Sonny Wharton has emerged in the past couple of years as one of the brightest prospects in the UK. Described by The Shapeshifters as “one of the most prolific producers out there” he’s remixed the likes of Fatboy Slim, Frankie Knuckles and The Temper Trap. Releasing singles on Size, Toolroom, Spinnin’ and Skint Sonny has received regular support from house music heavyweights Pete Tong, Steve Angello, Roger Sanchez and Mark Knight whilst continuing to push his own label Whartone Records and dominate the download charts.﻿

As a DJ Sonny shot to fame by winning a DJ Mag mix-tape competition for Renaissance leading to sets in Ibiza at Amnesia, a weekly residency at the infamous Manumission and quickly went on to establish a formidable reputation as a DJ whilst racking up slots for the who’s who of club land with sell-out shows at Space, Pacha and Ministry Of Sound to name but a few.

Known for his technical abilities both in the studio and in the DJ booth Sonny has been able to call us at DT fans of his for a while now. Thus after enjoying a stellar 2013 that saw him continue his indomitable rise through electronic music and with an even bigger plans for the coming year for both him and his label it was only natural that invited Sonny to revisit 5 pivotal moments in his fledgling career. The fact that he also delivered us an exclusive mix to go with it was just a bonus!


Mix of the Day : Sonny Wharton

Twenty years ago, electronic dance music in America was a much different beast than the Las Vegas-friendly industry it is today, divided into underground factions such as house and techno-rave [as they called it]. It was mainly the house and techno coming out of New York, Chicago and Detroit which enthralled and obsessed UK clubbers and record spotters, then in the throes of that amazing period which saw clubs up and down the country regularly packed and cavorting. Every week seemed to bring gargantuan new tunes which pushed out the boundaries and detonated crowds, throwing up new musical mutants as different styles collided and the clubbing communities, anywhere from Glasgow’s Slam and Leeds’ Back To Basics to Full Circle near Slough and Open All Hours at the Ministry, revelled in the ongoing fun and uproar. 

One of our favourite labels to appear in the early 90’s  San Francisco label Hardkiss, which were totally unlike the banging techno and trouser-napalming proto-trance mayhem sprouting at the time. Hardkiss was run by three brothers called Scott, Gavin and Robbie, who weren’t brothers by blood but shared a  spiritual and musical bond releasing a mixture of acid house music, trance music, and breakbeat techno together on their eponymous label.

Sadly the trio was reduced to a duo following the tragic passing away of Scott last March with Gavin and Robbie continuing on without their sorely missed brother. Now to kick off their 2014 we’re pleased to share with you an exclusive mix from Gavin and Robbie in celebration of the release of their new EP RetroactiveFuturisticPsychedelicFunkBump on Whiskey Pickle as the second single from their forthcoming album 1991 which is due to land later this year. Billed as a “ slick slab of electro-boogie rhythms,” the single features vocoded vox and a driving bass line that'll take listeners on an interstellar voyage from Cybotron to Planet Rock.

Classixx - Diplo and Friends BBC Radio (Guest Mix)

In recent years there have been few places the DT team would rather be than in Amsterdam’s Trouw.  Initially intended as a temporary nightspot, the former newspaper factory quickly found a special place in our hearts as it offered one of the finest clubbing experiences in the world launching some of the Netherland’s most promising rising stars and it was with great sadness that we received the news that the club would be entering its final 12 months as of this January. 

One such talent to come out of the Amsterdam institution is resident and Life and Death label manager, Job Jobse who has quickly forged a reputation as one of the one to watch, winning plaudits from some of the scenes biggest names with Tale Of Us and the Innervisions camp already amongst his growing army of fans. Regularly showcasing his diverse musical knowledge, we can certainly see why he’s resident at one of the world's most respected clubs, as well as managing label of the moment, Life and Death, at such an early age.

So with these achievements in mind and  him being about to touch down in London on Saturday March 8th to play for new night We Concur at Crucifix Lane alongside Mano Le Tough, Clockwork and Mind Against, we thought that we’d secure the services of Job to with this exclusive mix for your listening pleasures. The was first seen in 1994 with the release ‘Time 2 Stop’ on legendary UK house label, Hard Times.  The guise was Initially reserved for the deeper, more underground clubs he’d spin at in New York and beyond at the time.

Yes it’s that time of year again, with dance music aficionados from around the globe ready to party it up in Barcelona for Sonar, but what about those of us who can’t make the trip? Well fear not, Camea & Kiki have the answer as they provide this weeks DT podcast!

Mixed ahead of their much anticipated back to back performance for Ellen Allien’s Bpitch Control showcase in the open air setting of La Terrrazza, they’ll take to the decks alongside scene luminaries DJ Qu, Ejeca and Ellen herself for what appears well set to be an evening to remember on the 18th of June.

Exploring a wide range of the best cuts house and techno have to offer, the mix sees the pairing journey through a variety of upbeat numbers numbers that have had us thawing out those boogying muscles as we dance around the office. We can’t imagine a better way to start the week, although we’ll admit their selections have already got us looking at booking last minute flights to Spain…

440 - Kiki & Camea

Felix Cage seems to have a knack for delivering thought-provoking house music. It’s a trait of his that’s been aptly demonstrated on his many outings on his own Electronical Reeds label, and it’s one we thought it was about time we shone a spotlight on as part of our esteemed Mix Of The Day series.

Atmospheric leanings therefore, are very much the order of the day on his mix, an hour long set of selections that’s bursting at the seems with luscious melodies, whimsical kicks and tough-to-pigeonhole sounds. At its very essence, this is a mix designed with sunshine in mind but that’s not to say it’s without its subtleties, offering up a charming, elongated vibe that pushes it toward progressive territory.

Iguana Car Burning Man

First of all, just wanted to acknowledge that Swardy was at his sister’s wedding in Maine, so he was sorely missed at BM this year :( :( :(

That being said, with this set, I tried to put together the most feel-good, melodic techno songs I could find. Some tracks are favorites from many years ago and some I just found in the past months. Burning Man was truly one of the most beautiful and unique experiences of my life (I realize that everyone says that…I don’t care). 

I do want to acknowledge the lack of M Machine music in this set. Honestly, I’ve never once been able to play a set full of pure melodic techno/house stuff. Always wanted to, but never got the chance till that night. Afterwards a few die-hard M Machine fans came up and told me that they loved the set, even if it was not in any way what they had expected to hear. We were there together experiencing something new, and honestly, that was what made my BM experience so great! There was so much art I’d never imagined before, so much music I’d never heard before and seemingly endless interactions with hilariously unique and awesome people. Thanks to Ego Trip for hosting the party and all who came out that night. Can’t wait to do it all again next year...

We love new, we love fresh here at Data Transmission, Zeke Africa is one of the newest members of the Moda Black family, but his music speaks of experience, passion and dedication to his art.

A beautiful juxtaposition of antediluvian rhythms and strikingly modern synthesis, Zeké’s music is always written with purposes. Subtle ambiences ride tribal rhythms, whilst ethereal vocal effects lilt alongside woozy synth lines. Zeké creates unmistakably melancholic moods with ever-evolving arrangements that draw you in and set your mind wandering.

He joins the likes of  Fatboy Slim, DJ Koze, Mano Le Tough, Joy Orbison, Ben UFO, Bicep, Jackmaster, Floating Points, Midland, Mind Against, Leon Vynehall, Gerd Janson and more at Lost Village which takes place over the Spring Bank Holiday (27-29 May) in a forest location in Lincolnshire.

It's always an exciting prospect when hearing  electronic music emerging from places that aren't renowned for it. The US, UK and Germany are no doubt the leaders when it comes to producing house and techno, and they will remain so - with very good reason. But with so much quality music coming out of these places, it's hard to stand out and with artists drawing from, seemingly, the same inspiration. Though Australia are no strangers to the dance music world, they are not famed worldwide for their contributions to the underground house and techno scene. This could maybe be credited to its proximity to the techno capitals -20+ hours to head to Berlin isn't really feasible, even over a long weekend. But what Regis once attributed the inauguration of his sound to was "desperation and isolation". Now Australia is far from reaching desperation or isolation - thanks to the internet, however the old adage goes 'We are the products of our environments' and Brisbane based duo 'From' play testament to this with their maiden voyage on.

Centres Source Records, being the outlet for the release, set the bar high with their initial release. 2 vocal laden cuts by Jawgoh andLVC. But From come out swinging from the off. New York deep house inspired jams, built for warm ups and warm downs. Hefty warm basslines coarse the entirety of the EP, the strongest coming most notably on 'Undertone'. Soft pads, nifty drum work are brought together by a great low end, not dissimilar to that of Trevino. 'The Promise' and 'Zora On' follow suit - clean cut grooves topped with spaced out dub chords and female vocals respectively. 'The Offering's offerings seem a bit lacklustre and a bit soul-less, especially in contrast to the other 3 tracks, however there is promise aplenty for From.

From - Undertone

Next up on the Data Transmission podcast is the fast rising Hungarian, who has been toiling away for many years, at first mostly on his local scene. Emery Warman serves up a clutch of killer tracks that prove why the London based artist is such a hot property in 2016.

Recent years have seen him break through to make bigger waves further afield and has been getting more and more international gigs as a result along with releasing on the likes of ViVa Music, Deeperfect & D-Floor. Only producing for two years, he has already had some huge tracks that have been getting heavy plays by Music On boss, Ibiza big wig and global techno pin up Marco Carola. Emery also runs his own party and event agency under the name of Beloved.
