“On The Dial is my take on the Jungle music I grew up listening to on Manchester pirate radio stations in the nineties. The two main pirates that played Jungle are referenced di- rectly in two of the tracks: Buzz FM and Luv NRG. The tracks reference styles I’ve picked up from some of my favourite producers growing up: Danny Breaks, Krust, Die, Sappo, L Double, etc. Rig Doctor is more Old Skool using a sample referencing the guy who would fix up the technicals in running a pirate and styled by early Hardcore Jungle Techno. The whole EP is essentially a love letter to one of the first genres I fell in love with on the for- mat I really learned about it on.” - Chimpo.

Quand j’ai commencé à composer cette pièce je voulais exprimer en sons la sensation d’être à l’intérieur d’un dôme d’énergie. Quelques jours plus tard une Breaking news m’a interpelé sur un sujet étrange : dans l'ile d’Iwo Jima à l’archipel Ogasawara, au sud de Tokyo, des mouvements sismiques d’origine volcanique ont fait remonter à la surface 24 navires coulés lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. 
À ce moment-là j’ai eu la sensation que tous les fantômes enfermés dans ses carcasses se sont libérés faisant le lien entre deux énergies, celle du passé avec celle de l'ère actuelle.
Tous ses idées m’ont donné une seule direction, comment un voyage entre deux rives.

Miraculeusement préservé, ce document a été enregistré le 16 juillet 1991 à l'Espace Van Gogh d'Arles dans le cadre de l'Université d'été de la radio produite par Phonurgia Nova, installée depuis peu dans la cité provençale. Loin du tohu-bohu des Rencontres de la photographie, Yann Paranthoën y fait retour, deux heures durant, sur son oeuvre d’auteur, déjà assez avancée, en faisant entendre des extraits de plusieurs de ses créations qu’il dissèque et commente en répondant aux questions (parfois pointues) de Jack Vidal, lui-même artiste peintre et homme de radio (producteur sur France Musique pour l'INA GRM, puis directeur des programmes de Radio France Vaucluse, dans les années 80). Une relation d'estime et de complicité s'est installée au fil du temps entre les deux hommes. Et Yann Paranthoën revient dans un lieu qu'il connaît déjà : un an plus tôt, il a présenté là, sous une forme que l'on qualifierait aujourd'hui d'installation, son émission "Les Mangeurs de pomme de terre" (elle même inspirée par le célèbre tableau de Vincent Van Gogh).

Participants de l'Université d'été de la radio et auditeurs de France Culture ont saisi l'occasion de rencontrer en vrai le "tailleur de sons" vedette de France Culture, dont les créations constituent  des événements guettés par un cercle grandissant d'inconditionnels, mais dont la parole et les apparitions publiques sont encore rares.
Il est 10h30, l'échange débute après le visionnage du  film de Thierry Compain (Le tailleur de sons). Il se déroule en plein air(dans la lumière d'un jardin créé en imitation d'une peinture de Van Gogh). Au début du document, le son est hélas un peu altéré, mais le problème technique est vite résolu. L'auteur de "Lulu", de "On Nagra", de "Paris-Roubaix" et de tant d'autres chef-d'oeuvres... évoque d'abord l'organisation de sa vie. Une vie partagée entre son travail de chef opérateur du son pour des émissions régulières comme les "Papous dans la tête" de Bertrand Jérôme (France Culture) ou "l'Oreille en coin" de Jean Garretto et Pierre Codou (France Inter), et sa démarche solitaire d'auteur radiophonique (dont les ACR de France Culture constituent le principal débouché, pour des raisons de durée principalement, précise-t-il). Il parle de son statut particulier - et même unique  -à Radio France, de sa relation au temps, le temps du travail et celui de l'oeuvre, de son outil de prise de son (le fameux magnétophone Nagra IV), de son atelier (la cellule 208), lieu d'isolement et de silence, essentiel. Il dit son bonheur d'offrir gratuitement sa production aux auditeurs et justifie ses réticences à l'égard des outils numériques qui commencent à pointer leur nez apportant toute une série de bouleversements dont personne, explique-t-il, n'a véritablement pris la mesure. Il parle de la radio comme d'une expression, du montage comme d'une écriture (et un acte d'amour). Une expression qui se suffit à elle-même et qui n'a nul besoin de la caution de la musique ou de la littérature pour exister. Il revient sur ses années d'apprentissage : l'influence reçue de deux réalisateurs qui furent un peu ses maîtres : José Pivin et René Jentet. Compare son travail à la peinture ou à la sculpture.  Et le son à une matière qu'il faut pouvoir toucher, manipuler, sculpter. Il raconte le tête à tête avec les sons du monde et sa joie d'explorer un art "encore dans l'enfance".
