In the neon-lit alleys where the shadows creep,
In Area 5, where the code runs deep,
Beneath the hum of SEM’s thrumming beats,
Lies a city of circuitry, where reality retreats.

Detroit techno pulses through the veins,
As dystopian dreams dance in chains,
In the flickering lights of byte-laden screens,
Where echoes of the future meet shattered dreams.
 

Strings of dystopian sci-fi weave,
Through the fabric of what we believe,
In the symphony of cybernetic cries,
Where humanity fades and the machine’s sighs.

John Carpenter’s ghosts haunt the streets,
Vangelis’s echoes in every beat,
In this city of shadows, where no one’s free,
The soundtrack of a world lost in entropy.
 

Earlier this month Bytes announced the reissue of the killer 1990s electro EPs by SEM (aka Damon Baxter, who would go on to record as Deadly Avenger) on May 17, 2024. The second track to be made available for public consumption is Area 5, taken from The Demon EP, the second SEM release, on which Damon expanded the pure old-school electro SEM sound to include elements of Detroit techno and dystopian sci-fi strings, giving off serious John Carpenter/Vangelis’s Blade Runner soundtrack vibes.

Neonicle - Kagome EP [Electro Music Coalition // EMC V017]

Juno's review : "We imagine "Neonicle" - judging by the affixes of the name alone - would likely mean something like "new instance of a half-biological, half-mechanical monstrosity, capable of lamellic self-regeneration when mortally wounded". Think of Terminator, grey goo or The Thing. Whatever idea the producer behind this alias had in mind when coming up with the name, you cannot deny that this nominal vagary still conjures up a certain set of (grisly, technological) images when paired with such solemn, fatal electro sounds. Machinic desecrations and vocal litanies abound on A-siders 'Kagome' featuring Julia Marks and 'Dirty Sanchez', both of which portray a tarred, oiled and feathered sound, as of an unstoppable automaton setting about a new reformative mission. Then 'Train' and 'New Culture' go on to utterly usurp and displace the old narrative, with the hip cyber electro of the latter - modifying the laryngeal emissions of vocalist Dyroplane - extending this robotic coup d'etat to lay down a new, sinister futural law."

The tunnel was long and the shimmering lights from up above were all that prevented them from being plunged into complete and total darkness. Each phase of the journey was intertwined and interlinked with a wave of anxiety for it was not safe for them here. Travelling through the outback of the countryside, beneath the towering mountains and through the wandering tunnels beneath the cliff face they began to wonder whether this trip had been such a good idea at all. All hell was about to break loose...

Kamus & PinballSpider are a duo from Glasgow who are set to self release a new EP which has been widely supported so far by the likes of Eclair Fifi, Assembler Code, Locked Club and Nite Fleit. It's a promising offer from a pair who look set to evolve.

Charging onto the scene is London based DJ/Producer, AK Sports, with the first single off her latest EP ‘Polarize’ on Gallery Recordings. Inspired by a dystopian future, Tank Girl, is a relentless bass track that portrays that through its bass led rhythm, chilling hi-hats and airy female vocal sample. This track is accompanied by a music video that captures a video game like experience. Created by Stacie Ant, the video is inspired by old school apocalyptic films. The Polarize EP is set for release on July 3rd, 2020.
