I wanted to focus on something personal that I had been battling with recently. My name is Englesia - it's an amalgamation of the countries England & Indonesia, which is where my biological parents are from. I was raised in California & China. Now I live in London via a small detour in Detroit. I don't feel I guiltlessly belong to any specific culture. I have always lived in a state of countrylessness, but recently I found a group of people who feel the same as me and for the first time in my life I felt like I belonged.
For this mix, I asked friends of mixed heritage from around the world to answer a set of questions about their lived experiences & how their self-identity is influenced/constructed by these aspects of themselves which they have no control over - yet which is expected to define them. Their voices appear at the beginning and end of this piece. Thank you Sofya, Lyle, Rosey, & Flower Boy, and everyone else who dedicated time to this project.

Diasporic amnesia. I can't remember all the places I'm supposed to be from. Gotta be headstrong, need positivity in my headphones, maybe I won't be alone long. Countless files and easy lives, socialism, insane, running on fumes, an Anglo-Indian-Scottish they - Old, Other, Excluded, Mother. Finding new identities every day, fascinated with the future, convinced to try every way. Stand up next to the mountain, and strike it with the top of my hand. On being both sides of the coin, manufactured beauty, the future will bring a corporation of identities, standing in a line of answers. It was just a lot of hatred pent-up inside of me, even now I'm still unpacking it. I'm still not quite sure where I fit. I'm always wondering... I'm still not quite sure where I fit.
