22-year-old, Berlin-based Benjamin Led (aka BEAN) began making music aged 15 using a cracked copy of Ableton he found on his brother's laptop. With influences spanning from Arca to Rachmaninow, the artist has taken to reshaping classical music techniques into electronic music - with some wildly impressive results. His second release on the LA-based label TAR, his 'PSYCHO' EP smashes together frenzied elements of ambient and trance in a wholly transcendental way - with more than a few hints of Evian Christ, doon kanda, and the aforementioned auteur, Arca. Raised in Los Angeles but based in Brooklyn since 2015, Akua has spent the past five years redefining and cultivating a sound within techno that has assuredly become her own. As one of the many talented DJs that makes up the Discwoman roster, her passion for research and recontextualization in the realm of techno, has been a driving force in packing out dancefloors over 2019 - a year which took her across the globe more than ever. We caught with Akua to discuss the whirlwind and transformative year that was her 2019, being captivated by the wild energy of New York during her first summer in the city, playing mainstage at this year's Sustain-Release, and how she first fondly connected with the fast-paced, adventurous mixing style of early Jeff Mills, Colin Dale and Dave Angel. As our first mix of 2020, Truancy Volume 256 is Akua flowing at her most natural, contorting through a range of influences as she picks out cuts from Chicago and Detroit visionaries. Scan 7, Blake Blaxter, Mike Dearborn, Robert Armani, DJ Rush and Paul Johnson are all well represented here, and her recognised approach of pairing timeless classics with today's most contemporary techno producers is packaged up with her distinct toughness and trademark energy.

After making waves in Seoul with her all-female DJ collective and her multimedia artwork, Arexibo is releasing her debut EP as a producer. 카운터! (Counter!) works upon her proven dancefloor sensibility, weaving in contemplative moments of ambient, minimal electronica alongside bold melodies and luscious synthwave.
Made by connecting and extending virtual synthesizers, this slippage between quiet granular textures, pretty icy minimalism and moments of musical extroversion frenetic rhythmic scenes are at the centre of 카운터! (Counter!). While tracks such as 쌍둥이자리 Gemini are frantic and trance-inspired, fin glides with the symphonic ease of an early Boards of Canada track. On 3, she creates a sense of nightmarish, childlike weirdness, recalling compositions by the 20th-century minimalists. In 𓆉))))   𓆉))), Sci Fi soundscapes meet obscure tuning systems.

“’Counter’ is a word that presupposes a pair,” says Arexibo, “and it also implies a balance of power. When a force of similar size pulls each other in opposite directions, the two are temporarily placed at a standstill. My attitude of producing and creating is no different from this balancing act.”

The release of 카운터! (Counter!) is accompanied by a music video for 𓆉))))   𓆉))), directed by Arexibo, a simple but moving single shot which recalls the early screen tests of Andy Warhol. “Through a high-speed photo shoot that borrowed the typical form of portrait photography, I thought ‘How about the audience stay at the vague boundary between pictures and videos for a while?’” says Arexibo of the video. About Arexibo, 
A mixed-media artist based in Seoul, Arexibo explores the relationship between image and actuality through camera images and sound. She is a quarter of the female DJ crew ‘BAZOOKAPO Seoul’, who organise music events in Seoul. As a musician, Arexibo concentrates on the ‘floor’ as a fluidic space, full of politics. She has been featured in Mixmag Korea and OBEY Korea. 카운터! (Counter!) is her first solo release as a producer.

Known for his icy and atmospheric sounds, @apeak bursted onto the scene in 2018 with 'Creed' - a spectacular debut, followed by 'Desolate' EP, released on Signal Life.

Now part of the Noah Kin (Exploited Body) founded Changeless label, APEAK has released two projects 'Grey Skies' & 'Empyrean' both in 2020. APEAK has a sense for melodies sung by disembodied, synthesised voices meshed with cavernous drums and heady soundscapes that come together to form a distinct and singular palette.

Alongside Exploited Body, APEAK remixed Posh Isolation and Northern Electronics affiliate Varg²™'s "Placing My Iphone X Facing up to See When U Answer My Texts” from his album 'Crush' in 2019.
