DATA010: GALAXY FORCE II & THUNDER BLADE

For their tenth release in partnership with SEGA of Japan, DATA DISCS is excited to offer two arcade classics – Galaxy Force II (1988) and Thunder Blade (1987) – together for the first time ever on vinyl. Composed by Koichi Namiki, Katsuhiro Hayashi and Tohru Nakabayashi, both soundtracks adopted an ambitious funk and fusion style, simulating an impressive range of real world instrumentation (think synthesizers, drums, slap bass and cowbells), which for its time and hardware limitations, is nothing short of astonishing. And yes, there’s even a coded slap bass solo.

These two brief, but remarkable soundtracks each accommodate a single side of an LP, but work together seamlessly. Galaxy Force II includes a bonus arranged version of its leading track, Beyond the Galaxy, produced by Hiroshi “Hiro” Kawaguchi (composer of OutRun, Space Harrier) and features a full studio band, complete with brass section and a keyboard solo by Hiro himself. In addition, the Thunder Blade side includes three unused tracks.

The audio for both games was sourced from the original arcade machines and carefully mastered for vinyl. Presented as a 180g LP in 425gsm sleeve, accompanied by an OBI strip and lithographic print featuring original Galaxy Force II artwork sourced from the SEGA archives in Japan.

SYN Premiere: Barbosa - Behelit [PRTL018]

After teaming up with Sawlin to deliver a series of spacy “Texture” works, dubbed ‘Foreign Awake Pt.1 & Pt.2’, Subjected returns to Electric Deluxe this time in searing solo guise. Known for his thundering, no-holds-barred basement style, which until ‘Foreign Awake’ was kept purely to his cloistered Vault Series outlet, with ‘Dolor’ we see the industrial edges polished smooth in this rotund and rolling three-track EP. “Krupp” opens in typical rumbling Vault fashion that builds into a gargled mechanical reprieve and back again. On the B-side, “Dolor” applies Subjected’s rusted signature to a groovy subzero bassline and blue-note melody, the EP’s duly crowned peak-time lead. “Wute” then
concludes with the sort of venomous hypnotism followers of Electric Deluxe should be familiar with by now, albeit this one has a more scuffed and tarnished appeal. Then for the digital fans, “Zopiklona” presents a slightly cleaner, bleepy bonus track with one killer charged drum crescendo.

Andre Kronerts seminal EXU EP gets a comprehensive rework from some of the most outstanding on the scene. Tense and sinister new cuts from Kronert introduce both sides of the release, whilst the label calls upon remixes from Berlin mainstays Efdemin and Ed Davenport, as well as Hollands finest export Juan Sanchez, plus Stockholm LTD label boss Par Grindvik alongside fellow Swede Peder Mannerfelt.

Retaining the slurred vocal of the original, Efdemin layers thundering effects over chasmic bass in his mix of Into The Zone, which saw heavy rotation last year. Meanwhile Davenport brings a wild yet streamlined intensity to C.O.D.E.2.
Side B sees Grindvik team up with Mannerfelt to provide a joint interpretation of Into The Zone, which they manipulate into a peak-time epic, with a soaring melody over hammering toms. Finally, Juan Sanchez channels funk through Roll The Dice with a twitchy, groove-laden rework.

The spirit of EXU is made physical once again via 12 inches and 27 minutes of wax.
