of fulfillment. Bringing joy to others is what I strive to do through music, every single day of my life -- and it all started with you, and the unconditional love and support you've always given me. 

So here it is Mom -- a gift of music for the woman who gave me the same gift so many years ago.  I hope these songs put a smile on your face whenever you hear them -- whether you're working out, cleaning the house, or just digging a hole in that rock-hard east Texas dirt so you can plant a cactus :) I love you so much – now and always.

Tuesday night, Burning Man, 2014. 1AM. Starting at 10 and L and ending up somewhere in deep Playa. Being the so called "captain of the bus", driving into the middle of nowhere with an endless tail of flickering lights behind me, was an experience I will never, ever, forget.

Laidback Luke | Yearmix 2014

I fucking love Tuesdays. Said nobody ever. So to brighten up your Tuesday afternoon we have a nice little treat for you in the form of an exclusive mix from the mystery wrapped in an enigma himself: Claptone.

Little is known about the DJ/Producer with his biography describing him thus: "In a now long forgotten world, many generations ago, a bird like shape emerged from wooded dark- ness, floating and fluttering, drifting and dreaming. Backlit by a bright glow of iridescent light, the undecipherable form wore a dazzling golden mask. Its long beak swooped down like an inverted horn and since then, people have referred to the mythical being simply as Claptone."

Whether or not that is a true account remains open to debate (although we'd put nothing past the avian-mask wearing maestro) but what we can confirm is that he has delivered yet another storming mix for us at Data Transmission ahead of touching down in London at Electric Brixton for Tube & Berger’s much anticipated Deeper Sessions on February 21.

Sundown is the first single from the forthcoming album of renowned producer/DJ Chris Lake.  Chris has been keeping himself busy during 2011, touring constantly in north America and around the globe and now the ink is drying on a newly signed worldwide artist contract with Ultra Music.

Sundown has been a secret weapon during his sets during the summer and is an anthem in the making and features all that Chris Lake has become notorious for.  A rolling bassline which knocks, a gorgeous melody built on an acoustic guitar riff, building synths and the ever lovely vocals that are a guaranteed sing along to champion any dance floor.  And that's only the original.  Take all of that and have it remixed by Laidback Luke, Lazy Rich, Kyle Watson, Taurus & Vaggeli and Ronda, you know there's bound to be more than one hit coming from this package.

Pete Tong got him in the studio for a July edition of the Hot Mix; and despite virtually zero promotion of the tracklist, 'Sundown' instantly became the word on the tip of everyone's tongues.  One week later, it was Pete's Essential Contender, and the following week Chris earned his umpteenth Essential New Tune title.   In the US, Chris has two Billboard Dance Airplay #1s under his belt, let's champion this one for a 3rd.
