With 16 years of experience producing and playing music, Leon Switch has been a more than active proponent operating across multiple scenes. As one half of the production duo, Kryptic Minds, Switch and Si Shreeve made deep, dark drum & bass for labels like Penetration, Defcom and Metalheadz which culminated in their 2009 album, Lost All Faith. Gradually making slower, more dubstep influence music the duo, now united in their change of tack, released One Of Us on Loefah’s then freshly minted SWAMP81 label, affording themselves a well received, deeply dark and cinematic full length mission statement which led to further releases on Tectonic, Black Box and Skream’s now defunct Disfigured Dubz over the years that followed as well as the founding of their own label Osiris Music UK. This purposeful switch up (pun v. much intended) served to open their collaborative music up to a whole other audience with altogether with their music appearing in Hollywood blockbusters like Elysium and taking them all over the world. 

Last year saw Leon Switch stride out on his own with a reinvigorated purpose and when he did, his music instantly found a kindred spirit in Distance and his Chestplate label who released his 12”, ‘Deadlock’ b/w ‘Persepolisia.’ A long time staunch supporter of that original, basement dwelling, spacious dubstep sound, Chestplate feels like the perfect house for Switch’s cloying production style. Further cementing that relationship Switch will be appearing at the upcoming Chesplate Room Three takeover on 30th January where he’ll be appearing alongside Distance, Proxima and Cyrus. Ahead of the event he’s kindly outlined the type of thing you can expect from him this year with this 30 minute mixtape.

Leon Switch - FABRICLIVE x Chestplate Mix

The 50-minute mix is a melange of WKND's own bootlegs, remixes and originals, interspersed with tunes that exhibit a sharp ear for emotion as much as groove. It opens with the stutter-stepped tropical vibes of his Two Door Cinema Club bootleg before dropping into classics like Shadow Child's remix of Hot Natured's "Reverse Skydiving,' Snilloc, and Chet Faker. Young Franco is a talented young DJ/producer from Brisbane who plays smooth house, funk and disco guaranteed to take off the edge. The mix he's created for i-D is inspired by a recent trip to the UK and he describes it as including "the kind of music I listen to mainly in my downtime, but also what I love hearing in clubs, bars, coffee shops...pretty much anywhere. It's an eclectic mix of everything I love." With his new single 'Don't You Want Me' out and a national tour about to begin, roll down the windows and press play for 50 minutes of liquid gold.

The Brighton based Braxton is emerging, consistently delivering a fresh strain of darkside percussion and gun finger grooves on the likes of Chase & Status' powerhouse label, MTA Records. His cut-loud-for-the-club sound is like a hybrid of weighted house and techno music smacked bang in the middle of 2016's bass music territory and it's already been saluted by a number of respected luminaries including Pete Tong, MistaJam and Todd 'The God' Edwards. Braxton's also touched the likes of Tourist (with whom he toured last year), Grades and Blonde from whom he's provided sterling remixes.

With just a couple of weeks left until MTA's full club takeover when Braxton will be joining the gang here in EC1, lining up alongside Dimension, Ossie and more, he's kindly fired over an hour long section of exactly the kind of four four constructs he'll be pumping when he gets inside the booth.

The Auckland-based, New Zealand club night ‘Haven’ has been a leading light in the pacific nation’s small underground dance music scene in the past year. From their home of the intimate backroom of basement venue Whammy, founders Keepsakes and Jaded Nineties Raver have introduced the local night fiends to a diverse range of left-of-centre, techno-centric dance music in putting on shows with international artists from lo-fi Australian electro wizard Daze, to the harder-edged sounds of Ansome and UVB.

Now launching as a vinyl-focused record label, Haven is attempting to push the best of New Zealand’s new guard of outsider dance music to the international stage.

Their first release gives us three crunchy originals from their club resident and New Zealand techno-export Keepsakes. ‘Mind Your Manners Munted Millennial’ kicks off the A-side with scratchy percussion, overdriven kicks, and screaming, squelchy synths with a cheeky character distinctive of the young producer’s music. ‘Maximum Mind Control’ then takes us on a different bent with a synth-line sitting somewhere between chilled dub techno and industrial grit that increases in intensity, surprising with a an unexpected end-of-track change. ‘Pick ‘em Till They Bleed’ then begins the B-side with swung and dusty drums reminiscent of the A1 track alongside a loony, gnarled synth-line sure to disorient many a dance-floor. Hard techno genius Ansome rounds off the EP with a rolling, industrial-tinged and crushing interpretation of the B1 to finish Haven’s first foray on the international stage.
